I've often wondered whether the writers chose to include an Abe Lincoln reference since 1964-65 must have seen many expositions, articles, discussions in the news about the 100th anniversary of the end of Civil War. I remember puries from early 70s. tiny crystal balls.

As a DVDS superfan, I can think of a few possible topics for conversation. For example, I spend an inordinate amount of time trying to get the TIMELINE of Rob and Laura’s meeting, dating, engagement, marriage, honeymoon and Ritchie’s birth to work. I realize viewers have to extend a little license because it’s never going to fit quite right, but it might be worthy of a conversation. Thanks for starting the podcast!

I've always thought it would be fun to those flashbacks edited together into a chronological story of the their relationship.A little documentary about Rob and Laura.

I've been excited for this first episode ever since the podcast was announced, and it definitely did not disappoint! I especially enjoyed learning more about the great character actors who worked on the show, including Herb Vigran who (in addition to your rundown here) had a few quirky and memorable roles on the 60s/70s version of Dragnet. "The Great Petrie Fortune" is one of the go-to episodes I recommend to people who are new to the DVD Show, because of the wonderful writing. I can't wait for your next episode to drop! The two of you have a great chemistry and an encyclopedic knowledge of the show, and this is going to be a fun ride.

Like many of the DVDS episodes, scenes in The Great Petrie Fortune are given adequate time to jell. At least five minutes of exploration are alloted to finding out what's in the desk. Like the characters, the viewers are interested in the desk because it has our visual attention for about 40% of the 25 minutes. As Abby points out at the end of the podcast the desk is the subject in which the comedy revolves around. This is more satisfying than television involving too many quick-edit scene changes intended to hold viewers who lack the attention spans of Dick Van Dyke Show viewers. Keep up the good work, podcast hosts! Well done!

Terrific conversation about a show and episode I know so well. As you noted, it's an episode remarkable for its attention to detail, history, and also Rob's all too human brief struggle with greed versus historic preservation. You two are wonderful hosts!

Wonderful opening episode! Thoroughly enjoyed your commentary and banter! Alf Landon was the Republican Presidential nominee who lost in a landslide to Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1936.

Wonderful discussion! Two things: 1. Who bought that CSA war bond?? Not Hezekiah. He was the infant in the Gettysburg photo. (He was probably one of the diamonds in the Curse of the Petrie People broach, too, though Rob doesn't list him.) 2. An aside about Raymond Massey. He co-starred with Richard Chamberlain in the TV series "Dr. Kildare", as Kildare's supervisor, Dr. Gillespie. But even better, he was the evil brother opposite Cary Grant in "Arsenic and Old Lace". They wanted Boris Karloff, who was playing the role on Broadway, but the stage production wouldn't let Karloff out of his contract, so they cast Massey, who looked something like Karloff. BTW, Dick Van Dyke does a terrific Karloff. "Kind of like being the last living cell in a dead body, eh?"

Bravo to David & Abby!!! When you think you're an "expert" on TDVDS, and quickly realize there's so much more to learn in this deep-dive and loving tribute podcast, well, what a great feeling of discovery. It was like listening in on a private phone call mixed with a book club get together discussing the fine points of art. A highlight was Abby's dissection of Rob Petrie, the man, the conscience, the flawed husband, romantic & klutz in one. The character actors and their backgrounds may be suitable for a whole episode. They all deserve it. Three ideas for the future to consider: 1. Character name database to investigate Reiner's world and historical context, 2. Are there any viewers/listeners out there who attended a live taping with memories to share? 3. answering "listener mail questions" for future episodes. This podcast is a gift for the loyal fans. This is one of my favorite episodes. The back-and-forth between Rob and Laura as they go through the desk is so funny and natural, like a real-life couple. The glass doorknob, tin of pills, bunny key - all are inspired moments of comedy. I’d like to make an observation that others may disagree with: It was around 40 minutes before you got past the first act and into the second, where they go through the desk. As much as I love learning the minutiae of the show, I was anxious for you to move ahead to act two. Just my thoughts. Looking forward to more.

I totally agree with Abby. My fav episodes are 70% Rob and Laura talking through a problem at home. Who goes first, Sally or Donna? Poor Millie. rotten Jerry, The shoebox of love sonnets, I question whether anyone else skips Stacey Petrie episodes. I absolutely cannot stand his banjo act and am not much amused by the sleep walking gags.
