I finally got around to follow this tutorial and I'm very happy I did. I have some things to share regarding Audyssey: 1. Dynamic EQ does work even if you tell Audyssey not to EQ your subs. And it does a wonderful job at making sure you have solid bass even at low listening levels. It does not mess up the smoothness of your house curve, it just tilts it. I strongly recommend you everyone to try it (and messure it to see for yourselves). 2. Use "Reference" if you want to use Audyssey. That one keeps your house curve intact. "Flat" however does not, even if you tell Audyssey not to EQ your subs! 3. Have a look at the Audyssey tutorials by Sound United, Jeff Clark from Audyssey shares some inside info on how dynamic EQ and the other settings work.

Excellent instructions! I had a pretty nice curve on rew before adjusting phase and peq on my dual svs pb-2000 pros. But after watching your first three videos on setting up the MiniDSP 2x4 HD, you convinced me to pull the trigger and get one. I’m happy to share that my system is now next level! My Subs are so much more musical and they now play +/- 3 db from 16 hz to 140 hz (no house curve) before running Anthem Room Correction. Tomorrow I’ll be watching video 4 to see if I can eek out even more performance. Absolutely amazing! Thank you for the awesome tutorials - Comprehensive and easy to follow!!

When I first EQ'd, I followed this approach with the house curve from 100 - 30 hz which, while good, seemed to produce a bit too much boost toward the crossover region and somewhat "chesty" sounding male vocals. I switched to EQ'ing to FLAT to around 77-78 dB and then applied an Input Low Shelf filter centered at 35 Hz, with 10dB gains and a Q of 0.8. This creates a rise starting at around 63 hz up to +10dB at 20 hz without the bloated sounded male vocals. To me, it sounds way more natural while still retaining the desired boost of the house curve.

Boy I should of watched all the way through the room correction part. The video was super helpful and when it came to the part where I should run Audyssey I figured I knew what I was doing. I ran it then increased the miniDSP input level since Audyssey says subs are too loud. Then I went into my receiver and set sub levels to 0. Turned on my current favorite scene that has some really nice DEEP bass, Will Smith’s Welcome to Earth volcano episode on Disney+. As soon as the bass kicked in my receiver shut off. Turned on my receiver and this time turned down the bass correction like you mention and bass sounded amazing but now I have to increase my volume to get the sound output I had with my old Audyssey file before using REW. I wish I knew why things sound quieter now.

Hey Brad, I have been following your channel to set up my minidsp and UMIK-1 mic with my system to calibrate my three subs with no issues so far but I would like to ask the following questions: 1. Why do I hear two loud ticking noise before the normal sweeping noise comes on from REW on my 3rd sub? The other two subs have no ticking noise. 1st and the 2nd subs are the same brand and model. When I muted the 3rd sub, there is no ticking noise from 1st and 2nd. Once I unmuted the 3rd sub, ticking noise appears on the 3rd sub only before sweeping, same condition when I only sweep the 3rd sub. 2. For subs calibration, why the front left channel stays on? I have no way to turn off the front left channel, on the REW software there are L, R and L&R to chose from as a reference, no selection for none, I guess one of the front channels or both will stay on during sub calibration. 3. Why the SPL is lower when more than one sub on? Example: 1st & 2nd subs on with 80.5db, all subs on with 75db. Is it normal? Please advise.

Awesome tutorial and thank you. Question: Once you've applied REW EQ to output PEQ, can you EQ the result and import that EQ into the input advanced tab side instead of individually correcting each individual freq?

@Leon Halloran absolutely! I actually recently started doing this and it’s such a time saver that I think I’ll do a quick video about it and how to do it. It’s pretty simple but if the video helps out one person, then it’s worth doing. You just have to be careful and watch out for boosting frequencies too much. But if you followed the guide and set your subs a bit higher in the beginning, you won’t have anything to worry about.

Thank you for these videos! They are very clear and well laid out. I also have been following Home Theater Gurus. One thing I'm not understanding is if a high pass filter with the MiniDSP is needed for sealed subs. I have two SVS SB-2000 Pros. Is it more detrimental to add a HPF to a sealed sub? Thanks for your help!
@HomeTheaterGamer
@HomeTheaterGamer 3 жыл бұрын
That was actually a mistake on my part. A HPF isn’t really needed on most subs. There are a few cases where you’d want to use one, such as if you’re using your own DIY subs and need to prevent the driver from playing too low or you simply don’t want bass below a certain point (some people have issues with bass below 15Hz). But for most subs you can just skip adding a HPF.
@degicank22

@@HomeTheaterGamer Ok, thanks for the info! I noticed that Steve from Home Theater Gurus also placed a HPF. I had been reading that people typically place them with ported subs to protect them from bottoming out. I just hadn't seen any info out there for sealed subs. I'll remove the HPF I placed and see if it makes a difference. Looking forward to seeing more of your videos!

I have Dirac live bass control and I’m trying to decide if I should do a mini dsp 2x4, my txrz70 has two independent sub outs. Any thoughts? And if I did go this route how do you tell Dirac not to correct the sub so it doesn’t mess up what the minidsp does?

Thanks for this amazing series. How do you adjust all your subwoofer levels to match the 75db during the initial Audyssey subwoofer setup ? In the earlier episode you level matched all the subwoofers. But Audyssey requires you to increase or lower the subwoofer level to meet 75db before the calibration starts.

These instructions actually made me understand what was expected of me after buying my mididsp DDRC-24. I thought the calibration program was included in the box.... But it seems that I need to use REW to get it to work at all. The DDRC-24 had Dirac Live already inside but I am confused as I do have a button in the DDRC-24 program that states "Calibrate" but it just gives me a logo of the Dirac Live and a diffuse image of the program.... I'm confused and I am not used to that...... There is a Dirac plugin to download too, I noticed, and I''m guessing it's for REW. But why do I have a "Calibration" button in the minidsp program?

I guess my overall concern is that using REW and the mini dip hd allows you to tweak until your heart is content (if that is your thing), but for ARC Gen users…isn’t this what the AVR is suppose to do for you? It just seems like a lot of prep work for an individual to finally run their AVR calibration tool to possibly see their hard work eliminated. Initially my purpose for getting and using REW and mini DSP was to simply synchronize my two subs so that my AVR views them as one large synchronized subwoofer verses 1 left and 1 right sub. Then it will take care of the timeline alignment/phasing with the rest of the system. As a newbie, I guess I am just overwhelmed and need to understand that these additional tools simply allow you to continue to refine, but not mandatory to get a decent sound. Thoughts?

@Del Ali there's no harm in trying, but I mentioned it in the video that applying EQ on top of room correction EQ isn't ideal for a few reasons; mainly less "room" to work with in regards to output and the possibility of other issues including phase cancellation. It's best avoided but since you can't disable subwoofer correction on some room correction software, then you don't really have any other options other than not using room correction at all.

I’m using Power Sound Audio subs (PSA) and at least with them, they are DSPed inside the amp with a filter to not let them play below the tuning frequency. You may want to check with SVS but I suspect they are the same as well. It renders the step where you add a low end sub filter (16-18Hz) unnecessary and potentially detrimental.
@HomeTheaterGamer

Yeah, that was partly an oversight on my part. I have since disabled it. It is a useful feature and I know at least a few people who don’t like “tactile” bass at all, so it’s definitely an easy way to prevent those low notes from playing. I am not one of those types of people though, haha.

So do I need to rerun it anyway or isn't it necessary anymore when I have already done it (I use the app version btw). @HomeTheaterGamer Жыл бұрын
If I recall correctly, if you tell your receiver you have a subwoofer and disconnect it, then try and Audyssey, it won’t detect the subwoofer during the initial level check or first measurement and will stop you from moving forward with the calibration. Also, disabling the subwoofer in the receiver menu and then turning it back on after you do Audyssey for your speakers will disable Audyssey completely and won’t allow you to turn it on again unless you rerun it. This is all applies to Denon/Marantz. Other receivers may be different with their room EQ stuff.

Actually, if the time alignment of the subs and EQ is done properly, the response should be similar at all your listening positions, save for issues pertaining to certain seats that this process can’t correct. Will they be exactly the same as your main listening position? No, but they never will be anyway and you can make minor adjustments to the EQ if you’d like.

@@HomeTheaterGamer I would be interested in a video demonstrating that. While I agree there can be a lot of improvement at all listening positions, I have my doubts about moving off center and not seeing a mess develop. I have a 13.1 setup using Scan-Speak front and centers, with Seas MKIII's covering the rest of the room; four in the ceiling in custom ported cabinets, front wides, and the conventional four rear/back. Ive only ever tuned it by ear, and never ran the in room correction. Past experience with a 7.1 setup, it made things worse. I do however see the value in the sub alignment, however I currently only have one large 15" powered by a Crown CE4000. (I had a second sub wired up for a brief period, but repurposed it.) I plan to remove the 9515 and profile the (actual) TS specs, and possibly lower the tune depending on hown the room response looks. Right now its tuned to knock things off the bookshelf, and lacks 18-25Hz. (Mic, DSP HD, and DATSV3 on the way.) I'll likely use the DSP for something othet than the 13.1 setup. Looks like a great piece of kit.

Setting them at 75dB is entirely up to you. It shouldn't change anything with the frequency response at all. As for the crossovers, I have the fourth/final miniDSP video coming out in about 20 minutes and that covers time aligning your main speakers with your subwoofers (using the miniDSP) for the best and smoothest crossover, as well as checking to make sure your center and surround crossovers are set properly. Unfortunately, I don't know of a way to test Atmos crossovers, so those won't be covered.

You know, this is something I’ve actually wanted to experiment with and I haven’t done so yet. It would also potentially negate the need for the $20 Audyssey app and would be especially handy for those older receivers that don’t offer app functionality.

@@HomeTheaterGamer Hey! Did you try it - unplugging the subs, then Audyssey and plugging them back?
@HomeTheaterGamer

I just gave this a shot (unplugging/disabling the subwoofers then running Audyssey) and... it didn't work. I ran through Audyssey and when you re-enable the subwoofer under manual setup, it disables Audyssey and locks out any adjustments you can make within the Audyssey menu (such as DynamicEQ and Dynamic Volume). Basically and unfortunately, this method was a no-go.

Great video series. You just cost me a bunch of $$, lol. As a direct result of this series I added a 2nd sub to my SVS PB16 ultra and a minidsp 2x4HD. As for running the AEQ software on your receiver with a house curve. Couldn't you run it at the end, then just go into the PEQ in the receiver for the sub channel only and undo any changes manually? Then verify house curve with REW. I know on my Yamaha I can run YPAO and then import the YPAO settings into a manual adjustment custom PEQ for each channel. I then can go in and undo any YPOA adjustments just on the sub channel. Essentially reverse any corrections on the house curve. Do you see any reason why this would not work?
@HomeTheaterGamer
@HomeTheaterGamer 2 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, Audyssey doesn’t allow you to do that on the receiver side. It’s either on or off if you’re just using the receiver. The $20 Audyssey MultiEQ Editor app is required if you want to do that, which is why I spent the money on it. Spending all the time and effort to get the subs time aligned and EQd with a nice house curve only to have Audyssey flatten in our was… well, it was worth the $20 one time purchase to prevent that from happening.
@lag1791

@@HomeTheaterGamer good to know. I believe the minidsp 2x4 HD also has saved presents. I'm planning on doing one eq curve with the house curve you used and then another flat curve with YPAO volume (Similar to dynamic eq) enabled and see what I like better. Keep up the great content man!

Is there any con to putting a house curve in the Input PEQ setting in miniDSP? I set a flat response in the output PEQ, then under Inputs, I set a low_shelf filter to create a house curve.
@HomeTheaterGamer
@HomeTheaterGamer 3 жыл бұрын
@Kris no real cons unless you are importing it instead of adding it manually AND have imported EQ on all the PEQs in the output section. You'd have no way to tweak the EQ after the fact because you lose that ability when importing a curve and/or EQ.

Aren’t you supposed to measure the lfe output in REW? You have it on left so it’s playing the left speaker and the subs together. Aren’t you supposed to get all the subs playing together before you measure the speakers together with the subs?

If you want to use an EQ curve using the miniDSP, then unfortunately that is probably my recommendation. Audyssey will undo all the hard work you put into get a nice EQ curve on your subwoofer using REW+miniDSP and flatten the subwoofer response out. However, if you're someone who likes to use DynamicEQ, then you could bypass doing an EQ curve in the minDSP and just try to EQ it as flat as possible.

Is it actually necessary to run Audyssey again? If i had all the settings properly before calibrating with minidsp( all the channels calibrated etc) and i only changed the crossover for mains to match the subs...but all the other settings on receiver remained the same...? If i just "disable" that rc for subs from Audyssey, then basically all the other settings are still the same....am i wrong?

It's technically not necessary to go through Audyssey again after getting the subs dialed in, especially if you already have the app and can just disable the EQ on the subwoofer.

@@HomeTheaterGamer i do have the app, and remember using it before but for some reason when opened the app, it was just blank...no profiles no nothing..like i've never used it before. Shouldn't that app communicate with receiver and show me if there's already Audyssey profile? Or does it show on the app only, if i've used the Audyssey by the app...? Because now it looks like that i need to run the Audyssey by the app to disable the EQ on the sub...😕

Maybe Im wrong but when you reduce to 20hz the multi frequiency eq range, what you are doing is canceling all the eq that you perform with Audysey. As far as I know (and maybe Im wrong), with that option what you are doing is especifing the range where you want to apply room correction that Audysey has done, if you go to 20hz basically you are telling Audysey to do nothing. comments?

Can anyone confirm or deny if I use the Denon editor app to disable the subwoofers in the editor app can i run minidsp set my distances levels then set a House Curve in Rew. If I then re run audyssey speaker correction setup how would that integrate the subwoofers using the minidsp to do all the subwoofer setup would I have to set manually subwoofer distances distances or how do I set a house curve in minidsp and re run audyssey to recalibrate speakers and have my subwoofer settings intact and integrated witht eh rest of the system as re running a room correction would that not flatten the curve in the minidsp. Can anyone explain how I would be able to set up my minidsp to be able to tune my subwoofers then re run a room speaker correction and be able to keep my minidsp subwoofer setting intact and be able to run room correction without destroying my House Curve in the minidsp when rerunning any speaker calibration. Can anyone explain what is the best way to go about it please as I am totally confused.

I find if you measure the subs with Minidsp no Audyssey nothing in the minidsp settings all flat measure each sub separately align them to be a flat response as possible then run Audyssey let it do its thing then come back to minidsp and measure both subs together that way I find Audyssey will not interfere with the mini dsp settings I find this the most practical way of setting up a minidsp into any system be it Audyssey, Yapo or anything else you might be using. This has been the way I have been going about it and it works I doubt turning off subs in the editor will be a total wasted effort just dont do it. Then all that remains is for you to integrate the mains with the subs for the best crossover job done no stress no fuss.
