When searching for lake trout and good structure they are holding on trolling can be one of your best options. Downrigging is one of my favourite ways to map out new areas on Cold Lake to help find new areas and exactly where these fish are holding. In early June this is exactly what we did and were rewarded with some nice lake trout and a great day fishing!

You’re stacking them up looks good. I’ve done lots of downrigging for salmon but tomorrow will only be day two of my lake trout efforts. Got a couple today but nothing legal size yet.

Lake trout is just the fresh water version of salmon without traveling to the west coast for me. Keep at it and you’ll get a few good ones! Best of luck👊

Whats your go to speed for trolling Lakers?
@weaversbentrods
@weaversbentrods 3 жыл бұрын
That’s one thing i’m constantly changing much like my lead length. But i’m almost always between 2-3mph when trolling spoons. A little slower of trolling bait rigs More then likely i’m sitting at the 2-2.3mph mark most often for spoons like in this video

Great videos! I’m new to Mac fishing, just wondering how you decide wether to jig or troll?
@weaversbentrods
@weaversbentrods 2 жыл бұрын
Really just depends on various scenarios for me. Generally I prefer jigging but trolling allows me to cover more water while looking for that special area to jig

I’m going lake trout fishing. I have 15 pound fluorocarbon on my reel. Is that strong enough for lake trout?
@weaversbentrods
@weaversbentrods 2 жыл бұрын
depending on the size of fish in your lake I usually start at 20lb minimum and as high as 80lb depending on the situations and techniques. You could get away with 15 tho but it’s defiantly on the lighter side of things

@@hyenamanlionkiller608 I like to use braid on my jigging rods with a flouro leader. I stick tried mono on my rigger rods this last season and was pretty happy with it as there was a little stretch with the violent strikes that happen trolling

@weaversbentrods

Usually for spoons im looking at about 2mph give or take .5 Sometimes the .5 difference can make or break a day dont be afraid to slow down or speed up if your not getting bites and going over fish!

Hey great video thanks for the info We are probably trying this lake next month can you give me a little info on depths in July do they go deeper Do you usually troll in like under 100 ft , any info would be great we got down riggers as well thank you
@weaversbentrods
@weaversbentrods 2 жыл бұрын
they will probably be a touch deeper but I would just watch your sonar and let them tell you where they are. ya usually we troll anywhere from 60-120ft in july. occasionally we will troll out deep in 120-200ft for suspended fish down 40-70ft

@@weaversbentrods I do have problems with mine but check them often for deterioration and change them as needed. When fishing cold lake I like to bounce bottom and find that will provoke strikes when fish are lazy. The snubbers help this.
