Hey everyone! In this video, I'm going to talk about the tripod collar mount and why you should be using it. Lots of people don't use a tripod collar mount because they think it's not necessary, but in my opinion, it's a really important piece of gear that can make a big difference in your photos and videos. Here are some of the things I'm going to be covering in this video 1. It helps to keep your camera level when mounted on a tripod. 2. It allows you to quickly and easily switch between vertical and horizontal compositions. 3. It provides extra support for your lens, which can be especially helpful if you're using a heavy or long lens. I'll explain why I think that is and show you some examples of how using a tripod collar mount can improve your shots. Thanks for watching! Just bought a Sigma 100-400mm telephoto lens and instantly noticed how horribly unbalanced it was on my Sony A7 iv/Manfrotto travel tripod! The lens collar looks like the perfect solution! Brilliant tutorial, thanks a lot for posting!

Thank you. Seems obvious now, but I was worried my incoming, first telephoto lense, would need a special mount to mount both the camera and lens to the tripod. Now I know the ring that comes with the lens will work and I can just mount the lens onto the tripod

Lovely video, thank you so much. My question would be, if I got a MP-E 65 mm macro lens that's about 1.5 and I have a R5 that's about 1.5 pounds, and therefore the weight of the back and the front is about the same, does the idea of the collar still count? Sorry just nitpicking on details. Since in this video, it was significant because of the weight difference, but in my case, there's little difference between the camera body and the lens in question.

Hi Nathan. Good question. Short answer is yes. The reason is that even though the camera and lens weight the same, if you mount the camera to the tripod, you will have the weight of the lens being supported by the camera. This throws the weight distribution off for the tripod. If you have a beefy tripod head it would not matter that much but it could be bad if you forget to hold on to the camera before loosening the tripod head. So YES but… for a different reason. Hope that makes sense. Thanks for the question.

Great stuff and very helpful. I noticed you placed a second plate on the lens's mounting bracket. What's the reason for that? Is it needed, or is it also okay to just attach the mounting bracket directly to the tripod?

Hi, yeah the bracket on the lens collar won't fit on to the tripod directly so you will need to attach a tripod plate on the bottom of it just like the one on the bottom of your camera. You can get some affordable ones on amazon so that you don't have to keep swapping it around. Makes life easier! :-)

Do you think I need one for a Sony FX30 with a.Tamron 35 - 150? The lens doesn't come with a lens collar
@DanCantero

With the FX30 being a a cinema camera, they are designed to be used with a cage as standard. I would recommend using a cage with a lens support system. There are various solutions available on the market for this. If you are going to be using it handheld, you might be able to get away by holding it the same way that you hold a photography camera but you'll probably run into limitations so I would go with a cage and a lens support system rather then a collar mount which is designed for photography cameras. Hope that helps. Dan

Will using the collar help with the sharpness of the photos? I’ve been using the canon EF 70-300 but mounting the tripod using the camera, and I’ve been unsatisfied with the sharpness. I’ve been getting sharper photos using handheld, and there doesn’t appear to be anything wrong with my tripod.

Hmmm. Interesting! The only thing I can think of is that the mount on either your camera or lens might be a bit loose. This might mean that when it's on the tripod, because of the weight if the lens, it might be moving slightly causing the lens to tilt down and causing a slight imperfection. Even the slightest of tilts will lead to it not focusing properly. When hand holding, because you are supporting the weight of the lens, it might be preventing from moving. Sounds a bit confusing but hope that makes sense. Dan
