@@RichV20 Nope. In the inside conan podcast, it was revealed that Smigel was told this joke by one of the writing partners who was there along with him and he laughed when he first heard it and instantly said this on camera.

@@ag-bk5wf Sometime in 2020 of kidney disease is what I remember, hard to verify online. Smigel talked about him at length on a podcast and said he was a really good hearted guy that was dealt a bad hand in life but was never bitter about it.

Conan said something along the lines that “which of these buttons calls you parents” burn was the peak of television. Granted he said that within a couple years after it was made but man it’s an instant classic. Props to Smiegel (sp?) for getting that line out without laughing more than he did.

When you consider how many ways this could have gone wrong - from interacting with a little girl, a pregnant lady, and getting manhandled by someone who might very well have real psychological issues - Smigel deserves big, big props for making it all go so right. A masterclass in improv, no question.

He was not doing it to demonize them, just have some laughs. Nowadays people who do it don't have that joviality. Too serious.

I worked with a guy who was like one of these fans, wore his jedi outfit to the opening of the movies, had all the action figures, had the best most realistic light sabers, etc. Just recently learned he passed away young unexpectantly, a true shame, was a very nice guy with a family. Rip and hope he is happy beyond!

@@chriscannone8617 That's true the quality in anime really went downhill. It's not what it used to be. Anime from the 90's/early 00's was so unique and different. There were shows like DBZ or Sailor Moon, but then there were shows like Please Save My Earth (not very well known but one of my favorites mangas/anime) or the early Gundam series. Hardly any fan service and not so loud and bright. More stylish and a quiet sort of beauty.

Definitely. But he still completely hits it out of the park in his Wiener's Circle, Michael Jackson, and the unedited version of his takedown of Don Rickles, who had been coasting on non-funny non-sequiturs for decades. His Chris Christie segment was outstanding too, and his Bon Jovi one had some hilarious stuff too. He's got some duds, like anyone would, but overall is just so damn good.

All my buddies were stoners and we always watched Conan at my house...........so we all just laughed and talked about it later. In fact the only time I watched anything back then was with friends. Now I only watch things alone, intentionally. The memories are nice though.

In 1999 we were sharing a pre-release version of the Matrix on the university LAN (split into two halves, due to file size limitations). By 2002 you could find funny video clips like this, but someone would have had to have a TV tuner card, capture it OTA or from cable, compress it, and then share it at pretty low quality on LimeWire.

Ahh one of the best nights I’ve had...I remember watching this opening night after having just watched Episode 2 with my friends. We were 17, we just smoked a joint before this came on and I don’t think I’ve ever laughed so hard in my life. Seriously, it’s one of my fondest memories. We were on the floor, curled up in pain, crying from laughing so hard. Great times for sure. Miss those days.

I’ve seen this a million times and just realized that, “You don’t deal with lesser life forms? You must be a lonely guy” is actually a compliment. Triumph is accidentally saying the guy is a superior life form. He was trying to say the guy was the lowest life form, but then the insult should actually be, “You don’t deal with lesser life forms? You must be a popular guy.”
