Visited this beautiful island in the sixties. first time just after the islanders had moved back after the volcano had become dormant. We were delivering much needed stores and equipment. Second time 1970 and played a game of football on a very sloping pitch. Enjoyed a feast of atlantic crayfish which are abundant around the island. Went fishing and you just had to drop your bait in the water and bang!! superb fish on the line. The locals were very friendly and quaintly old fashioned. Like living in a time warp.

So sorry to see what happened to your beautiful island due to this storm. The history and social environment of Tristan de Cunha are really so fascinating to me… I have read a lot about your community and the struggle/beauty to live in such a remote area! Be safe and strong! Luciano (Milan, Italy)

@@robrepetto I notice from your video that there are not many solar panels or even wind turbines on the island. Is that the case?
@robrepetto3 жыл бұрын
@@joatmofa0405 hi, we have a small solar panel array that produces electricity into the main grid, and four solar water heaters. As for wind turbines, one was installed in the 1980's and blew away, and several small 12VDC ones in 2003, these were also damaged by the gusty winds at Tristan.
@joatmofa04053 жыл бұрын
@@robrepetto I worked on the Seychelles islands installing solar panel arrays & LiFePO4 batteries. It made a huge difference in the daily cost of expenses. You won't believe how much money the islands saved in diesel expenses for their Caterpillar Generators. Of course one could also then operate a EV (electric vehicle) similar to a golf cart on the island with solar recharging for the batteries! I'd love to design the solar power grid for your island!

I know you get lots of storms on Tristan but wonder whether you have witnessed an incease in their severity / number over the years as we have here (I'm in Manchester, UK)? Hello dear Robin. If you were able to make this video, does that mean you have a drone? How are things going more than 3 years after this storm? Would you like to make a new video and show the world how things are on the island now? And one more question, how do you have equipment and cars if the island’s port does not allow large ships to be received? As far as I know, all goods from the ship are loaded onto your boat, and only it can enter your port?
@robrepetto8 ай бұрын
Hello, You are correct, this video was shot using a drone. Unfortunately I left the island 3 years ago, just after shooting. Cars, containers, supplies for the islanders and other heavy equipment, get ashore by being lowered onto rafts and then ferried ashore . As you said, the ships can’t get into the harbour, so this is the only option.

Hi AJ, normal days are similar to everyone's. Get up, go to work at 6:30 in the summer & 7:30 in winter. After work, most people have their own work to do. It could be looking after your animal's, tending to our potato patches or vegetables, or doing maintenance to our house or property. It could also be helping someone else who needs some extra help.🙂
