Thanks for the video! I really appreciate how short and to the point it was. The job looked simple before, but I figured it wouldn't hurt to watch someone else do it first.

Nice easy job this morning Steve, love the access in the engine bay. I’ve actually got a Spitfire with my name on it, just need to collect it but with Covid I haven’t been able to this year. It’s as good as a freebie just swopped something for it. All I know about it is that it’s been stored under a tarp for a few years. My intention is to drag it home and if it’s too far gone to break it for spares to finance another project.
@SteveDentonClassics3 жыл бұрын
Oh great stuff, there so much you can do with a Spitfire, even if it shot, there are many new paths you can take, like a spartan body, or D Type replica body. If its an early Spitfire say mk 1 2 or 3 (roundtails) then really they should be left alone and restored in there own right as they are getting rarer. Fingers crossed this evil will pass soon and we can get on with our projects 👍

Slightly simpler than a P.I. pump. It reminds me I had a leaking pump on my VW beetle, when I discovered it, it was literally spaying out 😮. Great video as usual mate 👍
@SteveDentonClassics3 жыл бұрын
That's the brown trousers moment, a leak on the pressure side! Fortunately Lou was only leaking from the suction side, so fuel only leaked when she as standing still without the engine running. Still much better fixed, fuel leaks are just dangerous 👍

Brilliant. I wondered why there was a little puddle of fuel sitting on top of the pump in my Spitfire 1500. Didn't know they could fail at that point. Will replace mine this week
@SteveDentonClassics3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it's a good idea to replace if you have a leak, they are cheap enough to buy, and easy enough to fit 👍

Nice simple job Steve. We've had problems with the replacement GT6 fuel pumps having a much higher pressure than original. Another issue to look out for.

Hi Steve, Thanks for the video, it really helped! Problem that I’ve got now is that my carbs Both food all of the time now!!! Any ideas? Thanks, John
@SteveDentonClassics2 жыл бұрын
Some suppliers of the replacement fuel pumps are made to too higher fuel pressure, sometimes you have to ad in a pressure release valve between the pump and the carbs. It's just the sad fact that now one side fits all or we won't make them, and sadly that's just how it can be with suppliers

Great video. I have a 75 TR6 (American car). I also need to change my fuel pump. The two mounting screws look pretty tough to get to on the TR6. Any helpful tips for getting to the fuel pump? Thanks
@SteveDentonClassics2 жыл бұрын
HI Phil, we don't have many carb TR6's in the UK, but from what I've seen of them they are not much different to doing one on a Spitfire or a 2000. Just a supply pipe and feed pipe, and 2 mounting nuts. You'll need to just clamp off the supply line so you don't get too much fuel spill. But other than that they look pretty straight forward. Just use a socket with a short extension and a ratchet to remove the nuts, and do the same as I did with the Spitfire 👍

@@SteveDentonClassics Thanks for the reply Steve but all the emissions attached to my engine created a challenge for getting to the fuel pump. But I did manage to get it off and install a new one. Needless to say I will be removing all the emissions from my engine asap. Looking forward to more of your videos on Triumphs specifically the TR6.

Does the pump arm need to behind the cam or on the front side? I know on some British sports cars this is important to make sure the cam actuates the fuel pump.
@SteveDentonClassics2 ай бұрын
You just push it up and in so the the camshaft operates the pump

This is the same engine on the MG Midget 1500 and removing the fuel pump is really awkward. Spitfire bonnet is a real advantage.

My fuel pump is leaking oil from it. Each time I drive i open the engine and there is oil everywhere. Does the fuel pump have a release valve or something that could be spewing oil out?
@SteveDentonClassics3 жыл бұрын
If your Triumph Spitfire fuel pump is leaking oil, it possible it could be a failed mounting gasket, or maybe a cracked fuel pump. But without seeing your car for myself it would be difficult for me to diagnose. New fuel pumps are so cheap, and so are the fuel pump mounting gaskets, it would be worth trying a new gasket first then seeing how you get on from there 👍

Leaking fuel has probably killed more classics than any other cause - other than perhaps the loose nut behind the wheel :-). Short but sweet Steve.
@SteveDentonClassics3 жыл бұрын
So true, it wasn't too bad while driving as it was leaking from the suction side of the pump, but when I left it over night, it leaked, and the smell was awful. Well due a new fuel pump 👍

When I had my mk4 spit, I had to buy three pumps before I found one to fit, the problem is the angle of the lever arm that locates on the cam, it was hard to find one with the right angle, many "new" ones have the wrong angle.

Yeah, I got burn't by that problem with my Dolomite, and now I check them every time I replace one against the one I remove 👍

Steve, not sure if you are aware, or is relevant to this, but Loctite (blue) is only activated by ferrous (?) metal. It will not set up in aluminum (aluminium?) I believe that there is a Locktite for non-ferrous as well.
