@@MikesRestorations They are marked made in Italy with the Brevettato mark. Letter/number code, not a serial. I guess that means post 1970 and not for a specific car?

My friend and I are finally restoring af 912 1966 and did buy a set of refurbished Solex carburetors. Apparently the butterflys? Where worn out on the originals. Looking forward to see if you have the same problem and if so how you got around it. Then we will refurbish the originals. - thanks a lot again for doing this series.

Hello Thomas sounds like a great project! Carburetors should be very similar in principal.. I will be replacing the throttle shafts and throttle plates with new replacements. Its a good idea to do this on these old carburetors. The new throttle plates/butterflies should help insure a good vacuum seal. The throttle shafts can easily be distorted or damaged removing the old throttle plates and also removing the shafts from the housing. The reason for this is because they are split open where the plates install and the can be easily altered by removing the parts. If it's slightly bent or distorted the throttle assembly won't seal properly and you will have vacuum balance issues. Good Luck!

Hello Joe Thanks Kroil is also a top rated penetrant.. I really like the working time and solvency of the KB 88 Although there are many super penetrants available on the market now .. this one has been tested tried and true over the years and has never let me down. Its worth a try=)

Hello Baba thank you The carburetors will be going through a re-assembly this spring..At the moment I'm just concentrating on re-hanging the doors and trimming them out. After doors are complete the focus will then be primarily on the engine and gear box. My guess for carburetor assembly will be in April. Im not familiar with ultrasonic carburetor cleaning but I would imagine if used with solvent it would do a nice job. I have had my carburetor body's vapor blasted and that process does and excellent job.

Mike, I'm working on this project for my 914-6 and the carbs look identical. Can you let me know which Klein screwdriver you used? I really want to not mung up the grooves. Also, did your emulsion tubes need coaxing after the application of penetrating fluid to get them out? 2 of mine won't budge and I don't want to scratch them up trying to dig them out. Your videos, KAV911, HomeBuilt by Jeff, and Ian Karr are all required viewing for early 911 and 914 DIYers. There are so many tasks I've done ONLY because I watched one of you do it first. I can't thank you all enough.

Hello William The Klein screw driver is a 605 /10 10inch it does wonders on this Webers On your emission tubes..did you soak in gasoline prior to KB88 removal of parts. This step is essential as gasoline with dissolve old gum and corrosion better than any over the counter cleaners. The KB 88 is just a lubricant after the fact. I would try soaking the carb body in gasoline and try removing the emulsion tubes ...(outside and no smoking=)... while its wet by tapping the bottom of the body with a wooded hammer handle. If they don't pop out try placing a sharp pointed awl down the middle and try turning them to break them free. That should do it. I would recommend replacing the emulsion tubes anyways after the rebuild. Actually if they are that stuck its probably not a bad idea to replace all the brass jetting too When the carburetors are clean and free of all parts I would recommend power flushing all canals and and jet ports with a can of gumout carb cleaner.. same thing with the nozzle jets. Blow all openings until you have a good stream of fluid coming out all areas. Good Luck! let us know how things work out=)

Hello Mike These carburetors do have filtration. The stacks sit inside a housing with single inlet passing thru a filter On the bench though they appear to be open air carbs. Some guys do remove the factory air housing and go with filtered air horns for better performance and looks

Hi Pip First thing I always do is take more pictures than I think will need though the whole process. After cleaning all the parts I then methodically sort them and place them in a Plano plastic organizer container. These are usually found in fishing dept.. Walmart etc. After working with all the parts for awhile everything eventually becomes quite easy to remember.

Absolutely no problem with vapour blasting them, if the operator knows what they're doing, i do carburetors for car's & motorcycles, every month. I am particular about the products i use though. Are the carburetors just aluminum, or magnesium Mike ?

@@restoblast1387 Carbs are aluminum and manifolds are magnesium.. Just sent them out yesterday The shop looks to be a nice one and they seemed quite knowledgeable on the process. Cant wait to see the results!

You should be fine then Mike, slightly different treatment for magnesium, but you have someone who understands that, so you're in good hands. They will look very nice restored. I believe you guys have wd40 commonly in the USA, or use inox, if you get that. Blow the carburetors out with air very well twice when you get them back, you don't usually ever have a problem, but i always do things a few times, just incase.

Is there any benefit to getting them vapor blasted? Or since they have no coating then will oxidize no matter how nice they look?

Hello Rick Im looking into into it and will let you know what we discover. I think its possible and maybe follow up with a conversion coating..the only problem is most metal form an oxide layer within minutes of being exposed to atmosphere wich will prevent any conversion coating form sticking.. Im experimenting and will have some finish results soon!

@@MikesRestorations a little wd40 on the bodies after the vapour blasting will protect them Mike. Just pat the excess down with paper towel and you'll be all good. Vapour blasting has many benefits. By far the best way to clean carburetors. I do it regularly.
