I haven't drummed in like, almost 4 years now. I was able to get to 160 and I was pretty proud of that, especially since I was a mallet player during marching band.

@@nayelicarvajal8342 You don't need all 40 rudiments. You can skip the X stroke rolls beyond 6. You still need to be able to play rolls of any length, but beyond 5 you are just counting rather than practicing different rudiments. You can skip all the combinations of paradiddles + drags + flams. Just practice paradiddles, flams, and drags. There are an infinite number of combinations of these things beyond what's in the official 40 rudiments. Skip the ratamacues. Basically I'd concentrate on the following: single stroke roll (various lengths) double stroke roll (various lengths) paradiddles + paradiddle-diddles flam taps + maybe flam inverts accent taps (flam accents without the flams) flam accents + any other combination of moving flams, accents, and drags around. swiss triplets Also I think the key to playing some of these "rudiments" well is breaking down each hand individually. For example, play just the right hand of a flam accent or a flam drag and then just the left hand, and see if it sounds consistent on each hand. Chances are when starting out, one hand is going to be weaker, and focusing on your weak hand is going to give you better results. If you get proficient playing those things in different combinations, you will be able to play everything else. You don't actually ever need to know what a pataflafla is or to even know it was one of the 40 rudiments to be able to play it. In fact I just had to look it up right now. It is still important to be able to play it. It's just not more important than the myriad of other things similar to it that don't have names. In drumline we actually had an exercise that started with 6 variations of these, which is the reason I can play them and other things like them.

here's a fun take on this: change the alternate sticking to RLL or LRR. so now instead of a roll, you get a 2-4 rhythm RRLLLL or LLRRRR I've seen this rhythm pop up pretty often in WGI music

I'm new to snare and teaching myself, how do you roll just one note like that? Do you just let the stick rebound on that note? Also dude what the hell is a diddle lol. I know what a paradiddle is but everyone's talking about chops and diddles and all this crap.
@matthewaquino6078
@matthewaquino6078 2 жыл бұрын
a "diddle" is just another way of saying a "double stroke." you just let the stick rebound for a second hit. so a "paradiddle" is pretty much a mnemonic of saying the strokes. pa-ra-diddle = RLRR or LRLL chops just refers your current skill level, and how easily you can play certain rhythms or rudiments. for example, I max out at about at 180 bpm mark for this exercise, so I don't quite have the "chops" to play this any faster at the moment.

I’m new and would like to know what the lines through the stems represent. Do I play a double or what do I do? Thanks
@koifish528
@koifish528 3 жыл бұрын
You’re correct, a slash through the note stem means you play two notes in the space of the slashed note. Slashed notes are played using doubles. A slashed 8th note means you play two 16ths, a slashed quarter note would mean two 8ths, and so on

@joeysaylor6410
@joeysaylor6410 4 жыл бұрын
Diddles are just hitting twice in one stroke. You push the stick down and use a controlled bounce to make it hit twice instead of once. If you’re playing at a slow tempo, it might be easier to use your wrist to just push them out, but if you’re playing a little faster, you’re going to want to let the bounce do a lot of the work. They take some practice, but they aren’t as hard as they may seem.

Drum Lifestyle I dont want to sound like I know more than anyone else. I simply learned from my instructor and more specifically from scojo himself of the difference in play styles of diddles that existed far back and, for some, still exists today. West coast diddles are replacing a note but are not played on the same partial, instead they evenly replace one note. East coast diddles, now the only diddles that are really played by drum corps, marching bands, etc... Are when the diddle is placed right on a note instead of evenly replacing the spacing of the note.

They were meant to be, but a true musician can bend the meaning of exercises and use them to improve almost anything. Ignore the other commenter and use the exercise for what YOU need it for. You can double stroke to practice diddles. You can single stroke to practice faster single speeds. You can add in crescendos and decrescendos every four bars to practice dynamics. The possibilities are endless and it’s up to you to decide how you want to practice. Please ask any questions you have and do not be discouraged by the low percentage of people who have a problem with people being unsure. Feel free to ask any questions you have about drumming.
