As someone with extensive religious trauma, I actually found a lot of comfort in drag queens, and the art of drag in general. The idea that someone was out there who could make a complete farce all while looking stunning, and lip-synching to some of my favourite songs. It was so comforting and got me through tough times, where, conveniently enough my religious trauma over took my life.

My wife and I are Christian individuals and plan to have kids. We don’t attend church because it’s such a toxic environment. The percentage of girls who grew up in church being sexually assaulted by church staff or volunteers is heartbreaking. I really do believe drag would be safer for kids than church.

i think the safety of a church depends a lot on what neighborhood you live in. I live in a very secular, progressive, "university city" - if my church tried to pull anything icky on us (including homophobia or transphobia), they will get called out on it IMMEDIATELY. The power imbalance required for abuse to go unpunished is a lot harder to establish in a world where you are surrounded by nuanced messaging emphasizing the importance of consent and accountability. I hope you and your wife find a non-toxic church to attend if that is still something you wish for yourself and your family - church has been my safe space, when having to heal from family abuse trauma, and I wish that everyone had supports like that in their lives. I should imagine they've been taught that it's shameful. Ok i think I have to write this down. I live in Greece. As a child in the 2000s (now aged 29) I took part in a amateur theatrical team that was organised and instructed by an actor who would occasionally do drag as part of his plays and was openly gay. He (preferred pronoun) would write amazing comedies, direct them and play in them and he managed two teams: an adult one and a underaged one. Kids would not see those plays where the jokes would turn a little adult alike. When we saw him doing drag it was an art form to us. We didnt think much of it. I also grew to not think much of someone being gay. To me being straight or gay was like someone being born with brown or red hair. No one was made to feel uncomfortable and no one had bad memories of it. Did we turn to sassy bitches ? We did. But that was all 💅. Imagine like almost 20 years back . People still love him and go to his plays. He taught me a lot about theater and I love him. This is a message to everyone out there that thinks that a kid would get hurt or something. We are all fine and thriving. Him being his authentic self taught me to be unapologetic about my personality.

as someone who grew up in an EXTREMELY religious household i can happily say that i have never felt insulted or confused or had suicidal thought because of beautiful drag queens. i cant say the same for religion. in fact, drag queens encourage me to be more feminine, and isnt that what girl defined wants???
