I've never seen such a powerful system like Fiona hit right there.... I hope those people are going to be OK. It's a serious event that needed to be planned for so I hope they did.... Let's also not forget how amazing it is that we are able to get a halfway decent idea of where these storm systems are going to be in a week. you can never blame the weather folks for anything bad that happens because you have ample time to prepare and even though it's not clear exactly where the storm is going to go, we've got a pretty darn good idea and you need to keep your eyes and ears open

Florida girl here. Hurricanes are by definition storms of the tropics. How on earth to we get a Cat 3 hitting Nova Scotia? Where do they send their boats to keep those safe? That is their livelihood. How do we get the people safe - those are their lives! They are trained from birth to handle different kinds of weather dangers - hurricanes should not need to be one of them! Praying for all of those in the path of Fiona while she does some pretty crazy stuff. However, fair play: looks like Florida is going to take a hit. I only pray that those that saw Matthew a few years ago don't get another direct hit: they are very much still recovering. Rebuilding a town from the ground up takes time.

Just how exactly does a storms forward movement speed somehow increase the overall windspeed? Never heard of that before from any meteorologist I wouldn't think that just because a storm is moving at 40+mph, that you take sustained winds of 125+ and just add on another 40mph..
@kathleenirish2 жыл бұрын
Yes, forward speed added to wind speed matters. A fast moving storm can be higher cat than winds in storm indicate. Hurricane of 38 was cat 3 but forward speed added in made it devastating cat 5
