Trolling for Redfin at Waranga Basin

It's not very often the conditions are this calm over at Waranga Basin, so I took the opportunity to drive over with my kayak and troll around in search of some redfin to take home for a feed. After a slow start I finally managed to hook into a fish while trolling a size 3 stump jumper, even though I didn't know it until I wound in the line! As the sun began it's descent I changed over to a smaller lure and trolled around in the shallows and finally found a school of redfin that was willing to play. Even though I didn't catch any keepers, I had tons of fun paddling around and hooking into some small redfin.
▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
I watched this Trellys video prior to hitting the lake, this is where I got the tip to use a dropper loop and a stinger - • Fishing for Redfin in ...
▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
Jigglefishing plastics and jigheads can be purchased from their online store, here: jigglefishing.com.au?aff=9

Love the Stumpjumper. Have you tried the new cup face bib yet? I haven't but it looks the job. I think I have probably caught more fish in stumpjumpers, and lost more stumpjumpers, than any other lure. Testament to how much I throw them, I guess.
@RKJFishing
@RKJFishing 3 жыл бұрын
No mate I haven't seen their new bibs? The last one I saw them release was the surface lure one - or is that what you're talking about? I've caught plenty of yellas and redfin on stumpys but never a cod funnily enough! I'll have to change that come summertime hehe
@AndrewFishman
@AndrewFishman 3 жыл бұрын
@@RKJFishing Ah, for cod, try a rip stop pause approach. Good solid rod rip, sudden stop and good length pause. And expect to loose a few in the timber, write them off as you tie them on and throw in tight. Rock faces and mud banks are great places, particularly if you have a deep hole running along the front of an undercut bank. You may have to get your tackle wet to get good parallel casts, but try and hold as tight into the undercut as you can get. Particularly popular haunts if there are tree roots growing through and hanging down. Because stumpies do take a while to get down, throwing perpendicular to structure and then reeling away from it, means the lure is not at depth until well out of range of the target zone/ Much better to get it into the zone and keep it in the zone by casting along the bank. And when I say, get your tackle wet, I am not talking fishing tackle. It could be a little painful if a fish took the tackle I mentioned... I find this holds true of any floating/diving lure, but stumpies, with the slim profile and narrow bib take more time than many of the rounder plug type lures. An upgrade to a heavier hook can help to improve the sink rate, but don't impede the action by throwing oversized hooks on. You can also get a tail down floater if you increase the read treble weight. This can be really useful as it really changes the possibilities of retrieves. If it is not possible to get a parallel cast along the face, and you want the lure to get down fairly rapidly, tie a swivel or brass ring into the rig, and run a sinker on the mainline, with a couple of foot of leader to the lure. It takes a little practice to cast without getting trembles tangled, but tangles can be mitigated by swapping out trebles for inline singles or keeper hooks. As the sinker sinks, it pulls the lure down behind it, which imparts action to the lure, and keeps it well in to zone for much longer. When pressure is taken from the sinker it allows the natural bouyancy of the lure to lift it, so it is possible to bounce and jiggle it in place quite well. Perfect for log jams and bankside holes. I use the shallow bib when doing this as the deep bib will just dig you into the bottom. Let the weight do the work. Particularly effective in impoundments to get DEEP also. Good luck, and get onto that cod mate. Number 3 Stumpie FTW!

@RKJFishing
@RKJFishing 3 жыл бұрын
Yay well done Roo! What's a koopie doll? lol
@AndrewFishman
@AndrewFishman 3 жыл бұрын
@@RKJFishing it is actually a mis-spelling of Kewpie Doll lol. A little doll that had a big head, big eyes and was a cheap and nasty showground prize back in the day, the dark depths of the last century. It was a common expression around here, "Congratulations, you get 10 points and a Koopie Doll" as a sarcastic rejoinder to stupid comment :) Came from the US expression:- en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kewpie Kewpie is a brand of dolls and figurines that were conceived as comic strip characters by cartoonist Rose O'Neill. The illustrated cartoons, appearing as baby cupid characters, began to gain popularity after the publication of O'Neill's comic strips in 1909, and O'Neill began to illustrate and sell paper doll versions of the Kewpies. The characters were first produced as bisque dolls in Waltershausen, Germany, beginning in 1912, and became extremely popular in the early 20th century.[ To "win a kewpie doll" is a common English idiom in the US, meaning that one has won a modest prize. [being Aussies, we put a bit of our own spin to it ;) and it became a sarcastic rejoinder]
