Hi Del 'n' Pen, Those skills are getting lost among the new age mechanics. "Just buy" one they say. I was told to use Cornflake box card as it's grease proofed but I found that if I used Weetabix card my wee Suzuki TS 185 gained a couple of HP ;) 10hp if I used the centre fold of a dirty mag.

Something I learnt doing my apprenticeship 60 years ago that may help some people:- --- When making gaskets this way have a selection of ball bearings at hand and put one larger than the hole into the depression where the holes are to be then tap the bearing with a hammer (small one) to produce a very neat hole with no jagged edges. Cheers !!

Great video as usual Del. I remember when I worked in a foundry in Sheffield , the fitters would make their gaskets in this way too when they were rebuilding gearboxes and the like. To make the holes around the periphery they would use a large ball bearing positioned over the hole and then tapped down to pierce the gasket. keep 'em coming owd son.

Great video that brought back some wonderful memories of creating homemade valve cover gaskets with my late dad for my old ‘66 Chevy Chevelle 327/375, Del. Seems a certain 18 year old would wind the p!SS out of that rebuilt Corvette motor and it would need a valve tap adjustment every other month it seemed. The gaskets were readily available and probably cheap... but my dad the engineer just wanted me to know how to make gaskets I suppose. He taught me how to tighten down the lifters (by ear and holding a screw driver on the tappets) just enough to quiet the tap but not too tight so as to not lose horsepower. Thanks for the memories, Del! Hoping things are ok there- we’re in our first week of a stay at home order. It’s somewhat ok, I’ve got more bathroom remodeling to do! 🙄. Regards to Penny! 🏍👍🏍

Way back in the 80s I bought some spray on gasket remover. As soon as it came out I recognised the smell, Nitromors Paint Stripper ! So I started using the stuff from a can, much cheaper than the spray I'd bought. Worked great for the little bits that resisted scraping. Unfortunately, the latest Nitromors only works, and then barely, if its allowed to soak for several days. I'll be using this method on my K1200r as BMW want about 10 grand for a clutch cover gasket, which is too much !

Any advantage in using blue waterproof grease in s/arm bearing & suspension linkages? It looks like the remnants of old blue grease that oozed out at 1:40. And why ordinary grease not anti-seize copperslip on the chain adjuster screws? After making gaskets I photocopy or trace them ready for next time.

It's a light weight hammer made of mild or softer steel. Probably much softer than the case's steel.

Not at all Steve, Just tap very gently with a tiny toffee hammer mate, give it a try, it takes hardly any impact at all do cut the card board.

Why not buying a new one gasket?

Lol, I think you are missing the point as so many often do. Do you really want to see a ‘simple skills’ video on how to buy one? No, didn’t think so.

@@Hui9697 a new one is about 7 euros, if he can afford new wheels, it shouldn't be a problem...using selfmade gaskets is only a good idea in field conditions. If you get a leakage on that part of the engine, you get the oil exactly in front of the rear wheel...not the best part to safe bucks, in my opinion

@@waldemarb.5136 You’re obviously not too handy with the tools but those of us who are know if we can make a gasket that seals or not. Don’t judge others based or your own inabilities. The cost of the wheels is irrelevant, you could use the cost of the donor bike instead, or the cost of the facility. Maybe just not bother with the whole project and filming if you think making a gasket is pointless. Like I said, you are missing the point and your ‘safety’ argument doesn’t hold, eh, oil.

@@waldemarb.5136 Sounds like what I do only the jet engines drive pumps and generators. I know I can and do make a good gasket. But, just because you work on bikes, cars and jets doesn’t mean you do it well as some of the people I’ve worked with have proved many times. If you get nervous about making a gasket for a low pressure system next to a wheel then how are you going to get on with a fuel gas raised joint?
