This is a great example of why we generally use multiple subs on stage staggered at different distances from the audience. I remember years ago, setting up for a show, we did a little test with a 40Hz sine wave. We had one of the roadies walk from the back of the seating area to the front, and raise his arm when it got louder. It looked like he was drawing a sine wave with his arm, with dead spots at regular intervals. My hypothesis is if you change where you measure you'll see different dips in different locations. The different profiles of these subs' enclosures helps you, but the fact that they're in three different places also helps you a lot. In fact, 3 of the same sub would probably yield a fairly flat response too. Great content, once again. I love your videos.
@jamiet744 жыл бұрын
Your room/subs shows the exact reason multi-sub is recommended, your subs almost perfectly complement each other's peaks and nulls. You definitely lucked out there a bit bro!! - I don't think I've ever seen a better example (considering no time alignment was used)

It really depends on the room. Which ever I could hide behind a screen becomes a strong contender. Just for raw output with these the devastator is up there. But the new dual18" , 21" and sealed 24" cabs look interested. Particularly if they fit behind your screen. 2 of the dual 18" cabs with low FS subwoofers (not high tuned PA drivers) would be ABSOLUTELY AWESOME.
@johnedel5953 Жыл бұрын
I was trying to decide between these. 2 devastator or 2 full marty/ kracken or 1 devastator with 1 full marty/kracken. One near field, one front corner and space is not a problem . Any thoughts? Great channel, helps out a lot in my home theater Journey!!!

Okay, real comment time: Running the crossover lower than 80 on your mains isn't really recommended, even for those of us with big speakers. I've got massive mains with big drivers (dual 12s up front, dual 10s surround side and 8" rears) and I still cross at 80. When you cross super low, you're basically throwing an additional sub into the mix and that will throw off your measurements and sound profile. I used to cross at 40 and 50, heck I even would run my mains at full range, but once I learned the magic of crossing at 80 (or even higher), my theater came together so well! All of that said . . .for your sweeps, what level do you calibrate your subs and what level in the AVR do you run your sweeps? I guess I should also ask what level of attenuation you have in REW. Just out of curiosity. I run my sweeps at -20 on the AVR and -10dBFS in REW. I would love to see how those subs measure with proper time alignment, I bet that'd be super flat.
@JilesMcCoy4 жыл бұрын
I will cross over the speakers the mains just at the point where they are able to help overcome some of the room deficiencies. I agree that large speakers in mains in a home theater are mostly worthless. I see no need for anything beyond 8's since all sub duty will be handled by the dedicated sub resource. That being said, I do have towers with 12" PRs supporting the 8" woofers. This is fun if I ever want to do 2 channel without subwoofer support. (I almost always run my subs though.) I typically runs sweeps at a number of different vol points on the avr. REW is pretty much set at defaults. For me this response is flat enough. I like to have a house curve toward 40/50 hz for action movies. Otherwise a curve that is within 5DB is rocking good enough. I time align in order to correct impulse issues due to disparate subwoofer placement.

I'm really liking the videos, but did have one thing that I did actually want to bring up because I think it is important for your use here. You mentioned in this video that due to the capabilities of your surround and main speakers, you plan to cross the subwoofers over at somewhere around 70-75Hz. I just wanted to remind you that when watching movies, the LFE channel doesn't just play the frequencies below those speaker crossover points, but does indeed have its own track information encoded into the soundtrack, and that information actually goes up to 120Hz. So, if you set a low pass filter on the subwoofers below that, you will not be playing any of that LFE specific encoded content at all. This actually gets frequently overlooked by people because they just assume that the subwoofer's only job is to play content for the other channels that falls below their crossover frequency, and don't realize that it also carries it's own dedicated channel content in the surround mix. Hope this is useful to you, and I look forward to watching more content!
@JilesMcCoy4 жыл бұрын
Hey Rob - I don't set any cross over on the subs themselves (or rather set it to the highest possible setting as that I don;t want a crossover in a sub impacting the incoming signal). When I speak of doing cross over work this is at the processor level. So the LFE content is always 120hz and down going to the subs and then I tweak the crossover setting between the subs and the other channels to create the smoothest transition depending on what the room is doing to the sound. So what you end up with is the sum of the 120hz and down LFE content and then the content from the other channels depending on where each channel is crossed over. Sorry this wasn't clear in the video.
@robscorner70124 жыл бұрын
@@JilesMcCoy gotcha... I took it as you were setting a low pass filter on the subwoofers themselves. Just looking out 👍. Out of curiosity, how does that devastator do in the 80Hz+ range. Been thinking about building a few of the scaled 18" variants from the AVS forums, but I'm a bit worried about the output bandwidth limitations that most of the horn designs are known for.
@JilesMcCoy4 жыл бұрын
Rob's Corner Thanks for helping to clarify that for everyone. I’ve not actually ever used the DEVA over 80 hz. My mains all have 8 inch mid bass drivers so they are very competent in that frequency range. The Deva is a beast from 80 hz down though. That I know for sure.
