Beautiful engineering ! Lightweight yet powerful, this was the F1 engine of it's day. Parsons launched his Turbinia in 1894, setting the stage for another generation of -naval- marine propulsion. Many years ago I saw a model of a similar engine in a Scottish museum, Edinburgh ?

Very interesting Harry. I had no idea that as far back as the late 1800s there were highly precision steam engines like this one. It is wonderful how you label the different parts as the video goe's along. Thank you so much for posting..... Doug....=)

A similar, almost identical machine you can see in this video (link), It is located on the buoy-tender "Bussard", from the year 1906. The ship is a technical museum and still drives today. It's nice to see how the Stephenson reverser works, powered by a small servo steam engine. kzbin.info/www/bejne/roeUhGeHirh8Z6s

Thanks for another great one Harry... making a triple expansion engine reversible is the big problem for a boat... lots of complications!

How did they do it? I assume they used a "simpling valve" that temporarily directed high pressure steam to the other two cylinders even if the high pressure cylinder was at top dead center?

Thank you very much Doug for watching and your very kind comment! Sometimes it's not quite easy to understand the 'how it works' especially, when I see an engine for the first time, but I try my best, studying old steam literature from the 19th century. Greetings to CA, Harry

Thank you very much, John, it's nice to hear such approval! It was, as you wrote, the complex valve gear, I was fascinated of. Greetings to the US!

I bet some folks are sad that someone has sawn open the steam cylinders 😢. Nice clarity and close ups , though.

Bonjour, Sorry, I do not speak german at all, but translators help. What a great engine, what a lesson ! I like steam indeed and had no idea of such "modern" solutions and powerful engines on 1883 ! I appreciate current german manufacturers for my RC models and, thanks to you, I discover another part of my passion. MERCI !

Amazing to think this was coal fired. There can't have been much space to stoke this on such a small ship. I imagine it was a hellish job for some poor soul. Our modern world is so soft. Much is said in history of daring sea commanders yet none of it would have happened without a guy shovelling coal in a submerged metal box.

Si cette superbe machine a été découpée pour montrer l'intérieur aux touristes, alors c'est du vandalisme....les Anglais ne font pas ça il me semble
