There's a local shop to me which is full of Chibsons. "Brand new" SGs for £425...Les Pauls...lots of dodgy priced "Fenders" as well. No idea how the local Trading Standards office haven't shut them down.

Right , & the folks that buy a Chib-Son say they’re just as good for the 1/4 of the price haven’t played a real Gibson les Paul for the most part. Some saying Gibson are shit then wanting a fake one with the Gibson badge are the most insane of the buyers.

Check the cavity routes...if they're clean and smooth then it's a Chibson. Gibson has terrible QC and rarely sharpens their bits.

I've noticed the majority of Chibsons use that 2006 serial format, LOADS start 01716xxx, and I've seen 01714xxx, too. I wonder if that's an identifier for the factory that they always use 0171?. I'd be terrified if I ever found an actual Gibson made on that day!

Just a curious observation on that 355 Cobra burst. You said most of them come with Chrome hardware and that one has all gold hardware but the studs that are in the body are Chrome. I wonder if they switched all the hardware on it and still claiming it's new.

Another giveaway on these chibsons (and epiphones actually) is that they never scrape the top edge of the binding on the body, they only mask the sides. So the finish goes right up to the edge and if you’re looking at the guitar straight on, you don’t really see the outline of the binding like on a Gibson.

That is one amazing Chibson! Shame that its definitely set up for a scam! Is likely a decent guitar! I saw a Dave Grohl Chibson that is so convincing that, unless you really look, you could not tell the difference. The only really noticable difference is that the F holes are slightly longer than the Gibson! Other than that its a real ringer for the Gibson!

China Guitar Skeptic "Mike", who built his channel a decade ago reviewing/debunking Chibsons he bought with his own money, died a year ago so this is a fitting commemoration. There's an anniversary memorial on CGS2 channel for folks that watched him.

I have that exact 94’ explorer! It’s satin, but probably buffed into gloss, it’s hard to put down, Dow they will all be glossy by now!!

It is very likely that Chibson has a 1-Piece body, I've seen more than a handful over the years. IMO, with the Gibson hardware and electronics its probably nicer than most Epiphones, deceiving and asking more than $600 is criminal.

I have a twin of that Explorer Custom Shop Edition. I bought it new back in 1994. It is a satin finish and glosses up in the playing areas. I couldn't stomach the white pick guard so I have a black one on mine, although I still have the original in the case.

I actually collect these chibson's. The quality of the bodies and neck and inlays is very good quality the shortfall is the tuners and electronics, but you get a mahogany body and one piece mahogany neck and either rosewood or ebony fretboard, usually jumbo stainless frets and bone nut. But it pisses me off people trying to scam someone. It hurts all of us when people do this

On the Chibsons look at the Phillips screws. They always look subpar. Almost like they were made pre-stripped before being plated. Beautiful SG Elegant!

Taking a look at it, believing but that was some antique green/white thing and then looking at the neck itself but is that some kind of metallic.. I know it was that song node woodgrain exposure thing it was. grain hole thing. n then the neck it pianoed again

The fastest way to find out if it’s a Chibson is look at the truss rod. Chibson won’t have the nut Gibson style, they all have the Allen style rod.

This was on Marketplace! I don’t live that far from where it’s located and I saw it while I was looking around!! I swear, when I saw it I honestly thought it looked off. Especially the serial # look. I’m more in to Fenders and I can spot those fakes pretty quickly but I gotta give Trogly the credit for teaching me what real Gibsons look like!

No fret nibs. Of course it's possible an authentic Gibson LP could get refretted, removing the nibs, but unless they are stating that's the case, I assume no nibs = no Gibson.

That being said the frets where nicely done semi hemispherical style, just that some frets were too short 😂 so I'm guessing they went too crazy on the rounded fret ends 😂

Things to look for: -serial number -3 piece headstock (wings) -take off the nut cover, shouldn't be an allen wrench. (should msg seller to post pictures abt that) -bridge pins vs flathead

Imagine someone buying that for their first Gibson and finding out its fake. That would leave a bad taste in your mouth with Gibson guitars. It's already hard enough to fork over a small fortune to have one. Gibson having some absolute fails in their arsenal when it comes to production quality certainly makes a Chibson more difficult to spot.... Seen other sources that have confirmed that the Chibson they had was better set up and better finished than the Gibson - take from that what you will.

I’m gonna say it again. Every time a chibson goes through your hands you guys need to scratch “copy“ or “replica“ something to denote it into the finish so that somebody has to go through even more work if they’re gonna try to dupe someone. Every chips in the comes in my hands leaves my possession ( if it ever does leave my possession) has copy or something like that scratched into the finish behind the headstock. And I did that, and I do that, because one left my possession and somebody did exactly this. They put Gibson part in it, and somebody ended up buying it for like 2-3000 bucks.

You can see immediately that the angle on that tailpiece isn't right. I'm no expert but I'd worked it out within a minute. I'm shocked if you fell for it. Edit 2. Still within a minute, that headstock is all sorts of wrong. I'm guessing you KNEW this was a fake and bought it for content. Edit 3. The fretwork looks "NICE!? They're not even all the same length! Some aren't even close to the fingerboard edges and have no edging. No way you ever thought this was original!
