One time in middle school it was lunch period and me and my friend went to the bathroom, and as soon as we walk in we see this kid who must have been standing on the toilet in the stall that was closest to the urinals. Myeah... the reality is Opie was the literal boss of O&A and was the one who saw talent in and hired Norton full-time and got Patrice on the show as a regular and substitute when Norton wasn't on. Opie and Patrice were tight friends too. Shows need people who guide and segment shit, the most thankless job ever when you have the most hilarious people ever making good radio, and everything thinks you suck for not being funny.

I also don't want to constantly defend Opie, lord knows he's guilty of a ton of douchebag shit especially during the last few years of the show, but I think taking calls was actually a mandate from Sirius having to do with audience engagement related to marketing this and that. Someone explained it to me ages ago, I wish I had better memory of the specifics, but that's essentially it. He still took calls at dumbass times because *he* felt the hilarious banter was somehow winding down and needed to move on. Other times he purposely did it to try to alpha his way on the air to pretend he's as worthwhile as Ant and Jim being funny while Opie had nothing to contribute to the conversation. At the same time, dude still got a ton of hate from people who still don't understand you need a workhorse like Opie to do the actual work to build and produce the show so the on-air talent can waltz in and be set up to do their thing. It's not like all three strolled in, sat in their chairs, and 4 hours of mostly hilarious radio just happened lol. Hate Opie because he's an unfunny douche but don't blindly hate a guy who did build the funniest radio show of all time that will never be matched again.
