Same way I clamber onto mine being a 5'7" shortarse. Regarding the centre stand - I think these were made primarily for the XC models being slightly longer legged. I have the same problem with mine (a 2011 XR), seems like Triumph couldn't be bothered to make the correct size for our bikes. I will probably give your mod a try.
