Foot Guards Massed Bands rehearsal for Trooping the Colour - 13 May 2015

The Massed Bands of the Foot Guards (including the Corps of Drums of The Welsh and Grenadier Guards) are put through their paces at Wellington Barracks, London by the Garrison Sergeant Major, Billy Mott, in a rehearsal for Trooping The Colour.

Thanks for uploading. Nice to see the Band Rehearsal being done in blues, not the usual working dress. Corps of Drums looked sharper this year as well. Good luck to all on the day.

John Butler It's called 'Cannatex' by Sir Vivian Dunn. The title is an abbreviation for the Canadian National Exhibition at which the Guards bands played on many occasions.

Kenneth Mortimer +Ah, good old Sir Vivian Dunn, bandmaster of HM Royal Marines' Band at Eastney, Portsmouth for many years in the past. Taking nothing away from this video but the RM band could play anything and do it well with precision marching. They were renowned for their precision displays, I remember them well.

Caitlin1928 You have to look fairly closely to see that they have small flutes and are part of The Corps of Drums.

I believe the back few ranks are the Corps of Drums (Grenadier and Welsh contingents) and they play a few fife marches when taking post occurs eg: during the right form before the march past and when the band has to move to the right of horse guards to allow for the mounted band to take the centre. Other than that, they're there for a very British reason... Tradition

can anyone explain what 'by the centre' means? How is it different from 'by the right, quick march etc?

+Stephen Hill It's to indicate from whom to take your dressing - ie. you keep in line with the guy in the middle, rather than the left or right. (Normally formations take their dressing from the right marker, so will dress by the right or by the left, but "by the centre" is used for ceremonials and especially by bands.)
