Tropics Update: PTC 9 forms in the Gulf of Mexico, expected to become major Hurricane Helene

Potential Tropical Cyclone 9 is currently located in an ideal environment for rapid intensification and is forecast to become a major hurricane (at least a Category 3) before approaching the Big Bend area of Florida later this week. Once the system forms into a tropical storm, it would get the name "Helene." The National Hurricane Center believes that this storm will make landfall on Thursday.

Gonna be a big storm about Cross City. The whole West Coast of FLA gonna get wet again. No where for that water to go. It's been raining here every day for two months Now would be a great time to look at land for sale. If it's wet you may want to re think it.

Umm..I was a senior in high school during Ivan. We were out of school for a month, out of power for 2-3 weeks. The president was here talking to families, and people in surge areas lost everything. My high school yearbook had an entire section dedicated to that hurricane. It was a very slow hurricane which was why it caused so much damage. If you didn’t live through it and literally witness the damage first hand then maybe you should talk to some people who did. I came to find the comment about Ivan because I cannot understand how you wouldn’t classify that as major. Everyone in Pensacola remembers that storm and everyone had damage. The entire city was blue tarped for years in some cases. Pensacola isn’t Alabama. Yes, Ivan made landfall in Florida. I literally experienced it. Did you? From the internet..you know that thing you have access to. Hurricane Ivan was a large, long-lived, Cape Verde hurricane that caused widespread damage in the Caribbean and United States. The cyclone was the ninth named storm, the sixth hurricane and the fourth major hurricane of the active 2004 Atlantic hurricane season. Ivan formed in early September, and reached Category 5 strength on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale (SSHS). Ivan caused catastrophic damage in Grenada as a strong Category 3 storm, heavy damage in Jamaica as a strong Category 4 storm, and then severe damage in Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands, and the western tip of Cuba as a Category 5 hurricane. The graphic clearly states major hurricane landfalls in Florida. A major hurricane is category 3 or stronger. Ivan as a category 3 did not make landfall in Florida. Yes, it brought impacts to Florida but did not landfall there that is why it is not included in the list.
