Here is a game changer setting for your Canon R5 - If, you use Double Back Button Auto-focus - try setting your Canon R5 up for triple Back Button Auto-focus - having 3 different autofocus setting to quickly go to is a game changer! Especially for going from static birds to birds in flight.
I'm sure you can do this to other Canon Camera bodies. BUT - I don't have any experience with those other than the 90D, please do your research before changing any setting in your Camera.

This does work on the R6 as well. I've been using this for a couple years. I have the 3rd one set for BIF - with object tracking, f8, 1/3200 shutter, AWB, Auto ISO. If I get surprised I'm all set, works really well. Really nice to see someone putting that out there for others to enjoy! Thanks for sharing!

I am fortunate to have a Canon Experience store 15mins away so they showed me this right from the start. My set up a little different. First is just full sensor eye autofocus and the second is set point autofocus but instead of having aperture or shutter on my top rear dial l have autofocus and aperture on lens control ring. This way l can quickly go from set point to various zone shapes then on my third button register recall l set to full sensor eye autofocus with a high shutter speed so if a bird takes off l don't need to play with shutter speed l just press a button and it will track flying bird with a suitably fast shutter speed. And that is what l love the versatility to set things up to suit different photographers because we all have different likes.

This is the second video of yours I watched. I liked the first one, but held off on subscribing. After this one, I realized you are a great teacher, and not all puffed up and doing self promotion, just sharing your experiences so I subscribed. Don't thank me! I am trying to thank you! BTW I migrated to the R5 from a 90D (like you?) and at first I was lost with this camera. LOL- It has been over a year and I am still playing with settings. But now there is a difference! I am having a lot more fun. There is one more setting I have not decided on, but I will just try it. I am close to getting it right, I think! Thanks!

These modern cameras are great. I use all three buttons, but a little differently. On the left is animal tracking (my most used AF for birds). The middle uses whatever mode I select; point, expanded point, zone, etc. using the right button to toggle through all the AF modes. For the dials, I use main dial for shutter speed, back for ISO (usually auto) control ring for aperture, and mode dial for exposure compensation.

Just when I think I've got my R5 settings mastered, a new trick says "not yet". Thanks for sharing this option. I've been using two back buttons (spot and groups) for years and changed groups to eye-detect when I got my R5. But I've considered adding a third to get groups back and the only way was to move eye-detect to the far-right button. Your solution lets me keep my current settings and just add groups. Thanks so much.

Thanks! I was trying to figure out that camera symbol without opening up my owners manual! I’m gonna go play with it on my R6 Mark II.

Great tip and demonstration, Doug, thanks. Why do you not want to select "register current settings"?
@TheWildlifeGallery388
@TheWildlifeGallery388 Жыл бұрын
I believe IF you select register settings it will remove the settings you have elsewhere and replace them with the setting you selected here. - The setting you select here are just for that 3rd button option.

That makes sense. Yes, you wouldn't want to overwrite the other custom settings. Thanks for the quick reply!

Even though I shoot with the Nikon D500 which is a DSLR, I have my customisation set up very similar and also utilise the function buttons on the front of the camera as well as the ones on the rear. I also use what I call a hybrid mode where I can put the AF back to the shutter button but as soon as I press one of the other buttons that has an AF mode / group assigned to it, that overrides the AF on the shutter button.

Instead of using the Focus Mode button to Register/Recall I set it to eye autofocus, and the other two to spot and zone.

You can't back button focus on moving subjects. The best way to shoot moving subjects is Auto ISO, F-stop wide open, Shutter speed max 3200 (for less noise). AI servo is a must. I use this setting for all photographs even in low light because the shutter and ISO will auto change.

Well you’re entitled to your opinion, but you’re mostly wrong with this reply - I use eye detection which I have set up up on back button (AF-ON) and it works like a charm for fast moving Objects like an Osprey or Kingfisher diving - try shooting fully manual or manual with Auto ISO - works well - Thanks for watching
