This was such a wonderful conversation. Courtney is so well spoken and eloquently talks about complex topics like the drag backlash and trans panic with such compassion and care. She’s a great spokesperson because she’s actually been on these news shows with the goal of educating the public with a queer perspective. It was also great to hear Katya speak more in-depth on these issues and finish her thoughts uninterrupted. Just a really great back and forth between these two. I’m looking forward to continuing the rest of the conversation next week!

@@ellellios well you look back on episodes like 'walking dead hotness' it was 40 minutes and half of it was ad reads. Courtney articulated what I’ve been thinking recently about the ‘drag queens are groomers’ discourse in Australia ‘being spoken with an American accent’. I’ve always been proud of the fact that we’re a comparatively accepting and safe country for queer people, but I’ve definitely noticed a small minority starting to parrot uneducated rhetoric they’ve picked up from American media. Overall though, as Katya said, we’re pretty gay and I don’t see that changing anytime soon.

Agree. It's augmented by media too. The conversations on TV vs Facebook vs Real Life are all very different, with different degrees of "American accent". I have to remind myself that Sky News or FB comments are probably the "worst" examples, and not representative of most people who think differently to me.

This was amazing. I can't wait for part 2.😍 Btw Courtney mentioned sth about "picking berries with cave women" that I have a fun fact about. It recently has been proven that "men were hunters, women were gatherers" is a total myth and all the evidence says that everyone back in prehistoric times had to both hunt and gather. Also it is said that the best hunters of every tribe were old and experienced women. I've heard that it is not even new to discover evidence of lots of hunter women and the evidence has always been there but science chose to theorize things in a way that felt more "natural" to them and their belief system.

Such a brilliant and essential conversation! There is something so powerful about queer, iconic members of the drag community breaking down the challenges of the social strata. Makes me feel immensely safe in a way that’s difficult to articulate. Hopeful - perhaps the word I’m looking for is hopeful. Oooo there ain’t no other way! 🥰❤️
