After several years of learning guitar on my dads guitar i got a job and saved up to buy an American standard telecaster, candy apple red/white gard maple neck/fretboard ...i was 16 and that was in '98 ...20 years later and i still got the thing, lol! Nice story Trogg, i love hearing other people's first guitar stories, thank you for this video!!

@@Trog changing pickups requires basically no skill. Just some practice, which can be done and re-done on this exact guitar, because bad soldering can be re-soldered as much as you want. If you want to scallop fretboard or to change tremolo for modern 2-point, that would be another story...

I started out on my dad's extremely cheap acoustic. The action on that thing was about half a foot (You couldn't play above the 12the fret) and the string tension was equally high. When my parents saw I was getting more serious they got me 80€ Strat copy and a tiny 10W practice amp. Then I bought a semi-hollowbody of the same brand and a Fender Mustang amp (both used) a few years later. Still havent paid more than 100€ for any piece of gear.

WHAT? You had one of those too? Somebody else finally has one! And I’m so happy that you love it aswell! It’s really a great machine, and yes, for $200. I got the same one, except I think it’s a bit more modern...with a sunburst, a slightly smaller logo, an extra string tree, and 22 frets. Got mine from a local guitar shop too, and I just restrung it today. First time that this decade-old thing got restrung in 8 years! God, it’s so sentimental to me, and I still love playing to this day. The only thing, I don’t know where the vibrato arm went, if I ever got one with it, don’t remember seeing it :/

It is just weird how you ended up as Gibson guy, while you started on Strat clone and showed your best skill ever on this exact guitar. I say that because I started on cheap Schecter superstrat, which actually had Gibson-style layout with archtop and angled neck joint. Later I got good MIM Strat, modified to resemble David Gilmour's blackie, and while I like how it feels and sounds, there is no doubt that I gain +15% or more speed and precision when I play my LP Standard. There is no doubt that I am LP guy. But I really think, that you, as a player, must be Strat guy. Not telling that you should move to trade Fenders or anything like that, just sharing my weird observation. Maybe that is the reason why you like those 80s quirky Gibson models and The Paul, which is too thin, flat and uncomfortable for me xD

Nahh, I think the playing difference you are picking up on is Austin has been hanging around a couple of guys who play like this. I don't recall their names but it's the two guys that live nearby Austin and do demo's once in awhile. If you listen to their playing styles and then compare what Austin did in this video you will see what I mean.

My first guitar was also a Strat clone, a Jaxville Custom Series 2 "Zeus". A black body and neck, painted headstock, black pickguard, and a sweet lightning bolt on it. It's not functional right now (needs a new nut, tuners and bridge). First song I learned (all the way through, everyone seems to learn Smoke on the Water's riff) was God Save The Queen.

That was cool, it sounds like it may have slightly different pickups then it's current equivalent. Now they measure 2.5K each, pretty weak but Fender isn't known for power anyway so kind of works. Would like to know what those are and about what year it was made? Thanks

Cool to see another Excel somewhere! My first guitar was also an Excel strat copy and it looks pretty identical except mine was black with a white pickguard. Same headstock cut, humbucker-sized bridge pickup hole and the pickguard also turned yellow during the years :D I bought it from a sort of similar sounding small music store in a small town in central Finland, maybe around - 00 or -01. It came with a small Kustom practice amp and a cheap bag. (the amp is actually still in use, the clean channel sounds horrible but it's really great for dirty and raw overdriven blues) Mine was in a really bad condition though when I found it again after a long time, stored in my mothers basement. The action has always been pretty high, the neck was warped, the bridge pretty rusty and the plastic nut broken. I'm now trying to fix the whole thing. The paint had also suffered so I decided to sand it away completely, the underlying material was partly some lightweight wood and partly some greyish pressed wood that smells horrible :D But the neck is actually really beautiful, just like yours

The first Fender Guitars were made of Pine Wood Scrap and homemade pickups screwed directly into the body. The point is does your guitar make you want to pick it up, hold it and make you want to play....if it does than it is as good as any other guitar ?

Plus the pickups were one of the most awful sets I've ever herd. It was so bad I almost quit. Luckily I was able to save up enough to buy a MIM tele and I've been a tele fanatic ever since. I'm just glad todays players have so many good options for a solid starter guitar. There weren't quite as many options when I started.
