I hope Gough Island will get a rodent-eradication project like the Auckland Islands or Hawadax Island near Alaska had. They proved very successful, despite their goals seemingly daunting at first. When they were initiated, people apparently questioned whether a 100 or 200 year old invasive population of rodents on such remote islands can be destroyed at all. But it worked, thankfully ! IIRC, Stewart Island to the south of New Zealand was also once overrun with rodents, but they got rid of them a few decades ago after starting the preparatory phase of making the island a haven for rare or endemic NZ bird species that weren't doing so well on the mainland. It's equally fascinating and scary how even harmless-looking house mice can start taking on characteristics of island gigantism if they've lived long enough in an environment where the native wildlife has no defensive instincts against them and there are no native predators either. The ones in this video are truly overgrown and fearless. A bad sign when it comes to an invasive species. I think I've read Tristan once had its endemic species of moorhen as well, but it went extinct. Maybe aside from rodent eradication, the Gough Island moorhen species could also be protected by establishing a small backup population on Tristan ? Here's hoping funds and awareness can be raised to get a mice removal project started. I might contribute to it financially once it gets greenlit.

They did achieve it, albeit on a couple other islands. So, it is possible. They've also come to like, 95% success rate in other places, too. Poison may not be the best choice, as it can be somewhat contaminating to the environment... they need to construct a larger trap of some sort, almost like those circular fenced traps used for wild hogs, but a smaller version. They place food inside, but it doesn't immediately trigger the trap with one animal. Someone, like a ranger or worker, will watch via a livestream/trail cam, and be notified whenever animals are present in or around the trap... more importantly, they leave the trap open, undisturbed and with bait, for a week to get the target animals used to it - as a safe food source. They'll be easily spooked if it goes off the first time and never return. After they start associating the trap as a safe place, with food, hopefully they start to redirect their appetite away from birds; then, once a sufficient group is inside, the person watching on a live stream locks the trap around them, alive, and then they are dispatched.

Poison the mice? Most of the native animals; seals, penguins and the albatrosses themselves do not feed on land so would be unaffected. You could avoid harm to the moor hens by scattering the poison pellets in the albatross nesting area. Everyone wants to bring cats. Does no one realize that the cats would also hunt the birds? And, clearly, few have learned the lessons of history: whenever humans introduce a new species, it invariably screws up the local ecosystem. Even when the introduction is intentional, it typically causes other problems that are just as bad or worse than the original. That said, I think a study should be conducted introducing a small number of neutered felines, maybe a dozen or a score, and see what effect they have. Also I'm curious; how are the birds not capable of feeling pain? Even if they don't have the instinct to perceive threat, you would think they would react to the pain of being bitten... eaten.
@sashawalls96936 жыл бұрын
León Coretz The birds can feel pain its that they evolved on a island where there's no natural predators so they evolved defenseless but your statement is true introducing another invasive species would not help another invasive infestation the only thing you can really can do is either take the birds off the island and plant baits(which they are planning to do next year) or kill off all the mice on that island.

I started to feed birds, and when I see these invasive predators skulking about, waiting to kill baby birds in the spring, I target them and shoot 'em all! It's been two years, and the native songbird population has bounced back, and I've built feeding stations and homes for them to help them with habitat loss (perpetrated by humans). No more cats and rats and squirrels raiding nests and killing native birds has made a visible difference, and they flourish in the habitat they were meant to have, free from the perils of these vicious, invasive predators.

These birds should learn to adapt or they’ll be wiped out in a decade or two.

At this stage Hunting them is literally not an option we have to poison them all in order to eradicate them . The population of albatross on gorge Island is about 8 million and It is decreasing by 2 million each year because their eggs and chicks literally are being eaten alive by mega mice . At this rate in the coming 5 to 6 years albatross sea birds will be extinct from Gourgh Island.

@@rebeccaanderson5626 that’s very alarming. I wonder what’s the status now? Is there an improvement or is it still worrisome?

@@Bulbagaba992 The situation is even worse now especially because these mice have evolved over a period of two centuries to grow in body size by about 50% as compared to a normal house mice . The government had planned to start Rat radication campaign by dropping poison pellets but now that thing has been postponed for about an year because of covid . Considering the fact that eradication itself takes about 1 year . The population of Albatross sea birds is expected to decline by 4 million in the next two years before the project is completed .

They should add some small snake population to the island, big enough to kill mice but small enough to not harm the birds.

It seems to me that the best way against small rodents are larger mammals. Someone rightly said that there need to think about cats. Also a good idea be to settle of owls. But apparently the government does not care about the island fauna.
@TheGrmany698 жыл бұрын
And also we could introduce foxes, they will eat all the chicks so the mice couldn't feed anymore. Do you understand the wrong logic, right?

i think,if owl,some small species,(Scops owls) they can catch small mices,but albatros chick are too big for them...scops owls need tree holes for reproduction...with artifical nest boxes can be regulate amount of predators

too small? You would think that of mice too wouldnt you think? So no, introducing anything else from the mainland is a really bad idea and would only make things worse
