The fact that there are so many Stags on the road today is a testament to the fact that the engines aren't inherently bad. Require a little extra care and attention? Yes. But not bad. My only gripe is the gearing being too short at motorway speeds.

I owned a Stag for four years and once I got rid of the very poorly looked after engine and rebuilt it, it was pure magic. It never once let me down and I would own another in a heartbeat!!!

The overheating problem was down to the diameter of the radiator pipe. It was just a matter of replacing this for a wider pipe, and the overheating problems ceased.

The usual drivel from these TV "experts" - Stags are notorious for rusting - every car from back then rusted big style if you let them and most people did as they never bothered cleaning out under the wheelarches subframes or kept the underseal under the car maintained or bothered with waxing the cavities etc - some of us did and didnt have a problem with rust on our cars. Plus the Stag is a very reliable car these days as plenty of people have sorted out the problem with the engine overheating etc.
@MrDodgedollar4 жыл бұрын
William Woods I hand restored a GT6 back in the 80’s pretty much as on this series; I was amazed how poor attention to proper sealants or even a run of MIG weld and of course underseal/ wax oil could have made the car last years! There was definitely no fundamental design flaw - take it from me !

@MrDodgedollar4 жыл бұрын
MegaReddevil71 It was that.. or the garage/dealer/owner topped or filled up the coolant system with plain water leading to electrolyte corrosion and a partial blocked radiator or if that was not to be, the assembly plant at coventry didn’t purge all the air from the system when filling. I am lucky, My 30000 mile Stag got through the quality hurdles in 1971; all original, and I have been out today Sunshine ☀️ 15*c blasting down the motorway/freeway, rag top down 90 mph everything on song ... 🥰 just having to ignore the passing waves horns and stares 😆

Their great cars for all their foibles! Triumphs should have used the Rover V8 from Day One. Aside from company pride, the use of the Rover engine from a warranty point of view etc would have been negligible which plagued the Stag back then, which in turn may have had an influence on its development/longevity in the market due to poor press.

@MrDodgedollar4 жыл бұрын
Messenger Charles The block ( short engine) is one casting... not two bolted together-. The crank is common; The heads- (well one side, are handed), are common. Clarksons is mostly comedian and he was joking around. Having common parts to a new family of engines was engineering and commercially sound thinking
@marknelson59294 жыл бұрын
Quite correct in what you say in 'sound thinking' but the execution at the end of the day was appalling re the design of what should have been Triumphs 'premium' engine the V8. It killed the Stag commercially and any chance of a future. Don't et me wrong I love Triumphs, I've had several both 2000 Mk.1 saloons and GT6's.

unfortunately says everything about this ridiculous 'show' - all about hyping facts and personalities and to hell with the important subject matter - the paint rubbing was a bit like Clarkson deliberately 'dissing' Elon with his Tesla 'track test' Clarky had pre written the show to pick up cheap points by binning EVs range capability and dramatising it for laughs - again, to hell with the facts ...which needless to say miffed Elon a Tad (as intended..as Clarky is a bully) - to hell with the expensive paint job - rubbing it like a buffoon for cheap 'laughs' - can you imagine what the engine rebuild and body repairs were like if this pair was involved... - Glennister was great in Life on Mars though :)

If you want detailed restoration, there is plenty to choose from on KZbin. This is a TV show that has to sell advertising and appeal to the masses. Ed China and Wheelers Dealers was the only close and that still cheated.

Recovery driver draping the jump leads over the paintwork ,,,,,,,,,,, take his head off (',') just another car to him, Just like the Hillman Imp they suffered over-heating due to lack of routine cooling system maintenance, i.e poor quality anti-freeze or no antifreeze, hard water leading to scaled/furred radiator tubes equals radiator inefficiency equals over-heating, these cars didnt leave the factory/production line over-heating and there's the clue, bad owners and inept mechanics are to blame and yes I have owned both cars mentioned and I am on the tools for my living its not rocket science
@stewartw.91514 жыл бұрын
So Leyland knew that "for the US market it needed a big V8 engine". Then they installed a small V8 engine. Yes, I can see the logic there! As for the overheating being attributed to the "pressures" that BL workers were under, sorry, no! I am old enough to have been around and driving many cars at the time of the 1960s and 1970s etc. Being a motor mech and an enthusiast I knew what was going on unlike these presenters who are not old enough to have first-hand experience. That was the time of the huge labour union attempts to sabotage the economy of Britain and they actually succeeded! It was back then a known fact that there was a lot of deliberate sabotage by union members in many factories, and BL was also a major target for the "wreckers"
