In today's video, we're looking at the amazing Cephalotus. We'll be discussing all of its care needs, and then I'll be REPOTTING AND DIVIDING a Cephalotus.

1:26 i remember this other guy on KZbin use the flower to indicate when it needs to be watered again because it will droop and then perk back up after being watered

That's an interesting method! Although as these are bog plants that grow in constantly moist environments, I wouldn't have thought that waiting till the blooms wilt would be an ideal practice to follow. I imagine that would stress them unnecessarily. Just my opinion of course.

Yeah they're a stunning plant - so unusual. Mine was set back a little after the re-pot but is growing strongly again now and the divisions are doing well. If you live in the UK they are readily available if you know where to look. I can point you in the right direction if you like.

@@Grow_Up_Man55 I just had to come back and re-watch your video, and, also, to give an update- I suggested to my local nursery and they have made an import, so I'm getting my first Cephalotus in a few days. From what I saw online, when placing the order, it'll be a large clump of juvenile plants, not large, mature pitchers, but I'm keeping a positive outlook.

Haven't any Cephalotus but I may get one later. If you want any ideas on plants you may want to have a look at LogeesPlants channel on KZbin. They are a commercial plant nursery in Connecticut that specialise in rare, fruiting and tropical plants. They have some interesting plant and have posted a video tour of one of their greenhouses.

just a tip. use wet soil when you plant them up because when you water it the soil level will go down

Thanks for the tip - but wouldn't you expect saturated soil to expand rather than contract?

Tropical Plants at 53 Degrees no because when you add water the soil will compact over time so it is better to add wet soil as it is already compact meaning you won’t have the soil level drop as drastically

These pitchers are enormous! I have just bought a "mature" plant from a well-known seller in the UK where the pitchers are "tiny" compared to these. Can I ask where you obtained your "monster" from?

It's all in the culture you know! Haha! 🤣 Actually I think they were pretty big when I bought it and it does seem to like my conditions. I couldn't swear by it as I've had a good few years, but I think I bought it from Hants Fly Traps. (Just checked my emails - bought from Hants Fly Traps in December 2017.)

@@Grow_Up_Man55 That's the same nursery where I obtained my Cephalotus. Mine was described as a "mature" sized plant and they have 4 large pitchers and 12 smaller ones but none are approaching the size of your monsters! At present, I have it on a sunny windowsill sitting on wet capillary matting and I will be very pleased if any of the new pitchers produced are half the size of yours.

@@alantaylor2756 I guess it takes time. I've found other carnivorous plants are also frustratingly slow growers. Nepenthes take forever to grow to a sizable plants and my drosera have also taken several years from being tiny things. I grew Drosera regia recently from seed, and already I'm frustrated at the fact I still need a magnifying glass to see them!

I haven’t tried it but wouldn’t think so. I’m not aware of any plant where you can do that. Only one way to find out though.

Yes I understand they need 8 weeks in a fridge before sowing - although I haven't yet tried this for myself. Good luck!

I haven't tried it but I would expect it would do just as well providing it doesn't have extra fertiliser added.

It's been about a year now. How did it go? I wanna know! Edit: I had a Cepohalotus several years ago that I grew for a while. It was beautiful and I loved it. I've tried to get another one, but they're very difficult to come by in Mexico.

Do you think Cephalotus can grow in a hollowed out peice of pumice in a Vivarium? I will use the same sphagnum moss, vermiculite, and the bottom will have only distilled water. I will not let roots soaking wet.

Yeah I'm sure it will. Just don't be in a hurry to refill the bottom - let it have a breather every so often by letting the reservoir go dry for a day or two. That's always worked well for mine and so far no root rot. Good luck!

They're fairly reasonable to buy in the UK - depends where you live.

Yes definitely. I'd do a mix of 2 parts sand 1 part peat.

That’s so bizarre seeing as they’re endemic to Australia. If they’re not available commercially then I guess your best option are private sellers. Try eBay, Etsy or carnivorous plant groups on Facebook.

Nice video, they are wonderful plants indeed, they are not as picky as people make out! and you're plant looks fantastic. I have some advice off my experiences if you're interested! not trying to critique or anything so I hope it doesn't come off that way! When the plant is so full like yours I wash the soil off the roots so I can see them clearly and cut the rhyzomes to seperate, this german youtuber does it really well in his video kzbin.info/www/bejne/l3ywnGeompx-oZI I'm not sure what you did for pullings before but any leaf taken that has the white rhyzome on the tip should grow roots no problem, I heard you said you didn't have the most success with trying pullings before?, for most including myself a clear container in a bright position with live sphagnum inside is a really good method I sometimes get 100% success with that method, I place the leaves against the sides of the container so I can actually see when some nice roots form so I know when I can pot them up :)

Thanks Keiran. I'm always happy to listen to other people's experiences - I'm certainly not the font of all knowledge on this stuff. I tried your link but alas, I don't speak German so it's lost on me. I've actually never tried to take leaf pullings - something to try in the future. And thanks for the tips - I'll bear them in mind when I do eventually get around to giving it a go. The divisions I took are doing OK now after a short period of 'sulking'. And yes, washing off the roots would have helped. I used to have a sink in the greenhouse for that very purpose but I removed it to make way for more plants!🤷🏻‍♂️
