In an inspiring testament to determination and government support, Ismael Wai, a 32-year-old University of Technology (Unitech) graduate, has become a symbol of hope and success in Papua New Guinea. Coming from a humble background in Chimbu and raised by a single mother in West New Britain, Ismael's story is not just his own, but a reflection of the transformative power of education.
Ismael's journey was fraught with financial hurdles until the Higher Education Loan Programme (HELP), a pivotal initiative by Prime Minister Hon. James Marape, paved the way for his academic aspirations. Launching into Unitech in 2020 as a non-school leaver, HELP supported Ismael’s education until his graduation in 2024, marking a new chapter in his life.
Ismael’s remarkable story is set against the backdrop of Prime Minister Marape's announcement that over 35,000 students have benefited from HELP since 2020.
Hear firsthand from Ismael on the importance of accessibility in education and the bright future it heralds for Papua New Guinea.
