Tristram Shandy: Man-Midwives, Humors, and Nerves

Man-midwives, the nervous system, and bodily fluids . . . all part of Laurence Stern's Tristram Shandy! Also known as 'The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman,' this novel shows a hilarious - yet also terrifying - side of medicine in the 18th century. Sterne has a few things to say about quackery and medical practices that weren't as cutting-edge as they were made out to be. We'll look at how man-midwives invaded female spaces and how Sterne criticizes this new figure in how he depicts Tristram's birth. We'll also look at the portrayal of other medical practices and ideas in the novel, such as humors and the nervous system.
