As you've lived in Scotland for over 30 years, I'll respond in English. George V was advised to renounce all his German honours, including his family name, for himself and his extended family in a climate of increasing criticism of his German connections amongst sections of the British public. It was genuinely feared the monarchy was endangered. The tragedy for Germany was the early death of Kaiser Frederick

From 1714 to the accession of Queen victoria in 1837, the kings of Great Britain were also Electors of Hanover and throughout the 18th century German troops were hired by the British Crown. Wellington was saved at Waterloo by the arrival of General Blucher and his Prussians. Both Queen Victoria and Edward VII spoke German - A rekindling of Anglo-German accord is to be welcomed - we could do with their drive and energy.

Both Wellington and Blucher were the 'key' to success. Blucher was defeated and had Napoleon chased him, then he would have faced a total rout. Wellington's army was a multi-lingual and multi-national army which was no where near the calibre of the army he commanded in Spain,Portugal and Southern France. There was no 'saving' other than a mutual action to defeat Napoleon.

They play Semper Fidelis, Anchors Aweigh, and then the Marine's Hymn. They often they play a march associated with the regiment trooping its colour at this stage (last year they played The Glasgewian), but they've played Hands Across the Sea before.

Its common for the bands to play foreign marches. On the BBC coverage they said it was requested by Major-General Norton in recognition of the ties between the US and UK militaries. A few years ago the German march "mollendorfer" was played, and "prussian glory" gets played each year.

Interesting marching music, including Anchors Aweigh and The Marine's Hymn. I guess we play British Marches here as well in the USA. I need to go over there and see this some day. British military bands will also play music from France, Italy, Hungary, Russia, Czech - o Slovakia (apologies!), Poland and even Germany - or indeed, anywhere else they choose. And, yes, US music too, as well as British. There is nothing unusual in the fact that the selection played here by the Massed bands of the Guards included three US tunes.

The German people have a glorius past, Adolf Hitler aside. You can't change history. My mother who was English was bombed by the Germans during World War II but she always respected the Germans as did my American father who fought them at Normandy and the Battle of the buldge. I don't blame the current German generation for the sins of Hitler. I would like to think that former foes are all marching together now in death and peace as that great generation are almost all gone now.My parents are.

Good Ol' Lizzie's toes a' tapping! Excellent. And Camilla's hands are keeping time. Love it when the Coldstream and Grenadiers go head to head. But this English/German nonsense! We're descended from Anglo-Saxons which makes us more Danish than German .... thank you to KGL at Waterloo, but we're definitely more Danish than Prussian! That appeals to me. We left "Germany" so we could enjoy a Dark Ages tea break rather than all that Tuetonic raging and "efficiency". Nobody likes a clever bugger.

I'm rather perplexed that you should use the term 'saved' when the plan from the get go was to defeat Napoleon together. Indeed, Blucher was badly defeated at Ligny and only just managed to escape to circle 'round and HELP Wellington deliver the coup de grâce.

The sad thing is, you have no pride in who you are, however, I am very proud to be German, I refuse to ignore our 2000+ year of history based on Hitler. As a matter of fact, every major country has a dark chapter in it's history and we Germans are the only nation who have admitted it, paid for it and apologized, so stand the fuck up and be proud!!!

Had he not got his arse kicked at Ligny, the campaign may not have had to rest on Wellington's army desperately holding the ridge at Waterloo. Indeed, the entire campaign was subsidized and armed by the British Government. Indeed, in all likelihood, had Britain not been around or neglected to involve itself in the matters of European states who were incapable of maintaining the balance of power themselves - France may well have maintained European hegemony for a lot longer.
