Tegel reminded me of flying into Stapleton Airport just before the new DIA (Denver International Airport) opened. DIA was already supposed to be open and many of the arrival/departure monitors had either been removed or not functioning along with many places already closed. Did not make for a nice layover that went from being a 1-hour layover to over 5 hours due to a blizzard. Great video on that unique flight, so much history with Tegel airport.

Tegel should have been kept open. It's much closer to the city centre and the affluent western neighbourhoods of Berlin than Brandenburg/Schoenefeld. If it were kept open it could become like London City - popular with business travellers - but without the runway limitations and slot restrictions. Greater Berlin covers such a wide geographic area that it's ideal for 2 airports.

Schönefeld is now a part of the BER, it’s now called "BER Terminal 5", but is closed at the moment. BER in general could be seen as an extension to Schönefeld as it was built south of Schönefeld and consists of parts of Schönefeld, just like the Terminal or the northern runway!
