Part 4 - Escort to the Queen's Colour of the Scots Guards
360 years of Trooping the Colour - Queen Elizabeth II's Birthday Parade 2011
BBC
The music is provided by the Massed Bands of the Foot Guards and the Mounted Bands of the Household Cavalry, together with a Corps of Drums and occasionally pipers, totaling approximately 400 musicians.
To the strains of "The Grenadiers' Slow March", the Escort To the Colour then troops the colour down the long line of Nos 6-2 Guards. The colour itself is borne by the Ensign in front of the line of Guards, but the ranks of the Escort interweave with their ranks. For Nos 6-2 Guards, who maintain the 'present arms' position, the long trooping, especially on a hot day, requires stamina.
Eventually the Escort arrives back at its original position as no. 1 Guard - from where it first marched off in quick time. Their Captain, who had temporarily ceded his command to the Subaltern, resumes his command over No. 1 Guard by ordering them to present arms, thus bringing the Escort back in line with Nos 2-6 Guards. The entire parade is now ordered by the Field Officer to slope arms, thus concluding the Trooping phase.
The Trooping phase is followed by the March Past in Slow and Quick Time of the Foot Guards and then the Household Cavalry with King's Troop, also in slow and quick time.

doggo well, we’ve been doing it longer than most... I have to say that i’ve seen sharper performances in previous years. (Let me add straight away...I couldn’t do it...I struggled to keep step in remembrance day parades....the band were always a couple of hundred yards in front, so you saw the front of the column set off before the sound of the drum beat reached us...confused my little brain)

The Poms do this stuff better than any other country. The whole country is a history lesson. 3 million tourists each year come to the UK to watch this. Commonwealth countries all do this to various degree. The same movements, music, formations, rank system...everything. What is also worth remembering is that these are all regular combat soldiers. In the Guards who went to Afghanistan, the bass drum player had a leg blown off. Within a year he was back there in the band. You would never know.

Speaking as an American Civil War reenactor, keeping alignment, pace, maintenance of frontage and military bearing IS 'a bit of a miracle' at any time. It takes a Hell of a lot of practice even for troops of the obvious quality of Guards to get it right. My respects to all involved.

My father served in the Scots Guards back in the late ‘50s and did the Trooping twice, he said most of the men would rather do a tour in the jungles of Malaysia than ceremonial duty, they said the jungle was easier.

Fpr the benefit of those who have never walked across this parade ground - it slopes in two directions, the lower corner near the end of Downing Street becomes a mini lake in heavy rain, the surface (bar the central road which goes through the arches), is sandy, therefore, not solid. Up and down, up and down you go - not quite like a beach, but nothing like Red Square or anything like that. How they manage to retain their formation as well as they do is totally amazing - though the occasional ankle goes over - I gather it's all about counting, countng, counting.

Herman Greenfield Hahaha you can’t compare the mass band of the British army to any other. No country has anywhere near the quality when it comes to bands. There is a reason the grenadier Guards band is flown all over the world to perform at the cost of millions because they are the best. This year the grenadiers are organising the trooping so it’s going to be extra special.

To the foreign viewers there are 5 regiments of Foot Guards the unforms all look incredibly similar? Well yes, but you can tell them apart by the button arrangements on the tunic and the decorations on bearskins. Coldstream Guards - buttons in groups of two - red hackle on right hand side Grenadier Guards - single buttons spaced - white hackle on left hand side Scots Guards - buttons grouped in three - no decoration at all Irish Guards - buttons grouped in four - blue hackle on the right hand side Welsh Guards - buttons grouped in five - white and green hackle on the left hand side Hope this helps.

If it were not for the the British Empire, Canada would have been nothing more than a giant trading outpost for natural resources. Instead it is home to some of the greatest centers of learning, first among them McGill and Queen's College, a world famous police force and judiciary, public servants of the highest probity, clean and light handed government. That is the legacy of Great Britain on the Canadian Commonwealth. God Protect Canada. God Save the Queen!!

If disillusioned British people wonder what their culture is, THIS is your culture, be proud of it. Like the Pacific islands and NZ Haka, or the Ghurka Khukri dance, this is the British war dance. Order, bright colours, pomp, ceremony, massed bands. Its a wonderful thing.
