In this video I talk through all of the tripods I have purchased through the years, which ones have served me well, and not so much. At 10:18 I give my recommendations for which tripod to buy given each specific use case, including BUDGET tripods. I realize not everyone can afford a $1000 tripod for their hobby.

Nick, it's an honor to be on your list, thanks for doing this round-up. Just wanted to clarify some things mentioned in your video and here in the comments: The Series II tripods are available in Europe and the UK; the European distributors decided to offer slightly different models over there, mostly 5-section versions of what we have here in N.A.. Series II tripods in North America now include 6 different models, with a seventh on the way, to suit every photographic application and situation. FLM is a German company, the ball heads are made in Stuttgart by MK Messtechnik, and they recently handed over Series II tripod production to FLM China, who made the tripod you're using. We're a small company, with one distributor for the US and Canada (me), so our production levels aren't the same as other companies, but getting anyone a tripod has never been an issue. Keep up the fantastic work! Ari - FLM USA & Canada

I’m considering FLM, but their feature set is sorely lacking. No bag included? I realize it’s about the quality of the legs, but it’s nice to get a bag along with a few of the accessory feet, etc. Just my observation in passing.... Peace

I'm now well over a year into my ownership of my CP38L4II, and I love it even more than when I first bought it. Recently I went to Iceland with BVS and Greg, and it got a hammering due to the incredible Icelandic winter weather, and it didn't miss a beat. The black abrasive sand gave me a few crunchy moments, but once cleaned, like any other tripod needs, it was back to perfect again. Due to my clumsiness, I broke a shim in one of the lower joints, so reached out to FLM USA and Canada, and they were magnificient in sorting me out with spares and advice... TOP notch service from them especially Ari .. what an incredibly helpful guy!!! When you pay for something like this, think of the backup you get as well as the product.. and I am extremely happy with both ..... bear in mind I live in the UK yet FLM went out of their way to help despite being across the pond.... magnificent service guys ... 👍

Great video Nick. Like you said, everybody has their own specific needs. For me, I recently upgraded my tripod and I went with a Benro TMA-38C. Like you I hate center columns and I liked that this ships with a "short column" that is basically just long enough for the tripod to grip with nothing sticking out below. For me, it offered an excellent "bang for the buck".

Great comparison Nick! I really like that you set out your basic criteria and personal preferences up front. The center column decision is a big deal and especially important for folks that use a fluid head. This is helpful as I've been trying to pick a new set of legs that reaches to about 6' but still folds up reasonably small for longer hikes and until now everything I've tried or looked at has had a center column. FLM might just be the answer.

That being said, we seem to continue our search. “Some day my dream will come!” After a workshop with you, I got the RRS tripod. Great tripod. Encouraged me to rely on high ISO and in-camera stabilization unless doing focus stacking or exposure blending. There’s humor in there somewhere.

My main tripod is a Manfrotto CX055PRO4 with a Benro BH20(or 30), I also have a MeFoto Roadtrip Aluminum and one I just DIY is an old PrimaPhoto that I use around home for ground level(photographing chipmunks and squirrels). Interesting vid Nick. Being in UK companies like Benro and 3 Legged thing seem to make the best bang for the buck (sorry £!). Having said that because I hate centre column's too I've gone for an ifootage TC7 fastbowl for hiking (saw it on Thomas Heaton's channel) and a Rollei Rock Solid Alpha with no centre column for more heavy duty. As an enthusiast I could not justify $1000 equivalent tripods. I agree too with you about the Manfrotto quick release plate. Had a Befree travel tripod and technically the release plate works fine but only really 1 L Bracket available from Manfrotto and it's too big. However....... give me flippy locks over twist locks like I have on the ifootage. Never any doubt if the leg is locked out when you are rushing. I've seen legs slip when not tightened properly or people being OCD checking the twist locks. Got twists on my Rollei so it's not a red line. I also have the same 'condition' as you wrt tripods and camera bags but as it's not a business expense for me I've been fighting the urges!! Always enjoy your content. Stay safe.

HI Nick. Excellent tripod comparison sir! As a landscape and product photographer who shoots 100% tripod-mounted for optimum image sharpness and detail, I can also heartily recommend Gitzo and FLM from personal experience. And though the following tripod may be a bit too small (for you) from a maximum height perspective, I found a Chinese brand called Leofoto, that makes an Amazing travel tripod, AND it includes a fantastic ball head with one feature that I've not found INCLUDED on any other ball head...namely, a panoramic head! This allows the single ball head to function as a pano head, plus, if you swing it into the notch, turns the pano head into a "poor man's " gimbal head! (Max payload = 22 lbs.) Also, another feature of this tripod/head combo, is that the knobs/controls on the ball head each have a different shape and texture (ALL metal, CNC aluminum)! Simply ingenious design, because it eliminates the possibility of inadvertently loosening the wrong knob!! Why ALL ball head manufacturers don't do this is beyond me...actually, probably because of design and manufacture costs! In any case, this Leofoto LN-254CT Tripod is awesome...10X carbon fiber legs, included quality metal spikes (with rubber gaskets), included handy carabiner allen tool, and a very nice carrying case. Well worth $380, IMHO. And regarding Squarespace, though I would love to move over to them and use your discount code, I found that they cannot import the thousands of jpeg images I already have up on my Network Solutions site, so I cannot use them, because obviously it would be quite time-prohibitive to upload my many images one at a time! Thanks, Nick, and Be Safe!

Interesting comment about getting FLM tripods in the UK.. I bought the CP38 L4II direct from the US via the B&H website... the price was actually really good, they handled all the import taxes.. and best of all it came within 7 days of me placing the order!!.. Brilliant Service by B&H and the Courier.. As for the tripod itself, I am over the moon with it, the quality is fantastic, so easy to use and when paired with the RRS Ballhead I also bought from B&H is THE perfect setup... it's not so heavy that out can't take it out hiking but the stability is second to none.. Great recommendation :-)
@elho001
@elho001 3 жыл бұрын
I have been using the FEISOL Tournament CT-3442 Rapid for over 7.5 years now. I agree that I would not necessarily recommend it, but for a different reason. The height and - lets call it - robustness to weight and price ratio is really good and definitely above average. It has been to some harsh use in that time - caves, mines, bunkers and abandoned industrial facilities exposing it to - or rather covering it in - anything from the most sticky loamy mud to most fine dust and soot. I did have a rubber on one of the twist locks come loose once in that time, but a bit of superglue fixed that. The dimples on the anti rotation plastic bits inside the legs do wear off over time. With that kind of use, I would argue that it holds up very well. The reason not to recommend it in general however, is the actual stability, which is below average as it turns out. That is why I called it robust above - it will carry quite some weight without collapsing and the legs will not flex as easily as most others in the same weight range, but manipulating the camera buttons or lens zoom or notable wind will make it shake. In direct comparison there is not much difference to a Peak Design Travel Tripod Carbon in this regard, which is a lot more compact. Ultra-wide angle lens on low pixel pitch (20 MP full-frame in my case) body? FIne. Long telephoto lens on same? Annoying to compose and manually focus with magnified view, though manageable unless wind is all too strong. But there likely are better options out there at a similar price. High pixel pitch (61 MP full frame in my case) body? With absolutely zero wind and 10s timer (ie. the kind of conditions where about anything works) still okay, but anything else definitely does call for something adequate, ie. above average in stability.

Heya thanks for the video! I know this is super old and you likely won't see this now. But I find it intriguing that you don't like center columns or flip lock style legs. We are complete opposite in this regard. The last thing I want to do is try and make fine adjustments to height buy loosening legs and trying to adjust them to a heights in-between segment lengths (if that makes sense). And if I'm locking legs into place, I want it to lock into place. Not have a twist action that may or may not be tightened enough. It's slower and more fiddly. I always wondered where the people are that like these locks, and why tripod companies continue to make them that way. But here you are! Haha. I'd love to know why you have these biases. Perhaps there's something I've been missing. I realise everyone is different, and have different preferences. I'd just love to hear more about the logic behind your conclusions. Cheers!

100% ! That would be a fun thing to watch. Mid level cameras and gear. When starting out I can't tell you how many times I would read posts when someone would say it's not the gear it's the photographer 😁. A Grand for a tripod??? C'mon now. I get it. If you are rocking a Full Frame Nikon with a 600mm zoom yeah you'd well benefit from a hulk of a tripod. But is the average photog, even a youtuber gonna really need that? Doubtful, I roll with a medium to large size budget carbon fiber tripod and budget ball head and honestly it's fine for the landscape & astro stuff I play around with. I always have to use a tripod as I can not hand shoot due to a disability. Even then was I dropping a grand + on a tripod? Nope.

@@stephen5426 You make a good point as far as the tripod having less impact on getting quality photos. But I think with tripods, it's more about having a tripod you can rely on in any condition and that will last 10 years versus buying a new $100 tripod every year. It all depends on how much you shoot and what kind of places you shoot.

I've finally convinced myself that it's time to replace my Bogen 3021/3047 tripod/head, so I've been reading and watching reviews all over the place. I've just about decided on the FLM (either your recommended CP38-L4 II, or the new Atlas 42-L4). The one thing that I am doubtful about is the design of the leg angle locks. The Bogen has a much simpler system, where you only need to use your thumb to pull down on the lock to spread the leg out (it ratchets down as well). This lock has never gummed up or failed in any way. It has been so reliable and simple that I barely take notice of it. I'm a little surprised that Gitzo/Manfrotto abandoned it, and nobody else seems to have copied it. I'll probably end up getting one of the FLM models I mentioned, but the leg angle lock is my final bit of skepticism.

Hi Nick Great information, BUT I will disagree about what you said about FLM in Canada support, Ari is the customer support person their N American distributor and I have had many contacts with him as I own many of the FLM tripods he has been nothing but AWESOME! I have got backup parts like shims and other parts that I wanted to have in my photo parts kit to have if and when I needed them as I work them very hard. I have had RRS and a good company but too many people at RRS and the fact that when RRS moved from CA to UT that hurt many employees that their life was with RRS so many years and it was a oh we are moving come with us or don't. I find that FLM is a great quality and value over RRS and have enjoyed FLM support over the many years over RRS mainly because you are working with Ari over email or talking with 1 person and much more efficient and accurate. With RRS for an influencer like yourself it was easy but for us no influencers Ari has proved himself. I feel that you get a $1K to $1.5K tripod like the ProMedia Gear & RRS quality for 30%-50% less or more with the FLM tripods. I can't say enough FLM as a long time owner of their tripods. Just my 2 cents. Also I got that FLM CP30-SII last year and it's the same quality as the FLM you have and I will bet money that it's much more stable then the Feisol's are. Christopher

Sometimes its hard for someone like me to gauge because you never know if a company is just putting their best foot forward because I am a visible person.. or if thats how it is for everyone. Totally agree with what you said about the FLM quality and value, particularly with their newest stuff!

Hey Nick, thanks for the reviews. I'm pretty happy with my (4) tripods! But I'm struggling to know what head to buy. I want a pano head with clicking angles. I'm currently using a ball head and have just realized I need something else. Could you do one on heads? Love listening to you ⛈

The thing is, it's not the real, iconic Rollei that's known historically. Some German importer bought the rights to the Rollei brand name in 2015 and they've been selling re-branded Chinese and other products. Their tripods (and ballheads) are actually re-branded FotoPro tripods (pretty good quality tbh), sold for nearly twice the price. It doesn't really matter where a company is from, as long as the products are good quality, service is good and the prices are right.

Nice video Nick. I'm quickly becoming a tripod addict myself and family/friends think I'm crazy haha. I've been using mostly benro and my benro mach3 XL has been holding up really well in the desert and seascapes, etc. Obviously of lesser quality though and made in china. Definitely looking at a big RRS or FLM as my next and hopefully final purchase. Made in the USA! Makes me really want to pay the premium for RRS. Question though, I've been searching for those extra long skinny spikes you have on your big RRS. Haven't been able to find the ones that long and of that style.

Nick, I don't see the metal twist locks as an upgrade for two reasons. 1 using them in the winter when it is really cold... you don't get the grip with gloves on. And 2 you take your gloves off because you dont have the grip, and your hand will freeze, especially if your hand is damp. I have lost skin... additionally, metal will suck the heat out of your hands. I have the smaller FLM, as I am a tripod junky myself and while it is well built the metal twist locks are not a plus for me. My favorite tripod is my RRS 24L. I also don't like the center column but what I do like is the height without spreading out as much. I need that for Architectural photography. So, I deal with having a center column. I also love the leveling base on that one. The new RRS travel tripod solves this with a NOT ROUND clip off center column that fits between the legs all fit together making for a much more compact package that can take the camera to 3 inches off the ground if desired. Additionally, you are suggesting the FLM Mark 2, is your RRS tripod the Mark 2? Just to make things fair... comparing mark 2 to Mark 2 is probably key. The new travel tripod from RRS is actually their Mark 3. Totally different integrated ball head, leveling base, center column, and apex, with the Mark 2 legs.

Rubber twist locks are nice, if they work well, I have had very bad luck with mine however.. shooting seascapes leads to wet tripod legs, which leads to really cranking down on the twist locks, which leads to the rubber coming loose. I agree they get freezing cold I talked about that in the Promedia gear review, but I would take that over them not working right. my RRS 24 is a mark II and my 34L is mark I. I understand what your saying about comparing and older model with a newer model, but I really dont see that many changes to change how the FLM stacks up to it I guess. I cant justify a 1100 purchase just for making that comparison.

You have a tripod / backpack issue? +1 for the FLM tripods. I purchased the CP34-L4-II and the CP30-L4-II for the same reasons you mentioned. There is a shorter CPL30-S4-II which is the same as the CP30-L4-II but tops out at 53 inches and weighs just under 3Lbs. The customer service is great for a small company, and I worked with Ari who is absolutely fabulous. I traded in an Induro 404L because the weight and size were simply over-kill for my needs, but could be for someone with big lenses on a gimbal or video head. Now if only Shimoda could get the X50 in stock...

I think I have a bit of tripod GAS myself, with 3 tripods, a GorillaPod, and a monopod so far. I'm switching away from Manfrotto heads to Arca (I got a RRS). And now I want a tripod without a center column. I've been looking at FLMs but didn't know much about them. Glad to hear your recommendation! BTW your Photoshop courses are great and I'm recommending them to everyone. Which gets me some strange looks from supermarket cashiers, but hey.

Hey Nick, as good as the RRS tripods are, here in Europe it is a pain to get customer service. I had a BH-40 and for a repair I had to send it to the USA with all the trouble at the customs, to avoid paying taxes a second time. So for me, RRS is out of the race, as long as they do not have a service point here in Europe. The FLM line looks really interesting but I promised my wife that the Gitzo is the last tripod for the next 5 years.

I've been gradually moving away from liking the center column tripods. My 10+-year-old Sirui carbon fiber tripod has a removable center column, but it's not exactly a flat base like video tripods have. Still, if I want a bowl leveling base, you can buy screw-on ones for any tripod, which is an inexpensive fix. There are tripod adapters for most needs now. I'm really starting to dig the Fotopro professional tripods, which have been around China for awhile, but very recently introduced to the US market. Not cheap. I never would have considered them before now, but the E6L may be my next purchase. Fortunately, I only have 2 tripods right now...for wildly different purposes. This next one will be for storm photography/wildlife/sports....things where stability is really key, and weight/portability isn't as much a concern. I have no intention of ever collecting tripods. lol

What is your take on the leg locks, ignoring your preference for metal one for a second, when it comes to operation and dirt resistance, ie. specifically: Really Right stuff does advertise the sealing for their mark 2 incarnation. Given e.g. your shooting at the sea, did you notice any notable improvement, finding less stuff in there when cleaning or even longer time on location before you start to feel dirt in there in operation? Gitzo does advertises their current G-Lock locks to become tighter as there is more load on them and how a quarter turn is all it takes to lock securely. I guess everyone knows that situation where you spent time to setup and fine-adjust the tripod height and position to where you want it and then in the midst of adjusting the head for the desired composition you happen to put some more pressure on the tripod than before and one of the legs slips in a bit, because you had been a bit too sloppy in tightening it. So on paper, a lock that due to a conic shape would just wedge itself in place in that situation instead of slipping looks like a very welcome improvement in usability. To my surprise however, I have not yet come across anyone commenting on that one way or another on this aspect. So what would your take be on these - work as advertised and are a noteworthy detail improvement (like the ProMediaGear leg hinges) or plain marketing BS that is no different at all to other twist-locks?

I don't think anyone understands Gitzo's numbering system! Seems like they enjoy adding random numbers and letters into the tripod designations. At least one number refers to the diameter of the top tube though. Great video. I'd love to see a review of tripod heads. There seems to be no standardization to the ratings various companies use. It seems that RRS and Gitzo under rate the loads the heads can carry. Other companies tend to over rate their heads. One thing about RRS is their great customer service. I visited them once in San Luis Obispo (i think, definitely So Cal) and purchased some product. After a bit of talking with the guy in front, I realized that he was the owner of the company! Really nice guy. I love spending money with companies that make their products locally and provide good customer service. RRS products are expensive but I feel good giving them my hard earned dollars!

What you dont have that you need is the new RRS travel tripod. Has version 2 legs with the vents and wiping gaskets, and a totally different center column that comes right off so you can set the tripod up on the ground at ground level in like 3 seconds and will give you the height you need on a travel tripod (I am 6 foot 2 inches), and it has a ballhead that is basically upside down, a pano setting for the ball head and basically a leveling base... And the whole thing, head and all weighs 3 pounds. Zero ounces. Oh, and the ratcheting leg locks are powered by magnets now rather than springs.

Benro is the brand of budget and quality, at least in Europe. I personally use Sirui tripod for almost 6 years and there is no sign that i will replace it in near future. (Sirui gives 7 years warranty !). It has monopod option, removable center pole, weight hook, whist locks, nice leg locking mechanism, over all perfect option for my needs. It hold well DSLR with 70-200, compact and even fit in carry on luggage with removed ball head. Its not carbon fiber, but it was fitting my budget. So i would say do your research, go to Camera store to try it and buy one good future proof tripod or you will end up like Nick :D

I know it is expensive, but my RRS Series 1 TQC-14 (center column) with the BH-40 head is great for travel. Light weight about 4.5 (again with tripod, center column and ball head). Only problem, a bit short - 46 inches without center column, 57 with. Apex is small. Maybe not the greatest for those of you are taller, but for me at 5’7” almost perfect. But again expensive...

I was under the impression that elitists had porters to cary their gear? 😂 You make many great points such as the leg lock mechanism- perhaps one of the things I like about my Feisol tripods, which I have not had issues with. I go back and forth on the center column- some times I need it and other times it’s a problem. I find if I can swap it out easily and quickly that is a workable compromise especially for a lightweight backpacking tripod. Finally, you ended on a true statement, “Buy nice or buy twice.” The challenge is the definition for nice is often evolving and aided with personal experience.
