Gasp! Maybe you should tell the IRS. Oh, wait, maybe they know more than you. Stop spreading misinformation. Goodwill has been criticised for overpaying its execs and underpaying its low-level workers, but the organisation makes no profit, giving the vast majority (almost 90%) of its revenue to charitable service and the balance paying its staff. The only criticism could be that it's a bit circular in its use of the resources. i.e. that the donations are put to use training people which largely help goodwill get more donations. Even if that was true, it is still helping to employ a lot of people who would otherwise struggle.

I'm quite surprised with the 120 being a low budget student model and not only having a arch top but back in addition. I also noticed something besides the blemish on the neck the tuners look rusted for something that has been in a gig bag. The SG must've been in the era when everyone and their brother were doing knockoffs that were almost exactly like the real thing. Except for the few things you pointed out it looks like the real seal. My brother picked up an electra while in the air force that was like a LP standard . It had more of a headstock like a Gibson. And some decent covered pickups. He replaced those with some Dimarzios and gave me the pickups which I installed in a Global SG knockoff. Those pickups made a difference in the sound of that cheap guitar fir the better. The old ones I could've used as microphones. I'm not personally familiar with a Seville but a friend had an arch top that was an awesome guitar.

Man I’d love for you to do more PRS guitars. There are some interesting early years models that I know you’d fall in love with. I know you did a few (hollow body McCarty and a SilverSky) but I think if you got into the skunkworks of PRS like their private stocks and saw one in person you’d be blown away. That 10 top McCarty you had on a while ago was beautiful but a one of kind private stock just has a layer of special that I haven’t seen yet from brands. I do want to thank you for getting me interested back into Gibson. I was burned on a few models before switching to PRS way back in 2010 and seeing some of the beauties of the late 70s and early 90s custom shop stuff you’ve shown makes me want to buy one soon.

I also agree about the Private Stock stuff. I own one and it's just amazing. Every time I play it, I can tell it was made by people who know what the hell they are doing, and actually care about what they are doing. I will say though, I've played quite a few of their US made Core models including Custom 24s, a DGT, a Tremonti... All of them were fantastic. The Private stock just allows you to have more control over what you really want and to have something much more unique.
@hkguitar19842 жыл бұрын
@@JunkfoodZombieGuns Yeah, I dream about some of those PRS guitars, they are unlike any other guitar made (IMHO). I've a custom ordered Les Paul Custom as well as a CS Quilt Top Stratocaster, and I was as happy as could be until I played my friends DGT. Where as Gibson and Fender follow their tradition (which is a cool and good thing) the PRS are an entirely different level of build and purpose. Very cool that you have a Private Stock and I agree about the Core models. I've decided to save up for a Vela solely because of their Dynasonic style neck pickups. Paul Reed Smith the man is to guitars what Henry Ford was to the automobile. I'd own a PRS if I could stop myself from buying Les Paul and Telecaster guitars!

I just bought a guitar off of Goodwill online. It was a Lyon by Washburn strat. I paid $15 for it with $25 shipping - total $40. I got the guitar in about 5 days. It was packed very well and the bidding/buying process was pretty seamless. It came as described - I didnt like it (and somehow I knew I wouldnt) just for what it was not having anything to do with GW so I sold it. I would note though that the bid prices seem kind of high for what is being sold on their site - strangely high. I am not sure if there is any funny business going on or if people are running up bids and not buying, but I have seen guitars get bid up over their new retail prices or well above comparable Reverb sold listings which doesnt make any sense to me. I dont know but buyer beware. Thanks for the vid Trogo!

Ever since I was 25 and watched an episode from the first season of Highway to Heaven titled "Song of the Wild West", I've been curious about 70s era Gibson Hummingbirds. One of the main guest characters is seen miming on one (who can confirm if she's doing her own playing?), and that's partly why the Hummingbird is the only Gibson acoustic model I've ever lusted after. Another reason is that Jim McGuinn briefly had himself a 12-string version of the Hummingbird before the foundation of the Byrds.

That SG with the vibrola might be real. The missing binding along with the flat ends of the frets means this neck had binding at one time. Great video Trogster!

no chance the SG is real...I notified Goodwill New Mexico days in advance of the auction close and they did nothing to modify the listing or stop the auction. Somebody paid $4201.00 for this FAKE. Here's some of my messages to GW: Wrong tuning pegs, no serial number on back of headstock, no beveled edges on the back of the body, wrong pickup mounting, wrong pickguard, wrong neck joint to body, wrong fingerboard wood. Guitar is a poor quality copy., Auction of the guitar must be stopped. Listing misrepresents guitar as genuine Gibson product. It is a Fake copy. Auction was not stopped after multiple messages that the guitar was a fake. The Fake Gibson guitar was sold anyway for over $4000 ! This is fraud and has been reported to Gibson.

Hey trogly, the problem with these Original Grain watches is they're inexpensive Chinese made watches commonly found unbranded on site like wish and aliexpress, they're bought in bulk, a logos slapped on them and they're sold as high-end, "low cost" time pieces for $300, an insane mark up for the $5 they are made for. They are similar to MVMT watches in that regard, I wouldn't recommend partnering with such a company again, I don't know how they tricked Taylor Guitars into partnering with them, but these pop-up "luxury" watch companies are a huge problem in watch communities because their aggressive advertising and youtube partnerships end up tricking people that are unfamiliar with watches into spending a lot of money on a cheap product. Like someone shaving down the headstock on an epiphone and selling it to someone for $900 as a gibson.
@hkguitar19842 жыл бұрын
Agreed, it must have been a Taylor's Marketing Dept. decision...........I agree with you in that these watches do not reflect the quality image Taylor projects. These watches use the Miyota 6S21 Movement, it is indeed a standard quartz watch movement from China (as you've stated), your estimate of the wholesale cost would also seem to be accurate. I've dabbled in Horology for decades now from the years I worked as an instrument technician rebuilding timepieces. A quality Swiss or even Japanese Movement can last a lifetime with regular maintenance. These are not that. It would seem the majority of the cost is for the unique Taylor styling and adornments.
@saltpeter74292 жыл бұрын
Wow. Holy s%$t. I am shocked that this play went into action, I figured Trog's would have his sponsor's vetted. I know nothing about the quality of watches, I have a nice ( to me) citizens watch that I recieved as best man at my buddy's wedding. I like it. Thanks for this comment and all because I was taken in with the nice looking Taylor logo and such, I would have never known better.
@hkguitar19842 жыл бұрын
@@saltpeter7429 To be honest, I'd say it isn't uncommon for watches to use the less expensive Chinese (Miyota) movements. So to be clear, this sponsor isn't the exception but more the norm. And even with a Rolex watch most of the cost is the result of the case and dial. These Original Grain watches are very much the same, most of the cost is due to the case, dial and bracelet. On my wrist right now I've a Chase Durer Special Forces 1000 XL, my wife paid close to $1500 for it back in the late 1990s. The ETA 251.262 quartz chronograph movement that makes up the workings of this watch cost less than $200 when brand new. Its the fancy case and dial that make up the majority of a watch's price.
@hkguitar19842 жыл бұрын
I took a closer look at the Original Grain watch page. Considering the Taylor branding and how handsome they are I don't think they are overpriced. If I owned a Taylor acoustic I'd get the matching watch for sure. Plus, they have abalone (my weakness). You just have to be realistic about your expectations.

LOL, yeah, he also reviewed the Electra with all the effects modules. Back in the late '70s a friend had an Electra Les Paul Custom that from 10' away looked like the real thing.

The guy that sold Trogly the plywood guitar and misrepresented it has his own little KZbin channel. I won't put him on blast here but if you do a little digging you could probably find it.

@@ernestschultz5065 Oh gosh Ernest, give me a clue, please. I'd love to check him out! I'll go back and re-watch that episode of Trogly's, maybe I'll pick up a clue or two!

I got so excited when you came upon the Electra. I recently picked up an X-280 Working Man in a pawn shop for a great price. It looked just like that X-270.

Congrats I remember when the Elctra guitars were just coming out, a friend in High School had one back in the late '70s, it looked and played pretty great.

Goodwill had a beat up toy acoustic that I drove over two hours to go to the Odeum Expo Center which was cancelled. So I stopped at a Goodwill right near there and this toy, no name, no truss rod and unplayable, yet they were asking $99 dollars for. It wasn’t worth $5 dollars...literally. When I explained to the women behind the counter, I was looking for one of my sons adopted special needs child. I’m extremely glad I’m 58 and have been playing since I was 7 collecting for the last 15 years. Someone else would have been burned. This is something that this little guy loves. Guitars. But he’s a bull in a China shop with his gear. Just buyer beware!

I bought a fake Gibson(pre-Chibson) unknowingly back in the late 80's and it turned out to be one of my all time favorite guitars. Even came with a G string that wouldn't stay in tune. I regret getting rid of it now. I believe it was possibly a Baldwin Music LP with a Gibson headstock veneer glued on. Hard to tell. I still have the double cream humbuckers and hardware that came out of it.

I don't know how they couldn't see that the guitar was a fake 😂

I couldn't care less if it's charity, if I by some chance ended up buying a fake without initially knowing, I would return it in a heartbeat, if anything, it's illegal for them to sell it, so they are the ones getting the long nose.
