How do you cook the shad?

I heard you can deep fry it and can eat the small bones too. Also people eat them steamed. A nurses aide for my mom would chop it like hamburger and then fry it up and swallow the small bones too. That whole family loved eating the shads and all the other junk fish because they know how to cook any fish well.
