Today we track Tropical Storm Francine in the Gulf of Mexico. Formerly PTC 6, Francine is quickly developing today, sporting the dreaded half-shrimp look with a picture-perfect cirrus canopy of outflow. Francine is forecast to quickly or rapidly intensify over the next 24-36 hours over the very warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico, as it moves north then northeastward. The storm is likely to peak as a Category Two or Three hurricane off the coast of Louisiana before hopefully leveling off or weakening a bit before landfall.
A Hurricane Watch is up from Cameron to Grand Isle LA. A hard strike is expected, with 5-10 feet of storm surge, hurricane force winds, and heavy rain. Wide-reaching rainfall, wind, and tornado threats will extend well east of the center, perhaps all the way into Western Florida. Folks across the Gulf Coast should be preparing for Francine, with the landfall expected Wednesday night.
