Perfect review! just never get tired of this beautiful motorcycle. The fact that the straight line performance doesn’t quite match the competition can also be a positive since you can enjoy more of this bikes potential on the road. The handling of this bike is still class leading. One downside I believe you missed is cleaning the bike properly is quite time consuming. Dirt really gets in everywhere! I bought a 2019 RS exactly two years ago, and I still love it!

Just added a 2019 Speed Triple S, because of my 2007 Tiger 1050. Speed Triple is comfortable (surprised at the lack of wind buffet even in triple digits), quick, sounds sweet, I wouldn't mind a little more in the electronics department, but the most important thing about the motorcycle is, I want to ride it all the time.

I bought a '19 S, Crystal White, brand new off the floor where it had been sitting for over a year. Here in southern Missouri few people know what a Triumph is. My local dealer is 35 mi away and is also a Yam, Kaw, Suz and Indian dealer so his Triumphs remain his best looking, best finished, in many cases best performing bike brand. Yet they're also his lowest volume brand in the store. I've ridden for over 50 yrs and have owned all Japanese brand bikes until I bought this Speed Triple. I've never had any significant problems with any brand. My most recent bike had been a '19 Yam MT09 - great engine but somewhat "nervous" street handling even with the fully adjustable suspension. Previous to the MT I rode an '05 Kaw ZX10 for over 10 yrs which had been, by far, the finest bike I had ever owned. With just over 5k on the clock the Triumph has been wonderful so far. With fully adjustable Showa suspension (very similar to my ZX10) I have found it remarkable in recreating the "feel" of my ZX while being considerably more comfortable to ride on day long trips. Fit and finish are beyond any of my previous Japanese bikes but then you pay a bit more for it. The engine has been wonderful - muscular torque over a very broad range, more "relaxed" than the MT, more sport touring oriented than the ZX - truly one of the great all-around engines I've had the pleasure of riding with a stock exhaust note that sings my perfect tune. This bike could very easily be transformed into a great sport tourer with just a bit of a screen up front, lower footpegs and higher bars. Gearing is sport touring wide and comfort for me is excellent (that "firm but plush" capability of the better modern day inverted fork designs). I'll have this bike for sometime to come as is scratches all my itches while the new 1200 has become so much more track focused and expen$ive!

In the last decade of the five I’ve been riding, I’ve bought three new and one almost new motorcycle. That’s not bragging, it’s confessing. Looking back, I shake my head and wonder what I was thinking. After all, isn’t there a plethora of “demos” and unsold / barely used 2018 -19 bikes for sale? Well, maybe not a “plethora” but how often does a fellow get to use the word plethora? Anyway, a Speed Triple is a real contender for my new “buy anything but new” attitude. Thanks for the insight. That aside, I’d love to hear if I’m an anomaly or representative of a demographic that starting to grow weary of dealership fees and new bikes designed to accessorize, option and farkle a rider to bankruptcy?

Lovely bike, great review as always. One thing regarding keyless: I have a 2019 Tiger 1200 XRT with keyless. What I do is keep the master key on a lanyard around my neck and then have one of the ‘dumb’ keys in a pocket to access fuel tank, top-box, panniers, etc. I don’t have a problem and prefer not having the master key in an ignition barrel. So, for me at least, keyless works well.

I really like this review because you cover so many things compared to others. Usually reviewers only concentrate on the performance side, how nicely bikes wheelie and how they do on the race track. But to me that is quite insignificant because I don't do wheelies and almost any bike with +140bhp is fast enough and I can say it without reviews. Things like slow speed comfort around town, gas mileage etc are more interesting to me. And yes, mileage does matter even when buying an expensive bike because I'm definitely not rich but wanted to buy a dream bike and worked hard to save money for it :) Regarding keyless ignition, I love it. When paired with electronic fork lock (which absolutely no one talks about in their reviews) you only have to take the key out of your pocket when refueling and I personally rarely have to fill up my bike more than once a day so it's not a problem.

Two weeks into ownership of my 2020 Speed Triple RS in Crystal White. I love it. Unfortunately with winter hitting, I've only been able to do 144 miles on it, but it's really great. I don't mind that it's not the fastest Streetfighter on the market, it's more than adequate. I do agree about the boring colors, but the Crystal White is a fantastic color. Also annoyed that no heated grips standard (I fitted them in my garage the first night) and the fact that UK owners the quickshifter is an option seems silly.

Your 'like to with with' reviews are excellent and very real world vs what we get on launch reviews. Have to agree, Triumphs paint schemes are pretty unimaginative these days..they used to have some great colours! I traded an older street triple for one a few months back, as less than a year old with a number of extras made it a bargain. It had to be white, as flat black with dayglow yellow accents looks cheap and lets the bike down. If you think that area under the cowl is small, wait until a prospective purchaser a tail tidy. The additional wiring and connectors eat into that space even more. I seriously doubt I'd fit anything under that cowl to charge and use that USB port. Once you have the cowl off, you'll need a 5mm allan key to remove the seat..and there are more tools under there..but that makes little sense if you need your own tools to get to them, so underseat storage is a significant downside compared to the street. The quick shifter may have been set to 'off' in the menu. I disconnected the battery to connect an accessory sat nav holder...went out for a ride, no QS. Found fairly well buried in the menus there was a QS setting item. I guess default it's off. Having said that, love the handling, seems to have a tighter turning circle vs the street, feels more planted, love the looks and wanted the twin underseat exhaust, which I have a feeling will go on the next gen bike....always liked the twins on your street and didn't like the single under slung one on my later street. The torque at real world (i.e. legal) speeds feels just as good as my K1300, but feels lighter, so happy with the power delivery as well/ Have to have at lest one Triumph in the garage..plus I 'think' these at least were made in the UK. Not that it matters too much, but nice if it is UK made.

This bike is perfect for those tours, tolerable at speed on the big roads and well worth that effort once I get to the fun roads. I skipped the 2018 version, not feeling it was really worth upgrading. I was excited to hear Triumph are coming out with a major revision, hopefully with a solid power upgrade, not that it really needs more power. If the new version is better I'll get one. If not I'll be perfectly happy riding my '14 for some years to come. It seems quite reliable.

When I test rode one of these in 2018 the rear seat cowl flew off at 60mph as I was riding along the A605 near Oundle. Fortunately I saw it disappear in the mirrors and managed to retrieve it before a truck ran over it. It was a bit scratched but not too badly. I wasn't impressed with how it and the main seat secures. Seems to be a theme on Triumphs. My Sprint ST1050 has seat secured by two bolts which are a nightmare to take out and put back in. Triumph should take some lessons from Honda on how to secure seats. Apart from that it was a lovely bike to ride and agree with you completely. The reworked 1050 engine is a peach really free revving now and a joy to listen to. As you say more than enough power for the roads but still down on power compared to say the BMW S1000R and SDR. I don't find Triumph TFTs too bad, but then I am a kid who likes kids stuff. Great that the switchgear is illuminated. The high level Arrow cans are very nice. Brakes and suspension were awesome for road use and I should imagine pretty good on a track too. If I recall Statham at 44teeth loved it when he reviewed it on the track but did say it could do with more power which I agree with, but still not a slow bike, but quite a bit slower than it's rivals which is a shame as the rest of the bike is awesome and can easily deal with more power. Keyless ignition is a solution to a problem that never existed. I wish bike manufacturers didn't use it. Ok have coded keys to immobilise they bike so it can't be started with a screw driver, but don't go any further. Triumph wanting an additional £350 for the QS when many naked bikes have it included is a bit of a cheek. But then I suppose Triumph would just put up the price of the bike if it was included. Don't like the view of your camera facing you on the bars it makes it look like your are riding in a twisted uncomfortable riding position. Maybe you could reposition it or change the aspect to eliminate this distortion?

The 1050 engine gives you all the power you will ever need with a great exhaust noise Triumph are trying to clear out the old stock and there is some great bargains to be had on this model. Just ordered a 2019 speed triple s,sold my 2017 speedy & concentrated on my 400/4 & moto morini,,then picked up a new cb650r in June as I was looking for a modern ride.Worst mistake I've made since selling the triple R.The honda was so bland and character less,if had had been able to get a test ride it would have saved me a fortune.Lesson learned and the new speed is going to be a keeper.;-)

Thank you for the insights! I'm a former 955i Speed Triple owner and was looking toward my next motorbike from a weird list of possilities, including either a Honda CBR650R, CB1000R or even an older CBR900RR 'FireBlade' -- or going with what I know and get a newer, 2016-2020 Speed Triple 1050. The idea of the modern Honda inline fours is appealing but the steel frames give me pause and the damning notion that they are 'bland' when that is exactly what a inline-four sport bike SHOULDN'T be is frightful for their cost of entry. The FireBlade I have no doubt would be an exciting riot but it answers a different question and its age and carbs likely make it more suited to a second bike instead of only bike.

I've had one of these for 2 and a half years. Put on a small low exhaust. Those giant twin cans ruin the look and are just an extra 15lbs imo. I like keyless. Very convenient. It's my only rig. Gets used for commuting and fun. It's pretty good at both. I keep thinking about going to something else, but it's hard to think of something that would be worth it.

I've just bought a low mileage black RS from my local dealer. What an awesome machine it really is. One comment when comparing this with the 2014 Street Triple R that I traded up from, the gearbox feels a bit agricultural in comparison. There is a loud Harleyesque clunk when engaging 1st, and sometimes 4th to 5th can be a bit clunky. The Shift assist (quick shifter) works well, both up and down the box, but on the odd occasion its been a bit harsh. Other than that it is stomp down amazing!
@TheMissendenFlyer3 жыл бұрын
I'm surprised to hear that David.....
@David40S3 жыл бұрын
@@TheMissendenFlyer I found out that they had supplied the bike to me with too much chain slack (I'm apparently a lighter bloke that the average lardy who rides these!). As a result the chain was slapping and this gave a very harsh change with the quick shifter. I liked your review of the new Speedy RS, but am glad I bought the 1050.

I came back to look at this review again after seeing this week's test of the 2021 Speed Triple RS. My local dealer is offering a pretty good deal on a 2020 "S" with the up and down quick shifter included. I was waiting for the the latest model as a possible replacement for my 2012 Speedy but now I'm thinking that I should go for one of the last of the 2020 models... especially considering the MCN review you highlighted on your monthly update.
@David40S3 жыл бұрын
@@alanhall7213 I gave a lot of thought to this too, and while I think Triumph get better and better, super/hyper nakeds seem to be moving towards ridiculous high end power and track day use/posing rights down the pub. How much more power do you need than the 148 bhp of the previous generation. Michael Neeves from MCN loved the new bike on track, but was critical of the suspension on public roads, bemoaning the loss of the plush feeling of the previous bike. The other thing to consider is that the new iteration is way more expensive, with a lot of features that have little to do with normal road riding. I love the previous version and while the gearbox is a little agricultural compared with the Street Triple and from what I've read, the new model, once its set up, the older bike is a peach.

I still love my 2016 Speedy and the 2021 spy pics of the reported 180bhp new model look very interesting. This should fit in well with the SDR, S1000R and Tuono. I don't think most people will manage to get the best out of the 200bhp hyper naked bikes like the Streetfighter, though a lovely bike anyway. That's makes the new Speed a potential upgrade for me on the list. I'll pretend I didn't see the rear cowl howl. All the best Andy and thank you for another great review.

As you know, I've got a Speed Triple and a Speed Twin ! Your review is spot on. I moan about the look of the twin headlights, don't know if I should say, for actually lighting up the road, I find them better than the Speed Twin. The lighting is more "even" on the Triple. Maybe I should stop moaning about the "look". Wet weather riding. What's that ? :-D Pillion. My wife will not get on the Triple, she happily gets on my Speed Twin. Triumph do supply both the seat cowl and a pillion seat for the Triple at no extra cost when you get the bike. Pillion seat is very small and high up, along with high pegs, and the high level exhaust could be an issue on the thighs. It is not a bike for pillions ! I'm getting 50 MPG :) When I got my one, in a deal in Aug 2020, it came with an inclusive quick shifter. The heated grips got added via an options voucher. Plus Triumph were giving £1000 off if you took the finance, which you could clear within say a week or so and only pay a very tiny amount of interest (£40 ish) . So £960 off, assuming you could clear the finance, and a few of the options at no extra cost. Quick shifter on my one works really well. I love it. ( Something I'd like on the Speed Twin, but that doesn't seem easily possible ) In Aug 2020, I test rode the current Street Triple RS and the current Speed Triple. I much preferred the feel of the Speed. The massive amount of low down grunt, and it feels more "meaty". Exhaust note on the Speed is a lot better. The current Street Triple RS is a very good bike, just not as good as the Speed Triple RS IMO. Only thing I prefered on the current Street Triple is it has a larger fuel tank. Yep it's a Sunday back road blaster, that's what I've got my one for. As a commuter in town centres, it would be fine, but you don't need 148 BHP for that. You could tour on it but without a pillion ! Comparing both my bikes, I prefer riding the Speed Triple. I prefer looking at my Speed Twin (it is still a good ride, just not as good as the Triple) . Don't tell the Speed Twin or Triple that !

As I’ve said before, I bought my 12 plates street triple r after watching one of your reviews years ago, loved it. Sold it due to break up with missus. I then test rode the speed triple rs, I liked it, but in the same day I rode the ktm superduke GT and a Ducati street fighter, both which blew The triumph out of the water. The triumph was great in isolation, but not next to the competition, hopefully the 1160 makes up for this. I ended up with the street triple rs 2018 and love it like my old bike. Also no QS on the RS when the competition had blipper and QS as standard. Although I do like the carbon...

Keyless is a Marmite debate. I love the concept, its easy to use, especially the central locking on the fuel tank cap on my bike.... as you say with the Triumph, the key is king for opening the seat. One point mind.... from 80’s bikes onwards until recently, they came with very weedy and weak keys which bent or broke at the least provocation. Now with the crossover from the car world, the keyless fob comes with a very substantial key so perhaps its been a means to an end to have decent keys and locks on bikes at last.
@TheMissendenFlyer4 жыл бұрын
Maybe - keyless works for me on bikes with many locks (like big tourers with keyless panniers) but on a bike like this I’m quite happy to be “old school” and have a key....

Hey Mr flyer. When using your go pro for the night demo, set it to highest res (4k) 30 fps. This will a allow 1/30 shutter speed giving you an extra stop of light. The higher res will also help. I have a '19 Speed Triple RS. I *love* and adore that machine. 15,000+ miles so far. Those Super Corsa's in the wet and/or cold... NO. I swapped mine out after the first summer and after a few different sets of tires, I find my favorite is the Pirelli Diablo Rosso III. I had some moments on the Super Corsas in the cold and one in the wet. Tar strips in the wet = scary. I removed the pillion pegs/legs straight away. I replaced the horn straight away. I average about 47 mpg. The screen layout you were using it with is my preferred of all they offer - and I also actually like that one personally but do agree with you on the Mickey Mouse/Fisher-Price look of some of the other layouts. I cannot understand who thinks some of those layouts are functional. The turning circle is terrible, I agree. Hearing you do a "woo hoo!" on the overtake = my thoughts exactly. It's no Tuono, but it is fast enough; at least for me. Give me torque in the midrange and I'm a happy guy. (A naked above 90mph is not fun, so ultimate top-end speed matters little to me). I cannot stand (!!!) the sticker graphics they put on it the last two years, mine came with the more tasteful red/gray stripes which I've either swapped for carbon fiber parts and replaced or I've removed them from mine (the all-black colorway). When shopping for a new bike back in 2018, I narrowed it down to the Street Triple RS vs the Speed RS; one thing blew me away immediately - torque. It was a no-brainer choice. I thoroughly enjoyed this review and it feels like home to hear that triple revving up.

Morning Andy; good informative vid as always. Touring shouldn’t be a big issue. A single geezer with a tank bag, a tail pack and a small ruck-sack should have plenty of space if you’re hotelling it or doing B&B’s. How many pairs of undercacks do you need? I had an old 955i back in the day and I have been recently tempted, but bikes to me are toys and really it’s hard to justify a new machine at these price points. Now maybe a Speed Triple, ~~ ‘12 for £4.5k ... 👍

I very nearly bought one of these a few months back. The Superduke won out though. I'm not ready to have a more sensible bike yet. With regards to keyless ignition, in a car I don't get it. You need to have it in your hand to unlock the thing. On a bike I've been converted purely on the basis that I cannot leave my key in the ignition or top box, we've all done that at some point, and you're less likely to have it pinched by some A-hole at a set of lights. I would also like the option of being able to put it into an ignition though.
@matthewoliver90553 жыл бұрын
Got keyless ignition for my car, certainly don't need it in my hand to unlock it, just walk up to a door and open it, keys in my pocket, on a bike can't see the point especially if you need it for petrol cap
@Icem4n843 жыл бұрын
@@matthewoliver9055 I don't need the key for the petrol cap, you have 30 seconds from when you turn the engine off to lift the cap. It varies bike by bike. The amount of times I've accidentally left the key in on my bike having keyless ignition is a good idea.

Been saving this one for an undistracted eve, I love the 1050 Speed Triple, and would utterly have one in my garage if it weren't for the rumoured 1160 :-) I don't understand why other manufacturers do not do the right angle tyre valves, so much easier to use! Oof, you bad man throwing the seat cowl on the floor! :D It is the touring ability, basically the luggage issue that puts me off, fortunately I can own a couple of bikes so can ride somit else on the longer trips, but it would be nice if it had a stronger subframe to allow for luggage options! I very much can't wait to see what the new Speed Tipple will be like, and I shall probably own one if they release it before the money burns a hole in my pocket! :D
