RULES:
The object of the game is to get your opponent’s general in a position where it is left with no option but to be captured in the next move, this is called a checkmate. Layout the board and each player picks a color and places their pieces on the intersecting lines as shown. Take note that the symbols for each color are slightly different.
On each side of the board, against the back edge, is a 3 by 3 area with an “X” shape, that called the palace. In the center of the board, dividing the two opposing sides, is the river. Pieces may cross the river if their movement allows.
Pick a player to go first then turns alternate. On your turn, you must move 1 piece, then your opponent goes. Pieces can capture opponent’s pieces by using their normal moves and landing on a point occupied by an enemy piece. Captured pieces are removed from the game and may no longer be used.
The General may move one point either vertically or horizontally, but not diagonally, and is confined to the nine points within the palace. Also, a general may not move into a column, which is occupied by the enemy general, unless there is at least one piece positioned in between.
The Guard moves one point diagonally and is confined to the palace.
The elephant moves exactly two points in any diagonal direction and may not jump over intervening pieces or cross the river.
The horse moves one point horizontally or vertically to a vacant point, and then one point diagonally. It may not jump another piece.
The Chariot moves as many points as it wishes horizontally or vertically. It cannot jump over pieces in its path.
The Cannon moves as many points as it wishes horizontally or vertically. To capture, however, a cannon must jump over exactly one piece, of any color, along its line of movement.
The Soldier moves one point forward towards the enemy’s side of the board. Once a soldier has crossed the river, it is allowed to move 1 point forward or one point horizontally. A soldier may never move backward.
If your general is in danger of being captured on the next move, that general is in check, and your opponent must say “check”. You must now either move your General out of check, block the check, or capture the piece threatening check. If you are unable to do so without escaping capture on the following turn, then your opponent has checkmated you and they win the game.
If you force your opponent to repeat their move by repeating your move a second time, you must break the cycle with a different move on your next turn. If you check your opponent three times in a row in a way that repeats their positions, then your opponent must forfeit, and you win.

Quick note: The reason that the general can't move into unobstructed alignment with the opposing general is that there's a rule called "flying general" where if it's your turn and the opposing general is in line with yours, you can move straight across the board and capture it. This never happens during actual play for the same reason a king is never captured in chess.

Acutally the last part is wrong. The last part is defined as "Perpetual Check" (长将) by Red. It is defined as repeating the position 3 times which one side continuously puts his opponent in check. If "Perpetual Check" happens, the checking side instantly loses. So in the last example, red will lose the game if he checks white with his Horse one more time after white has moved back his General. So red is forced to make other moves in his next turn.
@HD-fy2wu
@HD-fy2wu 2 жыл бұрын
The reason of this rule is to prevent the losing side from making perpetual checks. Since the General in Chinese Chess is less mobile (can't move diagonally & confined to the palace) compared to the King in Chess, giving perpetual checks is significantly easier compared to Chess, so it is very easy for a losing side to find a perpetual check, therefore allowing perpetual checks and declaring a draw like what's done in Chess makes the game boring and you will see most games drawn by perpetual checks if so. Other than "Perpetual Check", "Perpetual Attack" and "Perpetual Mating-Threat" are also prohibited. Making these prohibited moves instantly loses the game. Also one more point that the video didn't mention: Stalemating your opponent is a win.
@HD-fy2wu
@HD-fy2wu 2 жыл бұрын
Just to add on, repeating a position where both sides are counter-checking their opponents is defined as "Perpetual Check vs Perpetual Check" situation. In this situation, it is a draw since both sides are making prohibited moves. This also apply to any other combinations like "Perpetual Check vs Perpetual Attack" or "Perpetual Check and Attack vs Perpetual Attack and Mating-Threat"

So: Chariot =Rook the strongest piece Solder=Pawn but doesn’t capture pieces diagonally and getting stronger after pass the river and can’t promote to any piece. Horse=Knight but don’t know how to jump Genaral=King but can’t move diagonally or go out the palace, the piece you must protect as all costs. And the funniest thing is you can’t let your General face to face with the enemy’s General. Guard=King but can’t move vertically or horizontally or go out the palace Elephant= Bishop but pretty nerf, can’t even pass the river, move 2 points diagonally Cannon: actually move like a Rook/Chariot but capture pieces by jumping over a piece’s head, doesn’t care about what piece it jump over to capture a piece behind it. Conventional wisdom says that the double cannon check (雙炮將) is almost impossible to escape: unless you're able to either move the general to another column or row, or capture the cannon furthest from the general, this will always result in checkmate, since putting any piece in between the general and the closer cannon won't block the check

I can teach you one of the openings: + If the opponents move the Cannon from h3 or b3 to e3, move your cannon (on the same side) to e8. + The opponents are likely to defend their center soldier with one of their Horses, move your center cannon down to e9. + Then, they are likely to take your center soldier cuz' it's undefended. Move your other Cannon between yours and theirs. + R.I.P their cannon. - This opening is called the "Center-threatening Cannons" or something.

The video did not mention any draw rules, which in xiangqi is much more complicated than in chess. These are the actions which is an automatic draw in chess, but not in xiangqi: 1. Stalemate is a loss for the person being stalemated 2. Three-fold check repetition is a loss for the person doing it (I have mentioned it) 3. Three-fold ATTACK repetition is also a loss for the person doing it. Similar to the 2nd rule, the three-fold must be consecutive. Note that rule 2 and 3 have MANY exceptions. I will mention it in the next part. 4. 50-move rule in xiangqi is if after 50 moves (each person has finished 50 turns), no piece is captured. It is not an automatic draw if the 50-move rule is reached, unless one person claims a draw. These are ways to draw a xiangqi match: - Both sides agree to a draw (easiest) - Draw due to some exceptions of rule 2 and 3 (these situations are extremely rare): + One side does three-fold check repetition is a loss. But both side do this consecutively, one after the other is an automatic draw + A chariot (rook) do three-fold attack repetition to a canon is a loss. But if that canon is protected (by other pieces), it is an automatic draw + A canon do three-fold attack repetition to a chariot is a loss. But a canon do three-fold attack repetition to 2 chariots consecutively is a draw + Within 2 moves, a piece from side A attacks a piece from side B twice, all in a while B attacks A only once. Do this 3 times (6 moves in total) and A loses

now, for the epic battle everyone waits for: western chess vs chinese chess: they both respectively have a VERY broken chess piece (pawn, cannon, queen, chariot and rook) they both have different rules and placements, so you might want to get a special board that fits the pieces, but works too. and then, you can have the epic battle. probably western chess will be winning, because they have much more broken pieces than the cannon, like the queen and rook. soldier can outmatch the pawn, while cannon outmaches rook. the western horse outmaches chinese horse, and a lot more differences that make the battle interesting. but mostly its just depending on how big brain you are

Mostly because this isn't even chess. It's just a game that the Chinese played and for which westerners didn't have a word. Often, when that happens and a new "translation" has to be invented, the new thing just gets called "[country name] + [whatever the translator is reminded of by that thing]". Think of the Chinese "dragons" or the Chinese "zodiac", for example.

@@xeno2752 Except this game originated from the same Indian "original chess" as "western chess", it still belongs to the same "family". What I am referring to is that Persia, Arabic World and Europe didn't alter game that much, making basically "variants" while in China and Japan it evolved into basically separate games with similarities.

The minister (elephant) is originally from Xiangqi as you can see it was designed for a 9x10 board. The counselor or scholar was designed for the 3x3 palace so they could guard each other. When these pieces were moved to the squares, one counselor was removed but the move stayed the same which was a rather useless piece that only moves diagonal one square. The original movements of the minister and scholar obviously came from the 9x10 intersection board and they didn't fit the 8x8 square board so the pieces minister became a modern day bishop and the scholar became a modern day queen.

There's a thing called stalemate, like chess, the general is not in check but no legal moves, but in this case, whoever performs it wins like checkmate. For the checking 3 times, idk but sometimes if u check too many times u lose. For general, the exception to move more than one step and out of the palace is the situation where two generals are on the same line without other pieces, where one general can take the other one in, which this rarely can happen as if u move ur general into danger is already illegal.

There are parts you did not mention : 1. The Pawn doesn't capture diagonally, sideway capture allowed after crossing the river, once it reaches the end of the board, it doesn't Promote 2. A bonus, if both knights confront each other, if a piece blocks one of the knight's movement, that knight cannot capture that knight but allowed vice versa, unlike western chess' knights.
