In spring I wish I could be everywhere. But I have to choose target species, not to loose my head. And this year I want to focus on woodpeckers. I have spend many hours in the forest looking for the white backed woodpecker. This bird is endangered, because down building of old forest.
I was so lucky to find a pair of woodpeckers nesting in a beautiful old forest. It proves that hard work pays of. Time to do bird photography in the spring forest, together with the nikon z9 and nikon 600mm f4 TC.

It is so exciting to search for a bird you have never photographed and then find it and get the quality of photographs you did, Trond. For example, I have never photographed the little brown creeper you did so well in this video. Not that I haven't seen it and watched it in the trees, but I have never had a camera with me when I did. That will be a trophy bird for me when I get one. It was the same for the yellow bellied sap sucker. I tried for years to get a photograph of one. Then one spring it all came together and I got several quality photographs of three or four of them. It is like a triumph when that happens. That's what keeps me following your channel, Trond. You recognize the excitement of these once in a lifetime "firsts" and bring them to us in such a real-life manner.

It's funny that you feel that way about the places in Ireland. I often see photos of foggy forests or rugged moors and think it's a shame there's nothing like that here. But then I remind myself that people come from all over the world to visit Zion National Park, which is only a short drive from where I live.

Hey Trond, thanks for sharing this story about the woodpeckers with us. It's nice to see that you were able to get some great shots and photos. I've also resolved to get some shots and pictures of the great spotted and black woodpecker this year.... it's a bit difficult to get a good shot of the black woodpecker because it looks like they change their main territory quite often.... but I'll keep at it and hope to capture some great moments. Best regards ✌

Hi, I watched that you had previously used the 500mm F4E FL & also the Z400mm F4.5. I just need your opinion. I own the Z8 & 400mm F4.5. But I have a chance to switch my 400mm F4.5 for the 500mm F4E FL + FTZ for around USD 1640. I just want a bit more reach and better background separation. I mainly photograph bigcats (tigers mainly) here in India, dense forest, low light, deep bushes. Considering weight is not a factor. Should I do it ? Will it be worth it. Thank You and your photos with the 500mm F4 looked brilliant and Autofocus worked great even with the FTZ
@trondwestby
@trondwestby 8 ай бұрын
Hi! I would go for the 500 FL with FTZ. This is a great lense and can also handle 1.4 teleconverter. 400mm is a bit short for me :)

Z6 II is not good for wildlife when it comes to autofocus. Unfortunally you have to buy Z8 or Z9 to get that performance :(
