It's a big shame they never picked it back up, honestly. I would have liked to see the xenophobia angle studied more, had they had another season or two to continue the story; I could see an actual ISO character being introduced (outside of the ones seen in flashbacks) to perhaps better-show the effects of CLU's reign on their lives, and why it's important to help them too. Plus, Paige would likely have gotten further development and the chance to unlearn the toxic ideologies that led her to work for CLU in the first place; that would probably have made the redemption arc they kept hinting at much more plausible and compelling. Though at the end of the day, this is just my speculation, maybe if it had continued it would have gone in a completely different direction, for better or for worse. Either way, we'll never know for sure :/

Okay after watching the whole video, I agree with this 100%. Especially liked your distinction between different elements of fascism and how Uprising disappoints in the xenophobic areas. I remember being very upset that the two major black characters were killed off and it felt tone-deaf for this particular narrative. They were using black people to up the tragedy of Beck's circumstances without giving them proper arcs or development themselves. At the very least, more major characters should have been POC so this wouldn't have felt so jarring (though it still would have been worth critiquing).

the thing about the show not fully exploring the anti fascist narrative not being fully realized is that it got cancelled. i feel like if Paige had more time to grow as a character the xenophobia would've been addressed definitely considering that the two Iso characters we see should be still alive(well at least Qoura). also paige isn't necessarily choosing to be xenophobic she's basically brain washed by the community she's around (by that i mean is being taught wrong info and is became an officer off of being mislead) and thinks what she's doing is right. that aside great video i really appreciate this. as a 18yld black male i grew up loving this series and your analysis solidified why it resonates. thank you.

I do not think that you really got what the point of paige was, she was still willing to help Tesla and stay on the facist side bacause, the ideology that it formed made her feel secure and wanted, it mirrored the Story line of dyson, in where he felt betrayed by flyn, and then joined clu in his ideological belives because He thought that even if clu was a radical, at least he is able and willing to help. Paiges Story is in a sence the same, she just needs to Look past the vail of her indoctrination, while dyson joined out of Frustration and oppertunism, paige joined out of the believe that only clu's regime was willing to help people like herself. Tron uprising doesn't just try to point a finger and say fashism bad, it wants to tell you not only why it is bad, but also why people join it in the first place and stay there, it tells you how such a rise to Power could even happen, and how you could maybe even get them out of such a dark place and belive.

I would also like to discuss Tron himself. CLU's police state isnt upon virgin soil- many of the sentries and black guards were Tron's men. And the military policies were made in order to keep the Grid alive in stories like TRON Betrayal and TRON Evolution. Granted. Many of the military forces were first proposed by CLU but Tron let them slide and allowed them to fester and flourish. As one of the three founders of the Grid, Tron is as much as fault as CLU and Flynn. ~ I suppose it fits much of reality. A good but flawed idea for a new sovereign state becomes mired in quagmires of moral grayness, their flawed leaders, and ambitions for power. And Tron is trying to do right and rebel against the force he helped make in a sort of unannounced affirmative action.
@adasin33022 жыл бұрын
Some thoughts about Tron: Uprising not being anti-facist enough in the line of fighting xenofobia: - well, I think it's mostly because Beck is a young program and he does not know what exactly happened during ISO wars, it's not his concern at the time of the show's main plot. And at the time, it is believed that all ISOs were wiped out, so there is no need to hunt them down, so military does not need to focus their campaign on that - their main concern at the time is the Renegade. But yeah, you're right, it's just in flashbacks, but I would say it's main topic of the flashbacks. And I also think the xenofobia would be more explored in the second season or the movie that should have been between these seasons (in it's recently leaked script Quorra - an ISO - appears and talks to Beck about wiping out ISOs. Thanks for the video anyway, amazing work! Not so many people realize that Tron: Uprising isn't just a kid's Disney cartoon, but a work with many deep thought that could tell people a lot even without a hectoliters of blood and vulgarisms.

I think something I disagree with the video is that you paint that main characters as "Heroes" because they are rebelling against the "Villians." Realistically, not every decision each character makes is the right decision (A lot of times its the wrong decision). Part of what makes the show great is not necessarily their decisions, but their will. Their will to rebel against a system they choose to change. As well, I think you also glossed over many of the characters who agree with the fascist system they are in. Some call it brainwashing or conformity, but other characters fully acknowledge their actions as the right answer. This argument amongst people, contradicting ideals, and philosophy is kind of why I like the show a lot. Also, Personal Note Separate from the Review: I noticed you glanced over topics like Antifa, the Riots, Black Lives Matter, and Donald Trump. I would have personally liked if you either went deeper in the comparisons, or just not talked about them at all. What little you had just felt poorly done. I also was not a fan that you used America when other countries around the world have it much harder. Calling the United States Fascist is laughable and dumb when Sovereign Territories like Hong Kong are literally losing their democracy. We can at least vote Trump out of Office; Hong Kong is stuck with whatever China tells them without a voice to speak. People in Hong Kong are dying for their freedom.
@Lavapasta4 жыл бұрын
Okay, but isn't the show's narrative already the one painting main characters as the heroes and the antagonists as the villains? Aren't the good guys designed with blue, green, and white colors while the bad guys are designed with orange, yellow, and red colors? and as for the characters who fully agree with fascism, wasn't commander Paige tricked into joining because she was lied to? I don't know if there was much of an argument between characters with differing philosophies- all i remember is Beck and Paige interacting with each other in "Welcome Home" where the two characters both found common ground in their desire to keep people alive and "Rendevous" where they spend more time together and Beck starts to influence one of Paige's decisions, but at the end of the episode she decides to stop hanging out with him because she doesn't want become more merciful at her job, and I feel like the point of the episode was that Paige will still be loyal to fascism even if fascism throws her under the bus. There are other narratives that deal with complex issues where there is no right answer, but I don't think TRON: Uprising was trying to say that 'there were valid arguments on 'both sides' of the conflict, it was saying that one side (the villains) was more wrong than the other- it showed us both sides, but because of that, we can see that one side is built on lies and suffering. As for the current events, I think by saying "Black lives deserve to be treated with dignity" i was getting the same message across as if I had said "Black Lives Matter" (a movement that I agree with because Black people matter), Antifa is just an abbreviation of the word 'antifascism' which means that they're not an organization, they're just people with matching viewpoints, and the 45th President of the United States' decision to label "antifa" (aka people who do not like fascism) as a terrorist organization is pretty similar to how the villains of TRON: Uprising have labeled the renegade as a terrorist. I agree that Hong Kong and other countries have it worse than in the U.S., but there are other countries in the world that have it better than the U.S., too, and I don't think it's so "laughable" to compare the United States to fascism when it has a cult of tradition, an eternal period of wartime (esp with the middle east conflicts), anti-intellectualism, as well as a history of xenophobia and racism that is still present to this day. Given how the country practically worships policemen and will often let them get away with anything without consequences, and how when Americans ask that cops to be held accountable, cops respond by beating them into submission, it very much feels like the country is a police state. People in Hong Kong are dying for their freedom, yes, but people in the United States of America are also being killed with impunity -being denied their dignity as human beings- and that deserves to be spoken out against, too.
@Kuristofa994 жыл бұрын
@The Devastator Keep Politics Out of Tron? Tron was always about Politics; even the first one. If anything, politics are why I like Tron. Paige knew what life she had even after she found out that she was lied to. Once she saw what was really going on, it shook her up a bit, but when she considered the alternative, she was contempt with what she had. Maybe it was because she was already in the higher ranks and she wanted to stay in the higher ranks, but she still had that feeling of "This is better." As well, the episode "Welcome Home" is supposed to connect us together, that we are all human beings, even if we don't agree with each other. The episode was meant to showcase how separated human beings and how far different our ideologies can stray from one another, but at the end of the day, we are more alike than we wish to admit. Paige, in the end, disagreed with Beck's philosophy, but consented he was still a human being who deserved to live and express himself. You know why comparing the United States to Fascism is laughable? How are you able to upload your video to KZbin? How are we able to have this Public conversation online? How are people able to literally protest every day of the year outside of the White House? Because the people have the freedom to do so. You know what Fascism is? Only being allowed to go on the internet certain times of the day, and the government regulating what sites you are allowed to go on. Fascism is the government regulating what you are allowed to say. Last I checked, the only time Donald Trump tried "Regulating" the internet was for less censorship, not more censorship. As someone who's family actually came from a Fascist country, and who still has friends in Fascist countries, I think a lot of people squander what they have in America and do not take advantage of what they have.

steelhound duncan Based on the analysis of history. take a closer look... The grid was created by Kevin Flynn to be a digital frontier. its inhabitants considered him a “god”. All programs and isos follow a tradition of obeying "god" and his commandments. They lived in a utopia. Until clu, an image and likeness of "god", broke the tradition and disobeyed god. He made a revolution and took possession of the grid. Then it clu “killed” its rightful owner Kevin Flynn (as it was seen in tron evolution). We can draw an analogy with the fall of the czar in the Russian revolution During the government of clu everything went worse, because clu’s goverment is a centralized with the monopoly of the force and security. he invaded the properties of peaceful programs and took them, and censored freedom of speech with justification for protecting them. Clu also persecute and killed almost all isos, in the opinion that they were a threat to national sovereignty. Does it remind you of something? No? ... maybe the genocide in Cambodia, the genocide in Ukraine or the fight between Lenin and Trotsky. He also created a cult of his personality, represented by the color red (the same color as socialism). Programs that follow him don’t believe and oposse to users (or gods) and even persecute them and their supporters. They are against religion (but they worship the personality of the dictator) and against the "gods". Do the same way that communists persecute religious. The clu government: -It is not a cult of tradition -A cult of harmful modernism -A cult of pseudo-intellectualism -A cult of pseudoscience -A strong census of progressivism - Pursuit of spirituality -Worship of the state - Centralized state - Property invasion (aggression) -Aversion to different opinions -Aversion to decentralization the same characteristics of socialist governments. Beck is against clu’s goverment. He is against a cultural revolution. Many times he said “Before clu things were better”, and he also said “the State is the enemy”( a libertarian or anarchocaptalist frase). Another interesting thing is that Beck didn’t destroy clu’s statue because clu was xenophobe or fascist. He destoyed it because tesler broke into his proprerty and because clu’s forces killed his friend, as Bodhi said “this is our field”.

"Care for the fellow man"? So tell me does this _fellow man_ has a skin colour? Or a gender? A political, economical or religious stand? Or a nationality? Does these things make you care more or less for this so called _fellow man_ ? And you dare to say I'm the racist for not supporting a movement that is clearly determined to polarize every situation based on the colour of the skin? How do you call that? The definition of racism surely comes to mind Don't play the fool cause I wrote my comment clearly for no one to confuse, I said there's no bad or good black/white people, there's bad and good people no matter the colour and justice should be for all (with all the good and bad things that implies), the fact that you dare to say that BLM is a good movement is falacy, what do you have to say about the unfair hate and violence promoted by this group towards inocent people? What do you call the hate and discrimination instigated towards some people just because they're white, or because they're cops or because they're wealthy? How do you call when you hate and prejudge someone just for the colour of their skin, their job or their wealth? I don't know you but that's not different from racism, you're putting the blame on innocent people, hating them and demanding for them to suffer or pay for something they have nothing to do... yes, tragedies happen and yes, sometimes there are culprits but these movement doesn't seem to stop there and it has become nothing but an excuse for those who seek hate and keep resentment thanks to what the media have thaught them to hate, just like they've done with you Talk about the innocent store owners and employees that have suffered from this madness, talk about the inoccent cops that have been harassed and hated, talk about those inoccent white and even black people who have been labeled as evil just for being rich (smells like socialism/comunism) think about how this is bad for them , and this is supposed to be the "Care for the fellow man"? THEY are fellow man too and that's what I said before, there's no black or white lives there are lives and all lives matter, we cannot be divided against each other by prejudice. This reminds me of a black woman who said something like "when you see some cops doing bad things it's not hard to assume everyone are like that" that's how BLM thinks and if we followed that reasoning as an excuse then someone could also argue "when you see some black people commiting crimes it's not hard to assume everyone are like that" so following your reasoning no one would be a racist and those called bad cops or racist people wouldn't be racist at all cause they would just be doing what you're doing which is discrimination and prejudice... think about someone else besides yourself before following a movement, consider that not everything is just as you see it, other people have different stands, try to understand as much as you can and make sure that either the problem and the solution make sense... USA needs to be aware of this, they need to identify the real problem and accept that maybe it cannot be entirely fixed and not everyone could always be happy but at least people must try... otherwise they will remain stuck like this forever in a repetitive cycle of non sense hating and discrimination from everyone towards everyone... heck I'm starting to think this is something part of USA culture more than a problem, they've been going in circles with this for so long that it makes it look like that

i totally agree with all the points made in this video. SPECIALLY the comment of how they treat their two black characters! i loved able and cutler, it was disappointing that they killed them off.. i love this franchise so much and tron uprising was criminally underrated, however, i do think that even if it wasnt meant to read this way, paiges story is very similar to how white people (specially kids) are radicalized by the alt right when theyre vulnerable. she lost her friends and home and was constantly manipulated by tesler into believing what is basically nazi propaganda just how now people are basically brainwashed by modern nazis even if its by meme formats and stupid tweets. i hope i make sense. i am not defending her actions, i just think that her story couldve been very interesting if the writers were meaning for it to be read that way

Being ANtifa makes you a true hero, wonder why so many in power irl are against them? It's liek they're the power hungry villains or something
