The seventh is important because it leads somewhere. The third, to define the chord and the seventh leads our ears to the resolution. The purpose of “dominant” chords are to resolve our ears somewhere. I love that you talk about the importance of how to voice correctly. I’ve been learning closed voicing and it’s key to make sure you do not cloud the melody line. Therefore we put all other harmonies below the melody line. Voice according to the melody line, that’s why your voicing sounds so good

That jump to the trick is like throwing a 12 inch piperinch at the keyboard. I am so happy that I can follow at this level , now I see the tritone come alive at the keyboard. You are one of the better teachers on YT, but here we have another meandering "tritone simplifed" like on so many channels. It's an improvised one take explanation, and no matter how gifted and blessed you are, no concise explanation of the concept is coming with those two limitations. So maybe it's a teaser. The real thing would get you 600k views, and many more purchases, but would take alot of planning and editing. I learned anyway and you are so pleasant, thank you. Thanks for clarifying that this is not a beginners concept. It's so frustrating for me to constantly see requests to play a lick or movement in another key. If you are unable ti play and transpose in all 12 keys, you're a beginner. Then I get these students and they get frustrated when I make them do the brain-work cause they just want the flair and flash. Haha You explain so clearly. Thanks!

at 12:01, would it work to play E-flat7 instead of E-flat maj7? If so, could you also tritone substitute the E-flat 7 into A7/C# and then resolve into C minor or A-flat maj7?
@PianoLessonwithWarren4 жыл бұрын
I make these decisions purely by listening, not theory, have you tried it? It not you should and if you like the sound that that’s all that matters 😊🙏🏾
@0biwan74 жыл бұрын
@@PianoLessonwithWarren It didnt quite work, but after an hour of experimenting with different voicings and inversions of the A7, I found that the A7/E sounds good to me if I also change the B-flat chord before it into a B-flat/D. I'm starting to understand what you mean by needing to experiment with voicings and inversions. With the original E-flat dominant seventh, it really doesnt matter how you voice it or what bass note you pick, it will sound good enough. But when substituting the A7, some combinations work much better than others. Thank you so much for your help with this. As an added bonus, the A7 makes it even more ambiguous as to whether the song is in F minor or E-flat major. Part of me wonders if it starts out in F minor and moves to E-flat major the way the Old Covenant changes to the New Covenant.
@seanonel2 жыл бұрын
I may be wrong, but it may be possible to resolve a tritone to a diminished half a step UP instead of down eg instead of playing G7-F#m7, I play Db7-Ddim7-F#m7. I'd be interested in your thoughts on this... Also, I learned to flatten the 5th to form my tritone. Is there a specific reason why you say to augment the 4th? Is there any advantage to that thinking? Many thanks for your tutorials Warren! 🙏🙏
@PianoLessonwithWarren2 жыл бұрын
A tritone is three whole steps, which is why we use the augmented 4th. Practically #4 or b5 is the same note. But in a theory exam if they which isn’t the correct spelling of a tritone “C-F#” or “C-Gb”? The C-F# would be correct.

Thanks Warren for another great lesson. I need a clarification on something. If we assume that the F7 is a primary dominant then we are perhaps looking at Bb major as the parent key. If we consider the diatonic chords under the dominant family, we have F7 and Amin7b5 in that family and also these two chords also share A and Eb. Therefore is it possible that B7 which is the tritone sub for F7 can also be substituted for Amin7b5 since they also share the A and Eb notes. I also love the way you kind of spread the notes in a chord when u land on it. It gives some cool flavour can u do a tutorial on that please. Thanks for your kindness.
@PianoLessonwithWarren6 жыл бұрын
amos asante theoretical yes, B7 should be able to substitute Am7(b5). However, Am7(b5) is also the “ii” Chord for G minor key, and ii almost always want to resolve V, which would be D7. So without testing this theory on a song we don’t know how it will sound. Good question though 😊👍🏽

so with your example of substituting an F7 chord with the B7 because is shares the a-eflat trione, can a tritone substitution also use chords another than a dominant seventh (e.g. a7 flat five, or e flat7 flat five?) that still share the same tritone?
