Trolling Lures with Precision: How deep are your lures are getting while striped bass kayak trolling

Two things to remember with these lures. The rated diving depth is for a lure that is CAST. A lure that is trolled will run much, much deeper. And, the lure has no idea where the water surface is. The depth is from the rod tip down, not from the water surface down. So if you alter how high the rodtip is off the water surface, you can alter how deep below the surface the lure runs.

Pretty close! The depth a lure travels is always affected by the same parameters: line diameter (this is the drag), the amount of line out, and the speed the lure is traveling. The lure design then affects maximum depth of travel (bill design, body shape).

@@MDYakFishing Right. Consult the "Precision Trolling Guide" for exact depths. They have tested, via underwater monitoring, just how deep roughly 300 popular lures run at varying distances (with 10 lb test mono). I think they have a phone app for it now. It's accurate.

Great video mate!! I use multi coloured braid so I can consistently let out the same amount of line each time.

Yes, there is a terminal depth for all lures but to get max depth speed, diameter of line and length of line adjust depth.
