Thanks for this video. I had trouble getting the spring ring at the outside of the needle bearing side off. It is so thin. I removed the lock ring from the inside after knocking the grease seals off inside and out. I used long needle nose. I ground the tips a little to fit the holes in the lock ring better but it may not have been necessary. I could squeeze the inner lock ring smaller but couldn't pop it out. I put a punch into a vice sticking out the top a little higher than the lock ring sits inside the hub. I rested the hub on the vice. I put the hub so the punch was across from the lock ring gap. Using the needle nose I squeezed the lock ring gap small pressing the gap side towards the wall of the hub, not trying to pull it away to the center or twisting it. Just an easy solid squeeze pressing it into the side wall. The ring left the grove on the opposite side from the needle nose and gap. I tilted that side up slightly to put the punch in place. Lowering it flat put a little pressure the lock ring. It was pushed out of the slot by the punch. It was out of its' slot across from the gap but stuck. I moved the punch a little higher in the vice. Gave it another squeeze with the needle nose same way. Just resting it on the punch with light pressure, it popped right out. I drove the needle bearing out through the center of the hub taking it out the opposite side. Now I can remove that tiny spring clip on the outside of the needle bearing race easier. The spring clip on the side with the ball bearings, wasn't so tiny. It was easier to pin one side with a small screw driver and pry out the other side with another. To get the lock ring off the ball bearing side I used the needle nose in the holes and small screw driver to pop it out of its' slot.

good luck with the project, for some reason honda hubs seems to work for much longer without maintenance. I think some VFR's have like 100kkm without hub being opened, and with triumph that is just pure impossibility. Maybe the bearing seals or something is better in honda hub.

VFR uses a much larger bearing, even the 800cc VFR has a much larger needle bearing and probably is properly greased from the factory. Now Triumph is using a significantly smaller needle bearing with quite a bit more power than the VFR..........

Mine has over 100,000 Km now so I think it is time to open up the rear hub. I just hope I can get that 46mm loose!

James, Excellent video. I'm currently doing the exact same rebuild on my 1993 VFR750. My rebuild got halted due to a troublesome retainer-clip that holds the main bearing in. Can you please explain how you were able to remove the retainer clip? You show it being installed, but removal would be helpful. It's the clip that is similar to the regular c-clip (with holes) but I can find no easy way (or tool) to remove it without the holes. Best regards to you. :)

yes it's little tricky to get out. I use small screw drivers. pry out the end and stick another screw driver under the tip. then go forward and when the tip is out enough start to pry it up. stick screw driver under it. good luck!!

Hi James...I'm riding a 13' speed triple...care to share where u purchase the bearings? Should be the same right? My rear wheel slightly shakes now...before it gets worse I'd better change it

shamz58 It was some generic bearing shop, I just took the old bearings there and they ordered the new ones. Day later i had new bearings. Good luck for the change. In some shops you could take the whole hub there and ask them to change the bearings.

@@JamesParus Okay cool. Mine is 2007 and needs lots of work. Shall try and fix it this spring (April) such as Forks, Steering bearings, all wheel bearings and list goes on. I use to live in Helsinki, Turku and have left my car and zx7 at my ex's families house. Do you live in that area? Do you still have this Speed Triple?

James Parus Hey James Never been to Tempere but know few people from there. Hey so I am gonna start working on my bike as of this week now that it’s getting warmer. I have a new problem. Notice that after I tighten my chain, and ride the bike few miles, the chain comes loose again all the way? And YES I do tighten the 17mm bolt that locks the sprocket . Do you know what is wrong? I have never had any of my bikes do that in the past.

@@mikedhirani8059 speed triple needs more chain slack compared to normal sport bikes. At least inch or so. If you get someone to sit on the bike and see the chain it tightens alot. So I assume you have used too little chain slack. Normal bike can be 15 to 25mm. Triple needs 25 to 35mm .
