I only learned (just a couple years ago!) that on the bass trombone, the positions expand, esp. when using the triggers for the lower notes! The rare times I play the bass trombone, I'll have to learn, and apply the alternate positions. Food for thought (and mainly, APPLICATION).

This, to me, was the most educational trombone lesson. I know about some of the positions; it seems this is more useful when you hit the higher ranges. But the exercises are valuable! Hitting a high "G" (above middle C), I actually play " one and two-thirds" position, approximately, since the partial is not quite as high as Ab on first position. I don't own a trombone, so next time I borrow one, I'll try these out...MORE. Thanks; I'll check out your other videos, too!

@@kraka2oanIner there are many alternate positions that are useful in the middle register as well. F in 6th position and Bb in 5th position are very helpful.

I totally dig using alternate positions. Still working on it, but the idea is a game changer.

It opens up a whole new world as far as technique goes. You can divide the horn in half 1-4 position and 5-7 position. Matching the tone of the note in its original position is the trick.

I’m glad you found the video informative. Alternate positions free up a lot of technical things for us as trombonists.

Hi Dion, I regularly use 4th for my high D (sorry I have to think and transpose from treble clef to concert), 6th for low F and 5th for B flat. These are (for me) the easiest to get in tune, oh and occasionally a short 4th for high F. Love the vids, please keep them coming.

Dion, that’s quite some handy information. I am learning the trombone via the Rubank method, and I see 4th position most commonly used for the D just above the staff, mainly for easily reaching 3rd position for C or Eb. I have found 7th position for E on the third space on the staff when I also need to use standard 6th-position low C. The mention of Eb above high Bb in sharpened 2nd position (I have it about halfway between 1st and 2nd) makes it easy to go to 2nd position for E or 1st for F.

I’m glad you found the information useful. Eb in #2 opens up a lot of options in that octave. I think playing D and F on fourth position are the alternates I use the most. Middle Bb in 5th position is not far behind!

I'm a beginner you have any lesson for people on my level?

Unfortunately I don’t have any true beginner videos on my channel. I have been interested in putting something together.
