The thing about RDJ in this movie is that he's not playing black face. He's acting in a movie playing an Australian method actor, who does black face in a movie in the movie. This was meta before people knew what that meant. Also, may be the last great 'outrageous' comedy.

DUDE! HAHAHAHAHA! THAT BLONDE GIRL ON THE LEFT AT 10:47! I don't know how I never noticed that before with how many times I've seen this movie, but that's one of the funniest faces I've ever seen a person make. On another note, I'm about to head to Indochina and now I'm going to be nervous about old French landmines.

Nobody was mad at this movie back in the day. Everyone understood they were making fun of blackface and method acting, not actually doing it. Robert Downey Jr was Nominated for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for this role, but that was the year of Heath Ledger's Joker in The Dark Knight. NOTHING was going to beat that.

Some people get 'professionally' mad at stuff like this just so they can boost their credentials as Gatekeepers. I have not seen any black reactors yet who did not laugh their asses off at RDJ's performance here. And the whole point of this movie was to highlight the ridiculousness of the business and actors playing these sorts of roles as Oscar bait. Good reaction, always glad to the "Tom Cruise?!?" ending. 😊

Well I don't know about anyone else but I can't be racist. As a straight white guy I now self identify as a gay transgender woman of color. I support and stand in solidarity with those who acknowledge my recent improvement on the dance floor. Edit: Although on the weekends I identify as “transparent”! If anyone claims they can see me, they’re lying!

I love how you were confused at the beginning with the fake commercial and trailers. Imagine how confused I was in 2008 seeing this in theaters! 😂

Actually, Booty Sweat and Bust a Nut bars were on sale at the concession stands when this movie came out.

Cruise said he would do the role, but he wanted fat hands and he wanted to dance. He basically created the character. He told Stiller that the movie should have the studio executive aspect.

Nah man! Lots of people didn't know that was Tom at first. And no. It was not hated immediately it took a few years before the "professional" offended people took notice. Just imagine you went to theaters and seen it. Watching the real trailers then the fake trailers started! I was like "uh what the hell?" Bust a Nutt bars...Booty sweat..lol! Once everyone in the theater understood the fake, everyone was cracking up!

RDJ was brilliant in this. The fake trailers looked even more hilarious on the big screen. I couldn't wait to buy the DVD - this has been the only movie I've ever watched with the commentary on, and it was worth it! 😂😂😂😂😂

Robert Downey Junior is a method actor. Playing a method actor. He did the blackface against his own best interests. But it was the role, dammit!
@michaelschroeck2254Ай бұрын
It’s not even blackface. Blackface was a theater gimmick at the turn of the last century . And yes even black performers did “ blackface.” Look it up

Yeah, nobody was mad at this. In fact, people were SO not mad, that Downey Jr. received an OSCAR NOMINATION for the movie. And as we learn in Tropic Thunder, those are hard to get, it's super political, you need to take out ads, etc. I do think some people tried to "cancel" this movie like...5 or 6 years ago, as a form of perverse virtue signalling, but it didn't really work because...it's a great movie, and everyone can tell that there is a narrative purpose to the color of RDJ's skin (and it's NOT to make fun of black people). Same with the Simple Jack stuff. It's satire. And it's funny as hell (possibly the best comedy of the 21st century). It's a real shame we don't get movies like this anymore...apparently, studios were too sold on the "Scorcher" model of profitability, making endless sequels and prequels, and eventually drumming up entire freakin' cinematic universes, instead of taking a risk on new, original content that doesn't have an in-built audience (you know, like essentially ALL movies, pre-2000...sure you had a few franchises in there, but most films were their own thing, and if they were popular and/or critically-acclaimed...95% of them still didn't get sequels).
