As a former child of the recent area, I think the unboxing motif of recent toys are because they way children find toys they want is mostly videos they watch that are unboxing videos. So the more complex the toy the more content they can make of it and the more children watch it and then want it. This has been my Ted Talk.

When i was young in the 90s my family was poor , so i was not expecting it when i got a barbie horse trailer , i was so excited!. It took hours to put together, so many parts! But i loved that thing so much, its fold up picnic table with the plates and cutlery inside, the way the horse moved up n down as it drove along... best Christmas ever!! And making it is one of my happiest memories. And yeah, it was cardboard and twist ties back in those days, not as much plastic packaging from my memory, but it was a while ago...
