I have 1 question for you....you left a lot of meat on this forging but I know you have a 2x72 grinder that can hog material off when you need to but for some of the beginners out there what thickness would you suggest for a blade be forged down yo if they are using a 1x30 or 4x36? Always enjoy the videos and appreciate the time and effort you put into them. 💪🔨 🔥 💧 🗡

​@@cae2487 If you don't feel like forging it down more, the angle grinder with a 1/4" disk is your friend. That's what I'll probably use and show in the next episode. 👍🏻 I was getting tired of hammering and saving material was not my #1 priority since I have enough leaf spring to last me years.

First off, awesome intro video, really well done. As for forging tips you missed, I would say drawing over the horn. Especially with 5160 being so stubborn until you really work it down, the horn combined with the rounding head can save you so much time and shoulder strain. Also, possibly, working across the anvil for a reverse taper while forming the tang / handle portion to save a little time and reduce sweat equity. Just my thoughts, hopefully they are helpful. Regardless, another awesome video, thank you for sharing it!

@@bjornronaldson6017 those are good points. I mentioned the round edge of the anvil for that type of thing. With the price of anvils these days, fewer and fewer beginners are going to start with actual anvils though. Thanks for watching and commenting!

How hammering in the bevels makes the blade start curving back the other way is so counter intuitive, kind of. But 2 seconds of thinking about it while observing the phenomenon in real time really brings the technique into focus. I'm taking a bladesmithing class this weekend here in Oakland. Watching this as a warm. Looking forward to moving into smithing from stock removal :)

My one and only knife I forged so far is from a large machine chain link. Similar shape to your leaf end. My best tip for anyone hitting springs or leaf's. Don't try to move the metal if the piece is not hot. You are wasting energy. Keep it at least bright orange when you are trying to get metal to move. And use a hammer that don't wear you out. I could swing my 2lb a lot more than my 3lb. More accurately. Thus getting better hits. Denis, Love your work and tips. Thanks for putting these videos out.

Great tips Denis! Gotta love forging 5160 huh? It takes a lot of force to move. That's why I got the 3lb rounding hammer from Elijah, of course he uses a 5lb rounding hammer daily... which is wild.

Yeah it sure does take a lot of effort! Particularly when its 3/8"! My rounding hammer is about 2.5lbs, I can't imagine using a 5lb!

I've seen Lin Rhea (who is my absolut favourite bladesmith- he doesn't need belt grinder - literally) use round bar to hammer handle part where the first finger goes. I believe that it works even better than the horn. BTW: did you watch Jason Knight video (BLADESMITHING | Forging Without A Power Hammer | Basics). If you didn't you should watch it- He shows how to use edge of the anvit to maximize power of each stroke. It's very helpfull especialy on thick bars. Great video, as always!

Yeah, it doesn’t move so well, particularly when it’s 3/8”! I have knives posted on the website already. Only one hunter and the chef knives are left though.

Hi Olivier. Titanium isn't hard enough to make a knife. At best you'll get it around 45 hrc.. that's about 15 too low for a knife.
