What a great idea. To put this in the UK would require a Private Finance Initiative, and a focus group to determine if anyone would use it, and, most importantly a feasibility study to see how much profit it could make. Then it would be built 15 years later for 5 times the estimated cost, and would charge a tenner per ride, unless it was a weekday and off-peak, or you had kids and a super duper saver ticket or a season ticket. Then, when no-one uses it because the pricing is too high and confusing, they’d blame its failure on the public for not getting out of their cars. The cynicism is strong in this one

I'm a part-time Politician in an English city where this is (apparently) being spoken about - but no one has mentioned it to me. It would be a boon in our hilly city - but, we would need five or six at least, if not more. I love cynicism and sarcasm - are they the same thing?????? Not really but near enough.

In north america this would require 5 years of environmental impact review and community consultation. Then upon opening it, a person would try to use it by holding onto it with their mouth and get hurt, sue the city, win 12 million dollars and get the whole thing shut down. There would then be a legal precedent that these are extreme liability risks and they'd be totally banned.

I live in the US and i cycle everywhere. Out here i feel like it's a hostile environment for cycles. Sidewalks are bumpy, covered in debris and plants encroach on them. This hill is way steeper than it looks. However, if your bike has low gears, it is actually easier to bike all the way up rather than using the lift. The lift is overrated since it is physically demanding to use. A tiny metall is pushing up you and your bike. This creates a lot of pressure in your foot - painful. Although the idea is cool, it is way easier to invest in a bike with low gears and just bike all the way up yourself.

A small metal thing comes out of a slot on the ground at the bottom of the hill. You have to keep your right foot on it to be pushed up the hill. If there's no weight on it after a couple of metres then it retreats onto the ground so you can't take your for off or try to join the lift part easy up the hill. It's very small and narrow so that it fits into the slot and this means it feels a bit peculiar k under your foot. Takes some practice
