Triple Neo Speed - Time Lapse Build

In this video I will show you a time lapse build of the Aeronaut Triple Neo Speed. The fuselage consists of a GRP part combined with a carbon fiber tube. The wings are build as a classic balsa rib construction. The quality of the kit is very good with a fine selection of balsa sheets and a high accuracy of the laser cut parts. As usual for this kind of kits you have some room for own modifications. For example I replaced the original pulltruded carbon tube with a roll wrapped carbon tube to get more torsional strength. The trailing edges of the wings were reinforced with a carbon roving. To have a more carefree handling of the wings during attaching and removing I added 44g glass fiber to the inside of the skin in the area of the inner two rib fields. I strongly recommend to close the brass tube for the torsion rod as shown in the video. This prevents the torsion rod from sliding to one side which in the worst case could pull the rod completely out of the other wing. During flight this would definitely be a catastrophic failure.
All in all I really enjoyed the build and can recommend it for anyone who has some basic experience in balsa building. The good build instructions leave almost no room for mistakes.

Thanks a lot for your kind words. That means a lot to me! I was trying to be on one side entertaining but also able to share my way of building with the community. With every build and every build video I learn more. That is what I really enjoy… well apart from flying of course 😃 I have just started a new build project but the weather is too nice to spend a lot of time with building. So you‘ll have to wait a bit for the next video. In the meantime I will upload a time lapse video of the painting of my foam board Messerschmitt Me-410… probably today! Greetings from Bavaria

I respect massively anyone who still has the patience and skill to build and cover in this world of ultra ready to fly, I did secretly wish it was a pure glider though but with that speed wing I imagine some high speed passes are in order.
@bavarian_rc
@bavarian_rc 2 жыл бұрын
There are the ones who like building and there are the ones who like flying. I like both! So the process of building a plane is something I really enjoy. The Triple Neo would also be a great pure glider but the next slope is more than 20 km away whereas my usual flying area is 2 minutes away from home. So having a motor is the most practical setup. Despite being a light weight build the Triple Neo can get pretty fast. Top speed was around 150 km/h in a dive. But due to the low weight it slows down pretty quickly. So typically I don‘t go too fast but just enjoy the great ability to float from one thermal to the other even over greater distances.

@@bavarian_rc you got me wanting to build a plane for the second time (first time was a disaster, never completed). Im wanting to get a Kaos streamer wing. What glue is best, white wood glue or CA? Any one better than the other or just personal preference?
@bavarian_rc
@bavarian_rc Жыл бұрын
Go for it! The Kaos looks nice. Concerning glue I think there is a lot linked to preferences. For glueing balsa wood I usually use white wood glue. It gives you more time to perfectly align your parts and it doesn't make the wood hard (like CA), which makes the sanding a lot easier. On the other side CA allows super fast progress. As you have seen in this video I also use CA in some cases and some other builds like the Puri, Shaka or Venice were mainly done with CA. Some combinations work better with CA, for example wood on carbon. Wood with metal (like the brass tubes of the Triple Neo) require epoxy. I hope this helps.

Thanks for your comment. Sticky tape is a quite simple and efficient way to make hinges. They are quite long lasting and if need be can be easily replaced. There was nothing magic to the CG checking so I didn‘t put it in the video. Basically I assembled the plane before glueing the battery support plate. By moving it forth and back with the battery strapped to it I figured out where to put it to balance without adding weight. I can focus a bit more on this step in my next build video.

@@bavarian_rc Hello, only one question. Its neccesary to put glass under the balsa cover of the middwing? In classic Triple Speed is no note about it, or its your idea for more solid wings?

It is not necessary but I wanted to make the wing a bit stronger in this area. The instructions don‘t require it. Same for the carbon roving at the trailing edge

Thanks! The eliptical "Spitfire" wing immediately caught me when I saw this plane. Despite being very light it can also go very fast (~160 km/h) in a dive, but you have to be careful not to overload the structure.

Excellent build video, thank you for going to the trouble of publishing it. I have recently purchased a Speed wing kit and the pod and boom fuselage. I'm sure this tutorial will be of much help to me. What is the wall thickness of the CF tube you used for the fuselage? Greetings to all from Harrison, AR, USA.
@bavarian_rc
@bavarian_rc 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your feedback! The wall thickness is only 0.5 mm but due to the fibre orientation in 2 directions it can handle the loads quite well. Even though I have to say that the tail looks a bit shaky. But the old rule seems to apply: things that bend don‘t break. The shop where I purchased the CF tube is specialized on such gliders and they recommend this tube for tail designs like on the Triple Neo. Had no issues so far during all the flights. Enjoy your build!

Yes everyone is looking for ready to fly but forgets that the build can be a very rewarding part of the hobby. My first balsa build was at the age of 14. that was „just“ 37 years ago 😜. Here in Germany I have the feeling that balsa has a bit of a renaissance. But the amount of foam is still huge…

@@bavarian_rc I started with control line flying in a circle, I mostly flew combat, where you chop a ribbon off you opponents tail, at the age of 11 I won 2nd place of mostly adult flyers, if that doesn't get one hooked, but thrill and enthusiasm for the next build to improve and better ones self. As time going from control line to radio and soaring nothing Flys better than a well built and human tuned BALSA airplane, they should be called float planes, love your channel, love watching a expert build, and my goodness, must mention the quality of laser cut balsa parts, perfect.

My father often told me about control line flying. He is 82 now and still has some of his old control line planes that he built when he was a boy. He was the one who taught me most of the building skills and thinking back to the time where we both worked together on planes these are truly some of my most precious memories. Today I am trying to give the same to my kids … with limited success as the girls don‘t really care about RC and my boy is interested in too many other things… but he is just 8… time will tell. Thanks a lot for your kind words and following my channel. I am working on a balsa build at the moment (small flying wing). There will be again a build video… so stay connected. Good bless

Very helpful video thankyou. Is there an optimal ratio of thixotropy powder, microballoons and resin ?
@bavarian_rc
@bavarian_rc Жыл бұрын
Thanks! I usually mix thixotrophy powder and microballoons 50:50. If I want the resin to stay where I put it and not run away then I add thixo and micro until the resin has a consistency where the little spike that you create when pulling out your mixing stick from the resin is staying as it is and not flowing back. You can see it at 03:51
