I bought a guitar at this auction and it now proudly hangs in the rock & roll hall of fame. It was a Electra that had notes from Les in the body. He had refretted, and hand wound the pickups. Tom his luthier confirmed it was a recording guitar in the 70's. We had it appraised by the late from Jay from Mandolin Brothers.

Great episode!! I built at least a couple of those. The Spotlight (83 210), and the Standard Special (Candy Apple Red). I also have a photo of his "favorite", made when he brought it to the plant for a clean-up/set-up job. RL

Great episode - and the next two are gonna be bangers, for sure! Love the heavily played LP Recording. I had a '73 that is still an all-time favorite; it has a story... Helped a friend acquire the guitar in '91, then he sold it to me in '92, I played it a bunch and had it refretted and gone-thru in '94', traded it back to him in '95; he kept it till the late 2000's when I helped him sell it to a well known Chicago shop. They didn't really want to buy bc they already had one that was nicer, but added it to their inventor anyway. Turns out -he recently heard the guitar was still at or had returned to the same shop- and was able to purchase it for the third time! What a great guitar IMHO

I remember that Les Paul Recording prototype from when I saw Les at Fat Tuesday's in the early-mid 90s. I saw him three times, and I'm 99% sure he was playing that exclusively each time. The sound from the pickups was incredibly clear and pristine, as close as possible to the sound of his recordings. I'd go so far as to say that they were almost too clear for anyone not named Les Paul -- but he made them sound great. He was great, too -- warm, funny, and very approachable. He was like everybody's favorite grandfather, who just happened to be a guitar virtuoso and mechanical genius.

If it wasn't the first one then it may have been the second. The one I liked best was his The Paul. Within beautiful top and that rose wood on the headstock. And for once the interior lining of the case seemed to match it well.

Austin, I can't imagine the work it takes to make a video of this magnitude! Congrats!...I say you are correct in stating that the Les Paul Recording Prototype at 18:25 was made in the 80's. On the FB page 'Gibson Les Paul' on July 21, 2023, there was a pic of this same guitar and a quote from Jason Hogan from the museum's website where this was displayed. Jason was quoted saying "This was built for Les in 1982 and became the instrument he used most often during the second half of his career. He famously played it in weekly performances at Fat Tuesday's and the Iridium in New York City that continued until weeks before his death in 2009".

Hey Austin, you were correct the LP Recording Prototype was not a late sixties model it was made in 1982. It was gifted to the Met Museum in NYC. I won't cut and paste it all here. I attempted to add the link but KZbin must not like that so... look up LP Prototype at met museum. Nice gift indeed! The real prototype of LPR was sold at this auction. It and it's bass mate didn't look much like a traditional LP either, but had Les' favorite Low Impedance pickups and electronics though.

I met Les Paul only about a year before he passed. He signed a few things for me, and was super funny as well. Honored that I was able to meet him. The Les Paul is definitely my favorite guitar of all time, having owned several early original 1950's Goldtops and countless reissues.

Nice! I was thinking of doing a similar quick vid on my channel. I have a PRS Custom 22 Piezo that I rewired for individual coil split, and there are days I prefer the split humbuckers to my Strat. Here's a trick for you with PRSs: the way the treble bleed is wired in, your tone changes across the volume range. I like to use the neck pickup in coil split mode with guitar volume down to 6.5, and making up for the volume difference with clean boost.

There's so much here to like it makes it hard to pick a favorite but the 25/50 is definitely one of my favorites. Doing a series on Les Paul was a great idea. It's a good way to inform all of us about the man. Oh, I believe the Bloomberg in question was Mike Bloomberg the guitarist and NOT the mayor of NYC.

Austin, in 1976, I visited Les at his home in Mahwah, NJ and had the pleasure of interviewing him. Les and I posed for a picture of the two of us, and I'm holding the first guitar you showed, The Les Paul model. At the time, it was the fanciest and most expensive Les Paul you could buy.

You should considered doing Les's other non-gibson guitars...think its interesting he kept a 1951 no-caster...picture of him with the tele are interesting - looks happy lol...bet there is a story there...also he kept some kramers, fender strats/teles, and etc...doesn't seem like there are any utube videos of him playing these, likely for legal/agreement reasons with Gibson, but we know he sold guitar during his lifetime that I assume he didn't favor, so why did he keep these until the end...?
