Triumph Stag halfshaft not tourqued correctly! S1 : Ep 06

I am now aware of three Stags who have had a rear wheel sheer off after having a halfshaft replaced....... and then I find my own replacement halfshaft isn't tourqued correctly either!

Not using a suitable torque wrench will lead to overtightening or under-tightening. The former can lead to the nut loosening, the latter will over-stress the metal leading to catastrophic failure which can result in a wheel coming off.

Yep good point , it's common on a lot of drive shaft nuts , should be checked after 500 miles or so , maybe down to heat expansion and cooling thanks for the tip !

if the torque wrench you used was maxed out at 100 but your nut was already torqued correctly to 120 the wrench you used will click at 100, so I don't think you've proven anything here, apart from possibly overtightening the nut by 1/4 of a turn.

Correct - but what I did do (and should have filmed it) was compared the tightness on the nut on the other side (origional half shaft). And here there was no way I could tighten any further with the standard wrench I was using.......... so to my mind the nearside was clearly not as tight.

Yeah, I’m with the consensus , you need to use a torque wrench well in range of the spec, not at the limit.

Eh! You’ve shown nothing other than over stressing the nut. Have you checked the end float in the hub bearing first?

I think Adam has a point, you need a better torque wrench. I would check it again. Bob
